If you were to put a 7950 @ 880mhz core/ 1000mhz memory up against a 6970 @ 1027mhz core/ 1500mhz memory would they perform the same??? In theory they would have the same fillrate and bandwidth..... Guess what I am asking is did they optimize the new cores or just add TMU's and clock speed. Someone should do a comparison.....

Yeah but I didnt see any adjusting of clocks for the 6970...You would need to increase the clocks on the 6970 to compensate for less TMU's (96 vs 112)...

the 79xx are a new architecture all together, more similar x86 now I believe.

Right.... I guess what I want to know is clock for clock would a HD7000 family beat a 6900 and by how much...

The HD7870 with 1536 ALU’s Clocked at 950Mhz, 96 Texture Units, 24SIMDs, 32ROPs and 2GB GDDR5 @ (1453mhz)5.8Gbps 186GB/S along a 256-bit wide memory interface.

Will have to wait and find out.....
