My MSI 8800GT with stock cooling is hitting the upper 90s when I play BF:BC2 and SC2. It's always run hot; in XP and Vista using GPU-Z showed me that it was hitting the upper 80s as recently as June. I formatted and went with Windows 7 on my SSD, now 9 revisions of GPU-Z later my temps are showing upper 90s. I don't doubt the readings, but I just want to let you know how I'm getting these results.

The card has stock cooling and has never ramped the fan up - with Vista and XP, it never spun faster than 30% automatically. I used Precision to crank it to 100% in recent months, but with Windows 7 I'm seeing some scaling - under max load the fan does indeed crank up to near (if not, all the way to) max RPM, but last night my video driver failed 4 times and then BSOD.

I have a Zalman VF700 available, but I'd have to wait a couple weeks to get RAM-sinks. Do you think it oculd handle the heat from an 8800GT? I don't really want to invest in a new cooler (I wish I had gotten the Accelero S1 back when I got the card) as I don't think it's a $30 fix, but I also feel like I could ride this card out for another year so buying a GTX460 or 5850 seems like I'd be wasting some of this card's life, unless I could sell it. I play at 1680x1050 primarily, though I do occasionally hook up to my 42" 1080p TV to game. I've noticed that my 8800GT sometimes chugs then, but with a mix of medium and high settings on 1680 I rarely get problematic slowdown.

Suggestions? New card? Reverse the rear exhaust fans to be intake for cooler air on CPU and GPU?
 
clean the heatsink fins out its prolly covered in dust so theres no air going through them. Thats what happened to my 4850 after i cleaned the heatsink grills though they were idling at low 40's and the max temp only went up to the high 60's
 
the VF700 should be enough. some of the 8800gt's memory dont even get warm. ram sinks are not always necessary. chances are your cooler is filled with a ton of dust or the fan is not working. also if remember some people had issues with the stock coolers fans only spinning up to 20% or something. i forget but with rivatuner you could change default fan speed to always run at like 40% instead of 20%.
 
odds are you have some dust bunnies stuck in the heatsink.. another guy on the folding team had the same exact problem with his 9800GT.. was running mid 90's til he went nuts with can of air a couple big chunks of dust bunnies came flying out of the heatsink.. temps went from mid 90's to high 70's.. if thats not the case then most likely the huge ass glob of thermal grease they put on its probably going bad and the heatsink needs to be remounted.. and no im not kidding about the glob.. my evga 8800GT had enough thermal compound on it to mount 6 or 7 heatsinks..
 
I checked the cooler last night - it was (and still is) dust free. I reapplied AS5 to the core (apparently I did it last year and forgot) but didn't see a drop in temps. I settled on downloading Precision and cranking the fan to 100%, which took me to 78C instead of the usual BC2 96-98C. In light of this I might go back to an automated solution via Rivatuner, though I got a "missing driver" error when I installed it. This fan never fully spins up on its own, but my card still performs well so I'll just live with it for now.
 
The 88xx series (Especially the GTX) were hot from the get go as far as I remember. I know my 8800GTX would hit those temps when gaming. (Stock fan on a factory OC'd version.)

What are the ambient (Case or room.) temps when it hits those highs?
 
My 8800GT always ran incredibly hot. Cleaned it out several times and never really helped much.
 
My 9800GT idles at 66 and 82 under load.

I always felt it was a bit too high, but it seems to be the norm for these cards.
 
My 8800GT hit 100c regularly in Crysis until I flashed it with updated firmware from eVGA, which caused the fans to kick in at a lower thermal threshold. They now hit 100%, but this can also be managed by RivaTuner.

Also, I can't speak for BC2, but SC2 has had known issues with overheating cards. There are fixes involving turning on vsync and enabling framerate capping in the variables.txt file.

Well, many 9800gt were the 55nm die shrinks, so they didn't have massive temps.

Of course, many AIB vendors reduced the capabilities of the HSF cooling them, too... (cost saving).

My 8800GT died & I was sent this 9800GT. I was hoping for the 55nm, but got a 65nm instead.

The card has been solid tho. I just wish temps were a bit lower with stock HSF.
