how is the new 7970 "ghz" is it better, does it perform better than before? is it a competitor for the 680 gtx?

Radeon HD 7970 Ghz is the HD 7970 chip running at 1 Ghz core clock and 1.05 Ghz boost clock with the memory at 6 Ghz. Its faster than GTX 680 especially at 1440p / 1600p. But you don't need the Ghz edition label. Any factory overclocked HD 7970 (1 Ghz) can give you the same performance by running at 1.05 Ghz and 6 Ghz memory. In fact the HD 7970 (1 Ghz) chips can easily run at 1125 - 1150 Mhz with stock voltage and even higher with voltage tweaking.

i bought and tested 2 cards 7970s. flashed with ghz bios

they are going back, i am tired of having a hair dryer in my desktop.

Went back to my GTX 570 , i can run 95 percent of the games anyway. Maybe by christmas they will release something that uses less power and heat and pushes more frames.

i have 2...they are very quiet...

do you have your tower next to your head?

sorry, you sound like a troll..

Every test on the weg has shown that the GHz edition is loud. So his experience sounds legit, yours on the other hand does not.

The reviews tested the ref HD 7970 Ghz card . But partners are going to release custom cooler based Radeon HD 7970 Ghz cards like Sapphire HD 7970 Toxic or Gigabyte HD 7970 Ghz

In fact HD 7970 (1 Ghz) cards with custom coolers have been available for 6 months and have been reviewed very well at hardocp.

He specifically asked about the GHz edition.
It is pure fail from AMD to let sites review a configuration that won't be released by the majority of partners. Some (Club3D afaik) stick with the reference solution in all aspects, so one would have to watch out there.

Even the reference 7970 was fairly loud (personal experience)... and the "ghz" edition is purportedly even louder per review sites. Meanwhile, the GTX 670 and 680s I've owned have all been very quiet, both reference and non-reference.

yeah definitely buying a ref cooler based HD 7970 Ghz card is not a good idea. But with a decent custom cooler noise and temps can be controlled pretty well.

sorry, i meant i have 2 7970s, and they are quiet,

I have a water loop, so id definitely hear them if they were loud.

my 6950 i could hear, these not so much.

I guess it depends on your case...

Lol a troll , i guess you should look at my time here on Hard OCP

anyway maybe i need to get a bigger case with a motherboard that has the slots further apart for crossfire and big mofo 240mm fan to exhaust from the back but even then that wouldnt do crap because the cooler inefficient at cooling the video processor and exhausting the hot air. AMD needs to get with the times or hire a new engineer because they are way behind the curve. I guess i should of done more research on this prior.

I even went back to stock crossfire and still is loud. My single GTX 570 is silent and idles at 48c with 2 monitors. My Single crossfire was at 65-70c idle , 90+ full load. I thought it was funny i was surfing the internet all of sudden streaming some you tube videos and all i heard was a hair dryer come on which makes you jump up and think to yourself WTF was that. Anway

The reference AMD cooler sucks and so does the drivers period along with the power consumption.

Unless you want to spend megabucks on a aftermarket cooler and watercooling blocks forget AMD. If you do all that you should just get two GTX 680s then and call it a day because they are alot better.

Oh the video monitor sleep bug in the driver 12.7 beta was not waking up for me.. Also another factor for me was owning the asus gen-z , I am definitely not using my onboard sound vs my x-fi card.. Just so i can have two cards on the mobo take up all my slots while gaining a loud hair dryer and space heater in the summer. That was my fault but now i know when i upgrade to get a the maximus V when it is released and get a better sound card and some good SLI cards to go along with it. I am waiting until Christmas and i am sure Nivdia will release a GTX670 TI or 680TI with even lower power consumption that will blow away the AMD 7970.

i have none of those issues..

and i have an x-fi HD platinum as well...

although i do have the sapphie dual-Xs....so i suppose i wouldnt know about stock...

If you have the dual fan version it is 18DB quieter which is equal to a GTX 680

ok, i withdraw my toll comment

however, given the option, who in their right mind would buy stock?

Its kinda odd but my HD 7970 Sapphire reference based is barely noticeable to hear, even after the BIOS flash to make it GHz edition. It still quieter than the rest of the fans of my relatively old Antec 900 case, may be that depends of the games and the load it can put on the GPU.

I had 2 cards in crossfire with a gene-z board running 2 monitors see signature

Hairdryer wouldnt stop and was so annoying.

I think the only way to solve this is to buy a mobo which has the SLI slots far apart and buy a huge case with lots of fans. Might lower your temps

You are just better off buying a 7970 with dual fans especially running a case like ours.
The reference cooler sucks and cant push the air out .

When you run 2 monitors it raises your temps

yeah correct. there are so many good custom coolers like Gigabyte Windforce, Sapphire Dual X, HIS IceQ, Powercolor PCS+, MSI Lightning so anybody who picks the stock cooler has no one but himself to blame.

Yeah but who would of known, stock coolers on nivida are still 18 DB quieter then AMD ancient design

To the OP question, the ghz cards arent meant for 1 monitor but multimonitor setups with really high resolutions - hense the 6gb of memory. I wouldnt buy it if you only have 1 monitor setup. As one person said theres multiple cards available that are stocked overclocked if youre just looking for a fast card.

What 6GB? Only special editions have 6GB. Regular GHz Edition cards have 3GB.

the size of memory is very important for amd, since they have been primarily using MSAA antialising which is maxed out the graphic card resources including memory usage, and that's why amd also gives other treatment with memory interface 384 bit compared with nvidia gtx 680 which is only has 256 bit wide

Hey mates.
I might have just found a solution here as I broke my 7970 trying to do this, but gigabyte has a jumper/switch for dual bios? what do i do to flash the old bios back? either directly through the switch or with my old bios saved.

It seems I've given a bit of a rush last night when I just received my Gigabyte Ati Radeon HD 7970 OC (1ghz stock) , and tried flashing to make it into GHZ Edition (for boosted memory from 1375 to 1500)

Now, it won't boot or anything, I've tried all possible programs to flash, it also ruined both Windows 7 and Windows 8 for me, I'm trying to reinstall W7 ultimate x64 now, if there's any possibility of flashing a card that isn't recognized thoroughly (not in gpuz) not in the 2 gigabyte software - easy tune something and gigabite bios, and it won't recognize it (the bios tab grays out) , so does on the other program. in W8 ati flash ati winflash and other software apparently aren't compatible, and I don't know exactly how to make dos work on the UEFI bios motherboard Asrock Extreme4 z77. Also running a SSD raid (2x180GB Intel s-ata 3)

Can you guys please advise? I will install W7 now and need a windows or dos solution afterwards, as thorough as possible, I've just spent my 2 salaries on that videocard, so I can't take no, it's broken and also lost its waranty for an answer. I have saved the original bios (stupid me, at least that).

Thing is I've done several bios flashes so far and other 'risky' things, but all turned out just fine, so didn't know that if it wasn't a reference card would turn this way....

Please advise, I'd be a thousand times grateful.

John.

Will your card not run on either bios? You should have only borked one of them.

Reference coolers exhaust hot air out of the case, which is preferred when running dual card setups. I game with amped Q701 headphones anyways so noise is not a concern for me.

You can hotflash it. Flip the switch so you use your backup bios, boot the computer and flip the switch back when computer is on and dos or windows is loaded. Then you can flash the old bios back. :)
