Hi everyone,

I got a new Silverstone SG-02F SFF mATX Case and I need some suggestions for 2 fans. These fans must be in the 80mm flavor.

These 2 fans will go above the video card area, but I cannot stand noise. I understand the video card will probably be the noisiest part in my computer but I would like to minimize noise from the fans if possible.

Do you guys have any suggestions? I want to look at relatively silent fans but not fans that will break the bank (ie. paying over $15/fan is NOT good). Do you guys have any ideas? I would greatly appreciate it!
 
wow, expensive. do you know anything about the scythe kama's? or kama 2's? I wonder how those compare?
 
Well out of those two I would reccommend the 1000 RPM one since silence seems very important to you. I don't have any experience with those fans, I just know that if you buy the Noctua you will be happy with it, whereas the other fans are more of a gamble.
 
Also, if you have two GPU and need to use a xfire/sli bridge, the angled mount will not allow it, unless if you have a (specifically) two slot sli/crossfire bridge.
 
@jeremyshaw i don't know what you're talking about but I'm not doing crosffire for my 5850 and my simple gigabyte board wont do crossfire at full speeds.

I guess I will go noctua then. I will pick up a pair when i get my paycheck! (end of month so 1 1/2 more weeks)
 
Here is a pic of the Crossfire Section. I think any crossfire bridge will fit in the second slot, maybe not the first one closest to the back end of the computer.

I bought two of those Noctua 80mm fans.. :rolleyes:

On another note, Do guys know any good 60mm fans? I'm looking to buy two 60mm fans to attach to my SG-02 in the CPU area.

Most xfire/SLI bridges arch "up" quite a bit. trust me, I have tried with 8800gt cards (SLI finger is pushed way back) and with HD5770 crossfire, in the SG02F, and the middle of the bridge always hits the fan, no matter what. I pushed the bridge "down" with dual 8800gt, because the single slot coolers had space inbetween them. The HD5770 cards weren't so lucky, so I just removed that fan.

Either way, I'm sorry, I don't have any 60mm fan recomendations. Are you trying to add them next to the CPU socket area? The case doesn't have clearance for that to happen on the inside. I ended up ziptying 80mm fans (at an angle) to the side of the case, and dual 40mm at the back to draw out air.

The sheer noise drew me to the P180mini within a week, lol :p
 
Yeah, trying to add them next to the CPU socket area. i was going to watercool the cpu intially but I didn't realize I can't take out the HD cage to put in a res/pump there. A 120.2 Rad would have been mounted to the outside but that's all bunk now.

Thus, I'm parting out my watercooling gear and going air for this gaming SFF.

I put a 80mm next to the side with the CPU and they're too big. I think 60mm might do the trick

Well, there are single bay pump/res combos, but iirc, you are using both 5.25 bays, right?

May I ask what both were for? I might have a few ideas (if you still are looking at WC).
 
I have a DVD Burner in one bay and a 3.5in HD in the other. The 3.5" HD is mounted onto an anti vibration silicone and fits snugly in the 5.25" bay. I also have another 2.5" SSD that's sitting on velcro in the HD Bay.

I'm concerned about the effectiveness of the pump/res combo. I still have an apogee xt and a d5 vario as well as 1/2" id barbs/tubing (I'm thinking about switching out the barbs for 3/8" id 5/8" od tubing with 90° compressions if possible on the cpu block)
 
I really wanted to keep the DVD drive but I can part with it I suppose. I can fit the 3.5" HD in the HD Bay and velcro the SSD onto that. This would free up the two 5.25" Bays.
 
I think there was enough clearance to put a 3.5" HD in the HD Bay after taking out the OEM 80mm fan from the HD Bay. I'm not 100% sure. Will have to try it out to make sure.

I've been looking on frozen cpu for a bay res/pump combo but can't find any

This would effectively solve my problem with cooling my i5 760 in a little airflow case. It's a shame I bought the Scythe Big Shuriken and is going to be delivered today.

I really wanted to watercool but am now contemplating if I should really do it. This means I wouldn't need to flip the fan on the big shuriken and wouldnt need the 60mm case fans anymore.

I guess it depends on whether the 3.5" HD will fit in the HD Cage because of clearance issues with my 5850.

It would be an awesome rig huh?

Once you remove the 80x25mm fan, the first slot will fit any GPU, while clearing the HDD bay. Assuming you are using 90 degree SATA connectors.

Case in point, my sig rig was in a SG02 until recently :cool:
 
I so put on the shuriken and temps are pretty dismal still.. I even put a gentle typhoon on top of the scythe fan (which was flipped to have air pulled from the heatsink instead of pushed into the heatsink) to help facilitate better airflow into the PSU.

The air out the back of the PSU is pretty hot and the PSU case seems even hotter.

SC2 might not be a good benchmark for CPU usage but I think I was creeping around 65°C and around 45°C idle. Sound about right?

65°C seems pretty high for a CPU no?

For an Intel CPU on aircooling in a teeny case, no. For an AMD, that's too hot.
 
I realize I may not have put the CPU info. I'm running an i5 760. I've decided to push to water and let go of the scythe big shuriken. what a journey for a SFF gaming build huh

I have the xspc dual 5.25 bay reservoir for laing d5 on the way and should be delivered next thurs! til then, big shuriken with the high temps.
 
the xspc res/pump housing combo was the only way to do this since the hard drive cage in the sg-02f is not removable.. nowhere to put both the d5 pump and micro res internally elsewhere. the rad will forced to the outside unfortunately.

will be sacrificing my dvd burner and putting the hd that was on hard drive noise absorbers into the hard drive cage..

i guess it's the price i have to pay for going SFF and wanting good temps..

i didn't really use my dvd burner that often, just used it to install games that I bought at b&m stores (last one being sc2)..

not sure about if i want to buy an external dvd drive sine I would have to pay more than $25 for those.. i think i'll manage until i have to use the dvd burner again. HA! :rolleyes:
 
btw, installed the noctua fans onto the 80mm cutouts near the graphics card and one of them seems to have trouble starting up when i turn on the computer (both are using the adaptor with the resistor on it for running the fan at low noise)

seems like i have to give it a gentle push and off it goes.. maybe i will try taking off the resistor and letting it run at full speed.
