8800GT Problems

Just wanna add my two cents in here and say this is not a power supply issue or a fan issue or any issues, these cards simply "squeal" at certain times to the point where it will actually hurt my ears.

So don't think your hearing things cause the more you push these cards well the more they squeal!

Due to the backlog and order of these cards I won't re RMA'n it anytime soon.

My card is the opposite. It squeals less if not at all when in 3D world. It only does so in UI menus and splash intro movies. Its audible then but it only lasts a couple seconds.

From Wiki..

Resonance of a circuit involving capacitors and inductors occurs because the collapsing magnetic field of the inductor generates an electric current in its windings that charges the capacitor, and then the discharging capacitor provides an electric current that builds the magnetic field in the inductor, and the process is repeated continually. An analogy is a mechanical pendulum. In some cases, resonance occurs when the inductive reactance and the capacitive reactance of the circuit are of equal magnitude, causing electrical energy to oscillate between the magnetic field of the inductor and the electric field of the capacitor.

At resonance, the series impedance of the two elements is at a minimum and the parallel impedance is at maximum. Resonance is used for tuning and filtering, because it occurs at a particular frequency for given values of inductance and capacitance.

My EVGA 8800 GT Superclock is squealing AND giving me a blank screen. Motherboard is beeping so I tried reseating it twice to no avail. Think I got a DOA ;_;.

Gonna try to test it a bit more, see if it was somehow a mistake on my part. But things aren't looking too rosy atm.

FWIW, these cards do not all apparently make this squeal. Mine is very quiet, almost as quiet as my old x1950xt with a Zalman vf900. In fact, it's so quiet and cool enough that I may not install the vf900 on the 8800gt. So far, so good. :D

Sounds like you have the DOA Orchestra playing at your place tonight. Wow squealing and DOA, I think mine was squealing in the box when I opened it.

Don't know about the rest of you, but this is the last time I'm an early adopter. I'm going back to playing the waiting game :D

Ok this quake wars game sucks for the 8800GT. I played the demo on my GTS. and I never had stuttering problems in the menu and a big ass BSOD. This is version 1.2 too. The game CAME with the card... the EVGA 8800GT KO is unstable at cool temperatures i dunno... will look into it

Update: the game just freezes with the 8800GT... argh

other games run fine. this is in windows xp

Ran the included quake wars for about 20 mins, didn't have any issues.

newest vista drivers or xp drivers released yesterday solve this. what kind of fps you getting in quake wars? I saw 60.... 2-4 frames better than my GTS

My power supply (Seasonic S12-II 500 watt) also squeals.

Its barely audible most of the time, but does get louder as the power changes. In Guildwars on two specific maps, my system squeals like a piggy. Not sure if its the videocard or the PSU or the motherboard, but its funny how it only happens on those two maps.

Its in a very high frequency range, has to be right at 20Khz or maybe even higher.

I doubt it will be fixed, as most people simply can't hear in that frequency range.

Is Quake Wars capped FPS-wise by default? I remember reading it was, that you had to apply a console variable to uncap it from 60... :). By "newest", you mean the 169.04 drivers, or something else?

Sounds like its related to FPS. I turned fraps on to see FPS in intro of Crysis and it shot up to 999 durring the EA and intel splashes where it whines alot. Might be the cap on FPS thats making this new driver not whine, but havent tested 04 yet. 999 seems high,, might not need to rma after all.

I highly doubt drivers are going to solve an electrical problem on the hardware. Besides-mine does it throughout Crysis, and in Bioshock.

I've got a pretty decent electronics background-I knew I was most likely sending the card back when I heard it. I tried the troubleshooting just to be sure and I was hopeful.

i8088-send your card back. There are obviously cards that make no sounds at all, which clearly indicates ours are defective.

Just figured out how to make my card stop squealing . I forced Vsync to ON to limit the framerate and now the card is silent while loading crysis, and other games. Seems the excessively high fps of 999+ is causing an inductor or something else to resonate.

I only hear a whine in the Crysis Intro movies when I have my headphones plugged into my computer. The card doesn't make a whining noise of its own. With the headphones unplugged, I hear nothing.

eVGA Superclocked 8800GT 512mb

Have any of you folks tried unplugging your speakers from your machine during the crysis intro? I'd be curious as to the results.

Im pretty sure thats not the issue here. I recorded the sound with a mic outside of the computer. Im familiar with what your describing but im not experiencing any type of "leakage" into the audio path. Its coming from a component on the card, with or without speakers plugged in.

x850PE in my system squeals, I think very fast memory read/writes cause it

run this Benchmark App
rthdribl_1_2 that DX9 Real-Time High-Dynamic Range Image-Based Lighting
V-Sync OFF and let it run in the hundreds of FPS and it'll squeal.
No noticeable squeal while gaming unless you enter a new map or heavy load area

Mine squeals from the load screen to in game-all it does is change in intensity. Where others might have gotten a slightly broken card, mine is completely screwed.

i hit 11k in 3dmark06 with my GTS 320mb... i really hope i did the right thing, asking for the "step-up" to the 8800GT...

/worried

That's a pretty dumb thing to worry about, considering you're not going to use the card for 3dmarking.. you're going to use it for gaming. All gaming benchmarks show the card almost on par with GTX, so your worrying is irrational.

Besides that 3Dmark is even more useless than normal the generation, just look at the 2900 vs 8800 scores...it's ridiculous
