Amazingly, The WU becomes unstable before the cards normally fry. I can't think of how much baked equipment we would have on this forum if the WU stayed stable while the GPU cooked.

I'm glad for this to be the case. My Athlon continued to crunch a WU clear to the point where part of it turned black years ago.

That shouldn't be too hard to believe when you consider how many units don't stay stable when your hardware is perfectly fine. :D

Years ago it read like a NYC phone book.

When we first got the GPU client we where all worried that we would be toasting $200 vid cards left and right. I'm guessing that we haven't lost more than a dozen.

Stock: I'm not sure how to get the toaster above 60Hz

OC-ed: I took the 240v line from the oven and ran it to the blender, If I try and turn it off I might lose a finger.

[H]ard OC: Eventually the microwave will melt, but it spectacular while it lasts. It cooks the food on the kitchen table.

I'm sorry. Before you shot me down, I still was flying in the air with silent PC.

Then... the 88 flak called F@H got me.

Now, I did a minor OC (because of the tiny 50mm fan, and my expecting a 9600GSO soon, so I shouldn't need to send this card too far off into the abyss of OC death, I do intend to let somebody else have it, after all), because it's getting colder nowadays.

That is for the single core/standard client for CPUs. I have no clue beyond that.

And on the OC.

The card will become unstable if it gets to hot, the client will crash stoping the folding, and the card will quickly cool down.

It's very hard to fry a GPU folding....... I've tried.

It's a whiney 50mm fan (no drawing comparisons to me here... I've already covered that base now.../backs away slowly)

Ach.. I have a spare socket 370 HSF I could rig to help the cooling process... (did you know, the Intel socket 370 HSF has 3 pins?).

I'll try to see if I can reach 700 PPD on this 8500GT before tommorrow (takes a long time to confirm, lol).
 
Just rev it up and see what ya get. Point a 120mm fan at it can crank the shaders.

When you get the 9600GSO, do the same.

If the client is unstable it will crash and you will have to restart it.

If however you have a dose of talent, you might freeze the whole system and a reboot will be needed.

In each case, back the shaders off a bit and see if it wont run stable. For those who run their rigs to the max, if they up their shaders one notch the system would nto be stable. But they found a happy place and let the rig go.

How long is our hardware expected to last? I was kinda hoping (begging) for 3 years...

On the other hand, the Intel Socket 370 HSF seems to be doing wonders, via the back (passive) cooler atachment point. It's not too hot, at the moment. But then the 8500GT is not a high TDP card.

I agree with this advice. I have a 120mm cooling all my multi-GPU systems and it is very helpful for stability, especially on hot days. Even if you can't increase the shader clocks, the added stability and cooler temps will be very beneficial in preventing the odd crash, not to mention increase componentry life. :cool:
 
In 2 years you will be able to get a GTX260 for under $75, why get all concerned about a $25 card?

It's still under 3 years, isn't it:D

I'll do that after I actually setup a 'multi GPU' rig. Got my trusty milling bit, and a spare PCIe1 slot to work on (they do work, according to the F@H forum).

These low profile cards are not just 25USD, lol.
 
Hmmmm.... That could make it more intersting..

Us (other) hardware magicians have stuffed hotbox 9800GT (well... there is actually a lot profile version...) cards into slimline systems. (HP Slimline thread, to be exact).

I'll just stick to higher end hardware, I've compromised a bit too much for the past few years. Thanks for the link, Kendrak!
 
BUMP:

ASUS OEM card, came in HP Slimline system (actually, still in one...)
No OC without crashing. Since my 9600GSO is probably going to arrive tomorrow, I'll just throw in the towel of OC dissappointment.
