7970 Purchasing Thread

Thanks for all the feedback guys.
I'd probably never do WC, at least not on this card, as by the time I decide to go to a true WC solution, I'll be using a new video card.

I might actually go CF since I recently moved to a new high res monitor, so there is a possibility of needing to go dual down the road. My case is the Corsair 650D, so I think it should fit another DCU2, but really, there's nothing saying that I have to go with another DCU2 for CF down the road.

Again, price is exactly the same on the 2 cards for me at $600, and I've ordered both, but will cancel the one I don't want. It looks like I'll have the Asus first (early next week), so I may stick with it.

Out of curiosity, where'd you snag the DC2? I've been waiting on this card since I sold my 6950s a couple weeks ago, but can never seem to find it in stock. If you decide you don't want it, I'll buy it from you.

I have a feeling in the next 1-2 weeks there will be a lot more in stock. It seems Asus is moving away from the reference design and going with only there DirectCu version.

From legitreviews
From the sounds of it, once the ASUS HD7970 DirectCU II Top edition video card is released it will be replacing the ASUS HD7970-3GD5-3DI2S that is based on the AMD reference design that is currently available. This was news to us as we thought they would both co-exist.

NCIX Canada. It was the only one available in the whole country and I spotted it last night online. Ordered it immediately and called their HQ today to confirm I'd get it, and they said they're transferring to the store I selected for pickup. Should have it by Tuesday/Wed next week.

You need to register Sapphires. I don't think you can transfer the warranty

*Unofficially*, I don't think Sapphire cares whether you're the original owner or not. I RMA'd a second-hand Sapphire 6970 back in December and it was a piece of cake...

After sending in the initial RMA paperwork, the RMA people asked for a purchase invoice, but I didn't have one. Because of that, they said I had to pay a $15 processing fee. I said fine, they issued me a RMA #, and I sent my card + $15 check on its merry way. One week later, they sent me a brand new card (not a refurb or rebuilt card). Aside from the $15 and shipping costs, there was no hassle whatsoever.

So, does anyone know the size of the little white fan connector on these boards?

If I replace the cooler, I want to see if I can tap into the PWM signal on them and use it to control 120mm fans through a sealed water cooler.

Yay, my DirectCU2 Top edition is in, that was super fast, sadly I can't pick it up until tomorrow. :(

Has anyone tried the Asus DirectCU II version of the 7950?

I have one OC to 1025mhz on stock voltage, I put a manual fan speed on msi afterburner for the fan to stay at 0 up until 80C. The temps under furmark load hit 73C with fans at 1100rpm (or 0% in msi)... Yeah pretty sick.

Interesting. Thanks for the feedback. Hexus.net did an article where they compared the 7950 and 7970 @ identical clocks.

http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/34761-amd-hd-7950-vs-hd-7970-clocks/?page=6

7970s will likely get the best OCs and I don't believe most folks will be running those cards @ 1250-1300 on air 24/7 even if they can.

A 7950 @ 1150 will likely be the same thing as a 7970 @ 1125. Or close enough.

Enjoy your card. The Asus DirectCU II cards are nice.

I want more places to do a comparison. Or people. Can those who have the 7970 down clock it to 7950 speeds? And post a compariso. If the difference is 10% thats not bad at all.

That one has the lifetime warranty BTW!

If you register it within the 30 days, and only for the original owner. They also don't support overclocking and it will void your warranty (if they choose to determine you overclocked when RMAing). If you don't register it has a short 2 year warranty.

The best warranty (although 3 years) seems to be elsewhere, both MSI and Asus warranties transfer, and MSI officially supports overclocking.

Perhaps you know that, but considering it's an expensive card just laying out the details.

This is very interesting. I'd like to know if they will do this with the HD 79xx series. Several manufacturers have even shortened the warranties on the 79xx series... (3->2 years, tightened restrictions).

Newegg shipped my 7970 pretty damn fast, ordered Tuesday evening and it arrived Thursday evening.

I'm pretty happy with the speeds compared to my 570 SLI setup in the games I play. I miss the PhysX in Arkham City, and some of the 3D Vision stuff, but all in all I think this was a worthwhile investment, saving me on energy and airflow. Plus, I've never gone all out for a generation's top card (excluding dual-gpu).

I totally agree with the recommendation, although I'm pretty sure there's no way for them knowing if it was OC'd or not
