would you rather have a geforce 9400 gt 1gb ddr2? or a 9500 gt 512mb ddr2?
 
For what purpose?

HTPC?
Gaming?
Folding?
etc?

EDIT: the 9400GT will NOT have enough power to use all of that 1GB of RAM, btw.

The 9500GT will put it's 512MB to better use.

Do you have both these cards on hand?

Otherwise, there are better cards from the ATi camp, in this price range.

The 9500GT, despite the "loss" of 512MB of RAM, will still be:

9500GT vs 9400GT
32SP 16SP


16 Shader Processors ahead.

They both use the same memory bus width (128bit), so there is nothing to gain from 1GB there, either.

And no amount of OC will make that 9400GT as fast as your 9500GT.

The 1GB of VRAM will be more useful in very high AA/AF (8/24) settings at 1600/1200+ resolutions. However, neither card will be able to do anything at that level.

Folding uses the CUDA capabilities of your GPU to mathematically "fold" protiens, to help find cures for many diseases (primarily).

However, it has also produced many, many "side effects" from it's (and our) research.

And it's run by a group from Stanford University.
 
the guy wants to trade his athlon x4 quad core setup for my p4/9500gt setup because i have a cooler master cosmos s case. i'm debating if i should do it.
 
yes it is that, but i he hasn't told me the case. Isn't a x4 QUAD CORE a heck of a lot better than a p4?

I had a post on that (edited out when I found out your case was 200usd), but the Athlon II X4 620 is only 100usd...
The Athlon Quad cores were made for the low, low price.
A motherboard to go along with it is only 50-100usd...


What motherboard (specifically chipset, if you don't know what motherboard model you have) do you have?

While a P4 is old, and horrid (point of view, here), the pricing of your case dictates some caution.

thats nice but i have no money. i got my cosmos s for $50 off a friend. you are telling me i should sell my case and upgrade my cpu instead of this trade? but then i wont have a case.

I'm sorry, but I cannot tell you to do anything.

I personally, hate selling.

Trading, too.


It's more then likely, you will not get enough from (the case sale + shipping) to actually buy a Core2Quad CPU of the Q6xxx class.

The Q6xxx consistently, is a smidgen slower then the Athlon II X4 620, much less the 630.


I'd recommend you wait for more responses in this thread.

However, since (I just finished reading up on these things) the Athlon X4 setup has a faster CPU than whatever your Chipset can support, and the price of your case factored in:

The 9400GT/AthlonX4620 is a somewhat better deal then the aging Pentium4/9500GT/Coolermaster setup (if local, then it's much better deal for you. If shipping, then it's just a "somewhat" better deal).

I'd still recommend waiting until morning to see if somebody else has a second opinion.
