7900gt superclock 3dmark artifacts

So i have a pair of these 7900gt superclocks, and i'm trying to test the hell out of them to make sure they don't have any problems. I've been testing them separately (as single cards), and both of them show artifacts (huge black flashing polygons) in the last graphics test in 3dmark (the one with the snow). At that point, when i exit, the desktop is completely screwed up as well. So i lowered the cards to non-superclocked speeds, and the artifacts on this test went away, which would point to bad graphics cards, right?

But there's a catch...i get some rainbow colored artifacts in the CPU tests as well, and those didn't go away. Can the graphics cards affect the cpu tests? Or does this point ot another problem as well?

x2 3800+ (stock)
2gb pc3200c2pt Corsair (2-3-3-6-1T) @ 2.75V
(2) evga 7900gt superclock (stock)
evga nf41 nforce4 sli mobo
enermax 620w liberty psu

Any ideas? Thanks.

yes, there's a thread on evga.com about this problem. An NVIDIA tech answered some questions about the speeds being incorrect for the hardware. Many people are having to rma their cards.

My situation. upgraded my perfectly functioning 7800gt SLI setup to the 7900gt sli setup. Single card I get crazy artifacts in the desktop. Forget about two of them. Both cards do the same thing. I guess I"m going to have to cross ship these babies. Arggghhh.

yeah, that's what i'm afraid of...oh well, it's better to have cards that work i suppose.

temps are ~68C on full load.

Exactly why I am keeping my 7800GT SLI setup until D3D10 or a game brings them to their knees.

You're lucky, anything in 3D will artifact or completely crash my computer for me.

I have to run my 7900GT at 550mhz core and 1ghz memory. :(

i have 2 7900gt co sc's, serial numbers 0000018 and 0000056 and both work great. they oc'd to 570/1800, and then i did the 1.4v voltage mod with a little rear window defroster paint, and now they oc to 670/1920, artifact free, according to ati tool. stock cooling. latest drivers, 84.25 i think.

Did you do the mem volt mod as well because I don't know how the heck you're getting 1920 mem without a volt mod.

no i didnt. but coolbits now overclocks much ram higher and so does ati tool. i have no idea why. its not like i would have any reason to make it up. i may try the pencil mod for the memory anyway.

Actually, when normally overclocking a 7900GT, upping the core speeds near-max often seems to decrease the maximum memory overclock. So, giving the CPU more voltage/headroom would therefore enable an even better memory overclock logically. That's just my take :).

Err.... I knew I should have gotten an ati..

550 1580.. THIS CARD HAS NO RAM COOLING!!! none at all....I gently added ocz coppers with some of the fins removed to the 4 that are covered by the heastsink. The others are open so the sinks fit fine unmodded.

Oh yea!! First boot into windows with evga provided driver.. I've got rainbow colored dots (yea in 2d) I jacked with it for a day. Now even in the bios i have colored checkers..

I tried new drivers got more colors and some hardlocks...EVGA guy said he cant rma unless i test it on another powersuply and board.. instead of telling him "hold on i will" or "i already did that" Yes, I did the unthinkable.. I admitted that I had no other pci-e system in the house and surely not another farking 200 dollar pcp&c 510er just laying around

So I called again today talked to someone different and got a cross ship form and rma number in 5 min flat.. All i did was tell the guy "The guy I spoke to last night was a dickhead" reply. "Who, Scott?" Yea man. That guy was surely smoking something special...

Was the retarded night person's name Scott?? There are two who know.. I am not one of them.. So if not!! Please accept my [H] apology
If so..I hope you rot in hell..

I've gotta wait a few days for the x-ship form to go through.. im not sending this one untill a new one is shipped. If They screw me around long enough it will be back to newegg for an ati.. I've got about 20 days left to RMA to the egg...

Untill then.. The saga continues... Sorry for the rant. If I seem pissed.. It's because I am.
