HI,
My current setup is:
E8500 core 2 duo @ stock 3.16GHz
Asus P5N-T Deluxe
4Gb Kingston DDR2 PC2-6400C5
8800gt 512mb
Windoze XP x64

I'm looking to upgrade my 8800gt but am confused as to what to get ie 260gtx (285 gtx and above are out of my price range atm) or even an ati variant, the reason i'm confused is someone suggested an ati hd 4870 or hd 4850 x2 and this may be a dumb question but will the 4870 and 4850 x2 work on an nforce board?

I use 20" lcd running 1680*1050 res and my power supply is an enermax pro 82+ (425w).
I'm from the uk so my budget is £300 max (432.64 USD).

Soild deal. Sold my 8800GT for $90.00 & it cost me $99.99 for the upgrade.

It's really a nice VC. The cooling is better then I thought. I'm o/c'ing a tad @ 790/1100 via ATI overdrive & it's 40 degrees @ idle & low-mid 50's under load. It puts my 8800GT to shame. The only very slight PITA is you'll need to use Driver Cleaner Pro to get rid of those Nvidia drivers. The ATI 9.1 have been rock-solid so far!

Hmm, a little light on the power supply. A GTX260 is probably the highest upgrade I can recommend for that PSU.

Yeah...I just found out he's from the UK & that he only has 425 watt PSU. Enermax makes soild PSU on the upside.

Back to the initial post, i was for some reason under the impression that ati cards didn't run on nforce mobo's lol..maybe it was just crossfire that i was getting mixed up with lol.

Would you suggest the 260gtx or the 4870?....always been an nvidia user but willing to change if they are "more bang for buck" as you say ;)
 
Wherever you buy from, make sure its not Overclockers.
If ever you get a problem, they make even more hard work from the situation and that often costs money and your sanity too!
They have ripped me off 3 times now and will never do it again.

The GTX260 is my preference for performance, clockability and decent PhysX support without needing another card.
I bought the EVGA GTX260 SC (EVGA has a good warranty and stepup up program) which comes with the full game Mirrors Edge.

I only put the links for overclockers as i've used them for years and when i have had a prob they have sorted me out without any probs plus only 20 mins drive away from me lol, but if you've had probs with them i acknowledge your issues ;).
I am tempted with the 260gtx now but will i be thinking afterwards "damn wish i'd got a 4870" lol
 
4870 and gtx260 are equivalent in performance for the most part. 4850x2 will outperform them both at a higher cost. i would go with either the 4870 or gtx260 (gtx260 if you think you might sli in the near future). 4850x2 would definitely be pushing it with a full load on your psu (33 amps total). if you go with the 4850x2, i would buy a better psu. and i would also make sure i have enough space for it cause it is one big and long motha!
 
yeah @OP, you might find this website pretty useful. Theres alot of information on that page including links to douzens of reviews.

And yeah, thats a good 420W unit, but an HD4850X2 would be pushing it harder than I think it'l go. You'd best stick with an HD4870, GTX 260 or if you want a GTX 280.

too low for the 260. ill say 9800 GTX+ or the ATI 3800 series.

Nope. The GTX260 will work on that Modu82+ 425W just fine. The Modu82+ 425W has 33A on the +12V rail. According to the Corsair PSU finder, Corsair recommends the 450VX for the OP's system with that GTX260 upgrade. Considering that the 450VX only has 33A on the +12V rail and every review I've read of the Modu92+ series pegs the series just as high quality as the 450VX, it should not be a problem using the GTX260 with that Modu82+ 425W PSU.

Looking at my spec sheet that came with the psu it does infact have 33a on the +12v rail, at the time when i bought that psu it was more than adequate but if it's deemed too risky i'll look at getting another psu ;)
 
I went from an 8800gt to my current gtx 260 216 and I notice a sizable impact on performance.... its not like :eek: but its like :p. Anyways, I would do it, I sold my 8800gt for $100 and only payed about $125 for the upgrade... and I got a free game...

I couldn't get the free COD5 game from newegg when buying the reference EVGA card. They had another one for $10 dollars more tha included the game but then I could not step up.
