My g/f has a computer with a MSI 915G, the processor in it is the P4 520. Since that's socket 775 can it take something like the E3200? I'm just looking for a cheap upgrade, and since there's a Fry's nearby I can snag one for cheap...

Intel does not list it any new chips as being compatitble, but why is that since the new celerons and the e5xxx's are all socket 775? Will the E3200 not be compatible with the 915G?

that stinks..

So my nnext question would be, how much better arethe chips with the 2MB cache and slightly higher clock speed? worth the cost of admission?

DDR2.

I've never changed out the mobo on an already built setup - onlly built from scratch. Is it just a scenario where I take everything off the current mobo, put the new one in, and re-hook the stuff up and it should all be ready to go?

A re-install of the OS is best. You can get the OS to detect the new hardware. Is this a custom build or a OEM build?

She got it from a custom shop - so it's more so a custom build than OEM. I'm not sure where her OS disk is though honestly, any way around that?

Custom build = OEM as well.

Try to find an OEM Windows install disk and you can go from there. No way around that.

I have my OEM disk from my custom build - also have the disks from a different dell computer. Would either of those work? She's currently running XP still.

So just to make sure - I could use my copy of xp but with her key? Also, worst case scenario - I don't use that key anyways - I upgraded to vista, then to W7, does that mean that key could be used on her computer?
