Ok I'm upgrading from an x1900xt and my two choices are either an eVGA 8800GT 512mb from ZZF for $218 shipped or a PNY 9600GT 512mb from Microcenter for $158 shipped. Is the 8800GT worth the extra $50 upfront? (keep in mind it's only $20 more after rebate) The games I'm going to be playing are CS:S, TF2, COD4, UT3, and maybe SupCom.

Here's what it's going to be going into: 3.5 ghz e2180, P35 DS3L, 2Gb Ballistix, Corsair VX450W, on Vista.

monitor resolution used for gaming and case ventilation are two important factors

you are going to be able to push much higher framerates with an 8800gt in most situations. just because the 9000 series is a higher number than the 8000 doesn't me the card is always better. check out toms hardware for some VGA charts

1680 by 1050 for most games. I'm playing COD4 at 1440 by 900 right now tho cause it's a little laggy at 1680.

Both cards should be able to run your games very well, at that resolution. The 9600 GT is the best bang for your buck right now and the 64 Stream Processors are more than enough, but as games get even more shader intensive, the extra 48 SPs in the 8800 GT, will be useful in time. I recommend you get the 8800 GT.

Hi People
If I can give my opinion wether to go for the 8800 GT or the 9600 GT.
I was all for the 8800 until I reseacherd a bit deeper and I have decided now for the 9600 one. The reason being is the big difference in power consumption but only a small difference in the performance.
The 9600 GT one is a monster: idle 31°C / load 48°C
The gainward 8800 GT withe same cooler: 60°C on load....

(big thank you to my friend pvhk who has both cards)

Even neddless to buy a third part cooler!

I bought one last week... I run COD4 at 1680x1050 full setthing (every very thing maxed)
no lag at all.

Crysis medium everywhere 2xaa no lag...

so yeah... I really like the card it makes NO NOISE at all...

My score is well near 14100, with my settings in sig, with my setup. Then again, I have a quad core.

That's if you care about benchmarks anyway.

8800GT gets my vote, just depends which one.

more stream processors, and highers texture fill rate.. Grabbed right off nvidia.com

Then produced this crappy print-screen with MSpaint, and excel..

But, I'd go 8800gt.

You wouldn't step up from a 7950Gtx to a 8600Gt would you? TO ME, it'd be like doing the same thing.

Big difference there though. The 8600 GT was barely better than the 7600 GT, much less the 7900 GTX. On the other hand, the 9600 GT is around twice as fast as the 8600 GT, nearly on par with the 8800 GT. That said, with prices so close, I'd go with the 8800 GT too, for when future games use the shader power more.
