Here is a build for a buddy of mine..he wants to stay at $800 bucks. Just under- $900 Total= $885
No real gaming just some video editing and slide show making.

Now im not sure but think the newer PSU have diff connectors than the older ones..besides the 24 pin ?? And on a build like this what -watt power supply should be needed / used ??

Please answer the following question:
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? UEFI? etc.

As for the parts, there are some issues:
- Motherboard seems to be overpriced for what your buddy is using the PC for. Also, you're not taking advantage of MC's $50 off Z77 motherboard deal with purchase of a 3570K.
- The RAM is overpriced
- The Hard drive is a tad overpriced
- If the case still uses 80mm fans, it may not provide enough cooling or cable management for a modern PC
- AS5 is pretty outdated these days on account of its curing time requirement. The Arctic Cooling MX-4 is the better choice. Cools just as well but no curing time whatsoever.
- IF the PSU is as old as the case, it won't be useable with a new PC.
- SSD is tad overpriced.

The difference between OEM and retail is that you cannot move the OEM license to another PC in the future. The retail lets you move the license to a new PC. Also, you cannot use the SSD for both his OS drive and SSD cache. You're better off just using the SSD for the OS drive. Greater performance that way.
 
1) Yes RAID 1, in the future he plans on buying another HDD for Mirror backup. (which i will try to set up for him) im new to Raid
2) Yes USB 3.0 for fast loading of his slideshows and pic's to Flash
3) Yes Sata 6Gb
4) UEFI ?? No idea what that is ATM....Just now haveing my Coffee :p
5) He plans on just use'n the iGPU on the CPU...But at least he can always upgrade...and if he does it will be a single GPU ( low-to mid range card... if that)
6) the reason I suggested use'n some of the SSD card as cache was due to Mobo...Which brings me to the reason why I did not go for the Z77- V Pro that was offered at $169. Not sure about him wanting or needing Wifi ( not the best reveiws about that ) also Im thinking he is going to need a power supply OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular Item #: N82E16817341017 * Newegg $69 So,cutting the 20 bucks extra for the -V pro will help stay close to Budget. (if I can talk him into the Extra cash I would go for the Z77-V PRO)

7) Budget...you say the prices are a bit High on my picks....I am open to suggestions :)

To save a few bucks switch over from AS5 to MX2 from Mwave. (Cost is about $3 on sale and shipped from time to time. Great cooling ability, no need to for a cure time and it's cheap.
 
I also just read the OP post and I agree. The RAM is overpriced (look to Neweg sales and MC if he requires new components, otherwise look to used RAM). I would suggest he gets a new case and PS. Why not? He is getting new for everything else. I would swich out the hard drive for a 2TB Seagate/Samsung drive on sale at the Egg for $99 if he needs only 1 drive. Otherwise, I would suggest a RAID 1 (for data security and maximum uptime) or 2 drives; one for data in the pc and 1 for external backup (probably the best route since max uptime is not critical in a home environment generally).

Go for the Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H or the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H motherboards as your friend isn't overclocking.

Not a good choice at all for a few reasons:
- It's OCZ so poor customer support
- It's a mediocre Sirfa design
- It wasn't that great.

Go for this RAM:
$39 - G.Skill Value Series F3-10600CL9D-8GBNT 2 x 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM

Go for this drive which is on SALE right now:
$90 - Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

HSF wise, you can go for this cheaper HSF:
$30 - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus HSF for LGA 1366 and LGA 1156

In terms of best bang for the buck, the larger 128GB offers a better deal:
$125 - Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SSD

Case wise, for a decent but cheap case, I recommend this:
$50 - NZXT Source 210 Elite White with Black Front Trim ATX Case

As for the PSU, I recommend this:
$53 - Antec NEO ECO 400C 400W PSU
 
Well, looks like im getting close and my buddy said ok on a build upto 1K. I am still try'n to keep it as low as I can and still get a good quality build...

But did like the 128MB SSD, NZTX case..

Im still open for Powersupply and Mobo.. options *Note* Im used to ASUS boards....

The key word is "if". It doesn't sound like your friend is going to add a dedicated video card. In addition, it depends on which card he upgrades too. Something like the HD 6870 would still work just fine on that 400W PSU.

However, if you can buy today, this larger PSU will cost about the same as that Antec if you use the promo code:

With all the changes and such, what's the total now? Also, what's the current/updated build list?

Ok, don't get this motherboard. Again, since you're apparently near a Microcenter, get the motherboard from Microcenter when you buy that i5 3570K since MC will knock off $50 off any Z77 mobo when purchased with the i5 3570K. Hence why I recommended those Gigabyte mobos in the first place: They're available from Microcenter and therefore will be valid for that $50 off promo. That Asus isn't avaiable from MC. So grab one of those Gigabytes.

Still overpriced as hell. No 8GB set of RAM should cost more than $46 to $47 at most. Go with the RAM I recommended earlier since that DDR3 1600 RAM offers ZERO performance increase over DDR3 1333 RAM:
$39 - G.Skill Value Series F3-10600CL9D-8GBNT 2 x 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM

If you're still insistent on getting DDR3 1600 RAM, again, it should not cost more than $46 to $47 since you can get 16GB of DDR3 1600 RAM for $93 shipped:
$93 - G.Skill Sniper F3-12800CL9Q-16GBSR 4 x 4GB DDR3 1600 RAM

Again, it does not appear that your friend will be adding a dedicated GPU to his system. Even if he was, this PSU would still be overkill unless he was adding a HD 7970 or GTX 680. The 520W PSU that I recommedned, which is currently on sale, is good enough for that setup. However if you want modular, then this Seasonic isn't too bad.

Go for the MX-4. Requires no curing time and performs the same as, if not better than, the AS5.

Huh? I think you're very confused here. All new mobos comes with SATA 3.0Gb/s. So no way to avoid it. Or did you mean SATA 6.0Gb/s? If so, the main reason to get SATA 6.0Gb/s are for SSDs as SATA 3.0Gb/s isn't enough bandwidth for most new SSDs. Yes hard drives do not benefit form SATA 6.0Gb/s.

Im a Bit confused about the MOBO's im picking..they both have spots for a mSata SSD..seeing im already use'n a 120GB SSD for my OS would an additional mSata be of any help/speed boots ?

Just an update to the Build- It turned out AWESOME ! ! !

FYI--the EVO 212 CPU cooler had only a C-hair of space to spare before hitting the other side of the case. Measurements said and I had figured I had 10mm to spare but the distance of the standoffs and Cpu height made it Oh so close.....

Well got the Build together...AWESOME ! ! !
Get 7.9 on windows Exp index for SSD
7.6 for CPU(weird)
6.5 for Integrated video...but get choppy play on Utube..But thats for another THREAD
