So I am Wondering if anyone has heard any news about whether there will be enough 7970's available to meet demand on launch day.

Te Reason I want to know is that I am thinking about selling the last my GPU's this week but there is a chance that I might be out of town on the 9th and not be able to purchase a 7970 till the tenth and I don't want to get stuck with out a gpu for a month while I wait for retailers to get them back in stock.

so if anyone has any info to share in this regard it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that it will be hard to get for a while but I think that a lot of people will wait and see what kinds of non-reference products come out due to the great overclocking the 7970 seems to be capable of.

ati cards always sell out and go on backorder with insane price mark ups for the first month or so. I wouldn't be surprised with this launch.

I played the F5 game with the HD 5970 and got it at retail price. The next day the markup was $50 then eventually $50+. If you want to get at 7970, makesure you get your cup of coffee at 11:30 PM EST and start refreshing :p I have to play this game myself. When the HD 5970 was out, there were some good links here on HardOCP AMD thread of people linking where they got it form. Tigerdirect and Newegg where the two I remember at the top of my head. Hopefully those same people do this for the HD 7970 release :)

Sigh looks like Ill have to sell my cards try to get the time off work and hope for the best.

Find a "not in stock" 7970 link on Newegg and refresh the brand you want over and over. Don't focus on the main 7970 listing page or you'll lose out.

Mwave.com and Ewiz.com are two good places to check also.

Pre-order. Only way to nab top end cards on release with less price gouging.

When does Amazon usually get them in is it same day or later on?

I'm hoping to do the Amazon pre-order ASAP. I keep checking every day.

I'm guessing Newegg will have this for sale, 2 or 3 models at first, with maybe a few more to follow within a few hours the evening of the 8th around 10 - 11pm CST. Normally, the very first prices will be MSRP. or should be. Hoping to pick up an Asus branded card, or MSI. Sucks its so damn expensive. Not happy about that at all.

I never tried Ewiz.com. But I tried Mwave.com and was pretty satisified with their service. So far newegg and tigerdirect are my top two. I wish newegg allowed pre-ordering. I really hate to play the F5 game.

It would be a presumptuous to sell your current cards till you actually get a new card in. I have been in this business for many years as a system builder and owner. Ecery anticipated (and some not so much) of a new video card technology is a crap shoot. AMD/Nvidia always release a very low amount of cards to begin with to the general market ensuring that the large OEM's such as Dell etc. have the supply they need. Cards typically do release either right at the MSRP or a little above, then wham once the market has dried up, the price sky rockets. This is all artificial inflation lining the pockets of the companies selling the cards and creates buzz for everyone who "has to have one".

Personally I like to use the last gen card for a lower price and pretend that I have the best. Well technically I do have the best from the period it was released in, just not that day. For myself upgrading from my current 580 GTX to a 7970 for a 10-20% increase in performance that I can not tell unless I run some benchmark is a waste of hard earned money. I will wait till the cards go below $400. Much the same way I did for this one.

How do I find a not in stock link? I have a gift card for newegg (2 actually) so I'm hoping to nab it there.

I need to buy in Newegg too, I have $120 in newegg gift cards/coupons and $475 in paypal. So I wanna buy 3 cards and sell my my 3 6970s so I hope to only be around $400 outta pocket.

So, when is the exact day and time they are going to be available for purchase?

^ January 9th supposedly.

And yeah you need backup cards if it's that important to you, that you'll die if you sell your current. I suppose I could limp by on my 9800GT, play some older games in the backlog, but wouldn't sell my 480 for instance, if it was the end of the world to me I couldn't play something. Gouging and hard to come by is the rule, not the exception with papaer launches nowadays.
