I currently have a stock 9500 Pro video card in my computer, which plays everything very good. I've been happy with it. But my friend Matt has a 9700 Pro for sale and was wondering if i wanted to buy it. I'm not sure what to do, because i've been happy with the 9500 pro. I think he is willing to tell the video card to me for like $45-55 so, i just really want to know, will ig et any major performance gain from the 9700 Pro?

For $50 I think you'll see quite a bit of improvement. Besides, at that price, if you weren't happy, I'd bet you could make your money back reselling it. Would this friend be willing to let you try it before giving him the money? That would be the safest bet.

9500 pro and 9700 pro are based on the same cores I believe...Not really worth it...Probably could sell your card(save ya 50 dollars) and buy a 6600gt or something. I have a 9500 pro also.

Yeah, my friend said he's willing to let me borrow the card to see how i like it, then on Monday let him know if i want to buy it or not. I've been thiking about it...still undecided.

They are both based on the R300 Core, but the 9500Pro has a 128Bit Memory interface as opposed to the 9700's 256bit, thus cutting its bandwidth in half. I'd say with little to no "eye candy" on you wouldn't see much of a difference, but with it on, you would see a big improvement. Besides, for $50, its a steal!

Check your PM.

I don't think you could do better for 50 bucks. It's always a slipperly slope. Spend just a little more and get the next best thing.....
But if I were you, I'd do it. Sell your 9500 and it's practically a free upgrade. Free is better than paying at least 100 out of pocket to get the 6600GT.

That's cheap! I paid $100 for my latest 9700 Pro. Looking to buy a 9500 Pro right now. What's the max you guys would pay for a 9500 Pro?

I think that's a good buy.

You can try clocking 9700Pro to 9800Pro clocks, and you will get quite a boost.

What part of california you in...I might sell my 9500 pro...

1. Buy the 9700 Pro

2. Overclock your 9500 Pro for free

3. Sell the 9700 Pro for a profit

4. Save the extra cash toward a current-gen vcard

With X800's under $300 and 6800's rapidly approaching $200, it's well worth the time and effort to save your pennies.

I'd take it. It'll just be a drop-in upgrade - no funny driver stuff to work with.

w00t i got to borrow the video card for the weekend, and do my testing on it to see if it improves anything.

I got a few questions tho...

9700 Pro requires the power cable like the 9500 Pro, but i thought it was always the mini molex 3 pinned floppy drive power cable. The 9700 Pro, has the molex connect for 4 pins, such as your hard drive. I was like...hmmmm same card? wtf? So if someone can tell me what that means id appreciate it.

Also, I was talking to Matt, my friend selling the 9700 pro to me said, give him what i feel for it, hes like $25-30 bucks will do... When he said that my mouth about hit the floor. LoL.
Thanks for the help so far guys, if anyone can add a little bit more about the molex connectors, i would appreciate it. Thanks.

The molex & the floppy connector are the same elecrically, they just have different physical connections - no big deal here.

my 9500 Pro..if it is a older one ( before they fucked them up)overclocked like a MOFO!!!..they are AWESOME cards..and can easly be flashed to a 9700 pro..with stock cooling since they practicly are!!...ill tell yea..look into overclocking if you dont know...find a good BIOS for the card that is a 9700 Pro and flash the card using a utility and youll save alot of money..and mabey get a new cooler for the card from the money you saved and then opverclock higher!

my 2 cents

but if you are looking for a new card and maybe putting this card in anouther computer and using the 9700 for yourself...then 25 is a awesome price

Okey w8 a minute, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't only 9500Non-pro modable to 9700Pro? I've newer heard of flashing a 9500Pro to 9700Pro...

9500p is the same thing as a 9700p except with lower clocks right ? So if you have a 9500p that overclocks really well, flashing it to 9700p just makes the higher clocks there on default, if it's possible to do so, I don't know if they flash.

I sold my 128mb ti4200 last summer for 50 dollars shipped. 9500p is a better card, but then again there is a whole new gen of cards out now that hadn't shipped last summer. So I think a used 9500p is probably worth 40-50 bucks to the right person.

No, 95Pro can't be modded.
There's another thread on this topic within the last week, I just can't remember where.

the early 9500np had 4 pipes disabled but there were still on the card. I don't see what advantage you'd get to softmodding a 9500p to a 9700p.

wow i got one for you guys...

I got the card, got home, installed it. Didn't do anything to the drivers because, 5.1 Cats for an ATI card are same for an ATI card, am i right? so, i lef tthe drivers on. Tried to play CS: Source and.....i was getting about 30 FPS lower with the 9700 Pro, then the 9500 Pro...i was like huh??!?!?!! so...im, goona put in my 9500 pro again and see whats up, maybe i was miss reading my fps, but i swear to god they were lower.

You should uninstall and reinstall the drivers always. The fact the cards are so close it didnt throw out a ton of errors but not surprised it's not running optimally. Probably could reinstall on top rather than swap cards at this point though. Whats the point of swapping back and forth when you know its not set up right. The info you have gotten is good... i.e. 256 bit vrs. 128 bit memory interface giving you double the memory bandwidth per MHz and they have the same R300 core so.... your testing is proving you've goofed. The 9700 is better simple.

The 9700 Pro i got isnt 256 bit tho, its only 128 bit, 128 MB.

That 9500 Pro ran Source like a charm, othe games like NFSU2 ran with some lag.
The 9700 Pro runs Source laggy at times, other games like NFSU2 beautifully...no idea what to do at this point in time :(

No such thing as a 128-bit 97Pro. There is a 128-bit 98, but this is usually called "EZ Edition" or something similar, except for Sapphire's Atlantis Edition.

yeah no such card...try loading ATI tool and get the info about the 97pro and then take a screenshot of it...

Sapphire's Atlantis Edition.

I've seen this before on the board when referring to the 128bit cards but I don't believe it's right. I bought a 256 bit 128 mb 9800pro from newegg and the box says Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9800 Pro. They made cheapy 9800 pros with 128 bit memory buses which suck, but there is no official model designation for it. Rather, I think the Sapphire marketing dept decided to start calling all their 9800 cards Atlantis around the same time they made the 128bit cards. Any 9800pro card bought from Sapphire in the last year or so is called Atlantis,
Sort of like the way Visiontek nvidia cards were all named Xtasy.

Here's a picture of the box mine came in. Notice it says Atlantis, even though the specs say 256 bit bus.

Here's a card who's actual model name is called 9800 Atlantis. It appears to be a regular 9800np.

And finally here is the 128 bit crap 9800 but it has the same box and model name as the full 256 bit version above.

Meh, you're probably right. I just don't have the attention span or memory to keep track of details like that. Atlantis, Asylum, whatever, it's all the same to me- what I remember is Radeon so-and-so vs. GeForce so-and-so.

Like i said before...load up ATItool and look at the stats of your card..and then take a screenshot of it..so we can help you identify your card...

There's a difference, but it's pretty minor. I've upgraded from a 9500 pro to my current 9700 pro. It's well worth the 50.00 upgrade though. You can always sell the 9500 pro to me for 50.00, and the upgrade would be free ;).

The 9700 is in a different class than the 9500's. For $30 you would be a moron not to take it.

I easily hit 22k 3dmark01 and almost 7k 3dmark03 with a pentium 2.4c based system back in the day. 425mhz core, which some 9500's can match, but 375mhz memory, which simply none of them can. Unless you have a cascade and lots of soldering skills. And even then, 9700 pro memory would be up around 405-410mhz.

My current 9700 pro (AIW) plays CS Source all day long 1600x1200 everything maxed. Never slows down on a secondary 3.2ghz system with 1GB generic memory.

yes..it is worth the extra money..!!!

the 9700pro should be at least 50% faster.....check tomshardware vga charts...

For $50? Get the 9700Pro.

yeha..ur paying 50 bucks for 10-20 fps gain..while I paid for my ultra instead of a 6800gt 100 extra bucks for 5-10 fps gain :)

Tell ya, what. If you're not interested, tell your friend I am. In fact, if you want to sell your 9500Pro for that price, let me know also.

Hmmm....I think i might get it, but im not gonna throw it in my rig. 22k in 3DMark2001? Are you serious? I ran it and only got a 16900ish. The 9500 Pro got a 13300ish.

Last night i put the 9500 Pro back in and it ran CS Source fine.

In a way its ironic because...Source runs grat on this 9500 pro, but every other game like NFSU2, BFVietnam, has its lag points. The 9700 Pro runs everyhting fine, except source which is my main game.

I came to the conclusion that, my friend tried over clocking his 9700 Pro, and he told me before that he had some issues with it and had to revert back. So....all i can think is that something messed up, overheated or something happened with this card because its not running to what you all should be saying it should be. I wish i could show you all so you can see that its not. My system Specs are below if anyone sees an issue that im over looking.
