Do y'all see this as staying an apple-only feature for the near-term, or do you think we'll see other phones with this resolution (or similar) emerging later this year?

Absolutely. The screen on the iPhone is only $28. It's just a matter of time before other manufacturers pick up a similar if not higher resolution display.

As with all technology, it's just a matter of time. As far as when, that depends on how you define near-term. A phone with that type of screen will likely be announced a few months ahead of when it is actually released.

That resolution is one thing I loved about the iphone 4. I am on the captivate right now, and when a website is zoomed out, it looks like shit in comparision.

Yeah, I've had a chance to do a side-by-side of the Incredible and the iphone 4, and the resolution on the latter is really really nice.

That said, it's not enough to make me go Apple; I'm deadset on Android, just haven't decided on phone, carrier, or when :p

wow thats it?
someone i know cracked his screen and it was 200$ to replace

You may see higher rez screens than what is currently used, but I don't think you'll see 960x640. 3:2 is a lame aspect ratio for something that pretends to be a media device. I'll take a lower DPI 16:9 screen instead.

I get that the retina display is high dpi, but who actually reads websites fully zoomed out?

No one, but you don't have to zoom in as much and hence can see more of the screen. Especially nice for webpages not formated for mobile use.

Yeah, it really is an impressive display. I'd really like to see a larger 1280x720 Super AMOLED PMP with a pixel pitch equal to the Retina display's, though.

It's good for web browsing, however. The iPad is awkwardly 4:3 for the same reason. I have a Zune HD, which is 16:9, and browsing the web on it is kind of a pain in the ass because of the aspect ratio.

Being able to decipher text before you zoom into it is advantageous. The touch precision on the new iPhone is also quite good, so you can click very small links with a very high amount of precision. Works out very well, actually.

I'm hoping for the next next generation android and win 7 phones next spring to support 1280x800 or 1280x768 or 1280x720.

Pretty much everything phide said... except I wasn't aware of the Retina display he mentions.

I figure I've been waiting this long for a real phone I might as well wait a bit longer and spend the $500 on something I'll be really happy with :p

Idk how legit this is, but it would be very impressive. I see nothing but stuff increasing... I mean, Motorola wants a 2ghz phone by the end of the year so who knows... It diffidently won't stop at the i4's resolution.
