The Best Buy ad in the paper today has the PNY Verto GeForce 7900 GS 256MB PCI Express Graphics Card for $149.99 after $50 instant rebate. Online link

I'm still in the dark ages with a 6600GT so I guess its upgrade time. :)
 
...best buy has a worthwhile, no, a nice deal, with no MIR at that? what the hell is going on here? three year warranty, not so great.. but the price balances it out IMO. good find!



comforting to see that price @B&M especially though, it would seem the x1950pro has helped normalize prices for the mid/high mid-range segment of the gfx market

I would guess this sale is a first-indicator of 7900GS cards dropping in price over the next few months. At this point, it's a good deal. It's also a worthy upgrade over the 6800GS (it's basically the next generation of the same price-point card). I think in a few months a number of 7900GS cards will come out at that price, but right now you're saving money, and right now it is a deal.

Future pricing hinges on whether nVidia quickly comes out with midlevel DX10 parts (i.e., 8800GS, 8600 line of cards, etc.). If they do, current midrange cards will drop, possibly significantly. If they don't, there will probably still be some drop (due to high-end 79xx cards dropping to clear them out), but I'd guess not quite as much. Note that DirectX 10 games probably won't be available in quantity for another year; there will be quite a transition, and first-gen DX10 games will have a DX9-rendering path too since there won't be enough DX10 graphics cards to drive sales without it.

If your games are playing great right now, it doesn't hurt to wait. If there are detail settings you're turning off that you really want enabled, or you want to play one resolution higher than your 6800GS card can, this is a great card. If I've only managed to confuse you, have fun --the GPU market changes over so rapidly, and a lot of it is a judgement call based on your budget, what games you want to plan, and what resolution you want to play them at. :)

I've only just gone from a new-in-early-2005 Radeon X800XL 256MB to a used Radeon X1800GTO2 512MB. For what I do, it'll last me for awhile. You may also be able to find similar good deals on higher-end 79xx cards if you're comfortable hunting for used gear; it seems a lot of "gotta-have-it" guys are scrambling to replace them with new Geforce 8800GTX/GTS cards.

I am still sporting a 6600GT and it's getting really annoying playing everything at 640. I'm going to drive out to bestbuy in Florence, KY and see if they actually have any left (1:02PM here).

Might pull the trigger, I have $50 just sitting around, going to have around $50 more in my paypal soon, and I could sell my old card for $50 I bet. Might be worth it.

Just got back from Best Buy and replaced my 6600GT with this one. Was about $160 with tax.

Now I can wait to upgrade for 2 or 3 years again. :D
 
Yep got one too... interesting that they had three and were nowhere to be seen on display they were up on the top shelf hidden behind a sign, I had to go out of my way to get one and they didn't have a sign or price on them but it rang up $149 just like the ad stated.. Gonna put it in the wife's computer
 
does anyone remember the web address for the site to do GPU Comparisons. I was wondering if this would be a worthwhile upgrade from an X800XT PE.

However, don't take the numbers too seriously unless they are within the same generation/family. However, they should still give you a good idea of the performance.
 
I've got 2 7900GS in SLI haven't benched yet but work very well toguether and overclock is decent 550 core and 1450 mem

you would definitely see a noticeable jump in performance, but your 3dmark scores aren't going to double or anything. it's a good upgrade considering you could sell your x800XT PE for ~$100 (probably a little more but i'm just approximating).. that's a cheap step up.

oh, and the 7900GS's apparently overclock pretty well..

the x800 xt pe goes for about 250 in the uk, if u wanna sell overseas.
 
Their "lifetime" warranty on some cards sucks... but if it is the 3 year one you should be fine.
 
I just picked one of these up for my son's new rig, he has been running a PNY 6800NU unlocked and overclocked for almost 2 years without any problems.

damn this really makes me have to think hard. In almost all aspects, it seems like the 7900gs would be the much smarter choice compared to the x1950pro, especially seeing how i've always been a nvda fan. Just have to determine if video in is worth the $50 to me :(

My Dell is a few months away from 2 yrs old. Anyway I'd rather pick up the eVGA for $165 AR on the Egg. The eVGA cooler is much better than the PNY as it covers the ram and I believe it's quiter as well.
 
I didn't bite on it, as I just didn't want to spend the money. With tax it's nearly as much as the eVGA one, but there's no rebate on this (it's instant) and I can have it in my hand.

I wonder if this price will be honored this entire week, or until they run out (no rainchecks).

Nothing's seriously wrong with PNY. Other vendors probably have slightly better support. PNY sells reference-design boards with reference-design coolers. The only reasons to buy another model of the same card is

a) They offer some high-zoot cooling solution, or one that's far quieter, at a price lower than the PNY card plus a Zalman or Arctic Cooling aftermarket cooler
b) You're such a waffler that you just might decide to use eVGA's trade-up program within 90 days of buying the card, so you buy from them.
c) You keep your hardware forever, so you really need the lifetime warranty as opposed to 1-3 years (I have yet to have a graphics card fail on me, that's going back to my first ATI VGA Wonder 512k, I usually own them for about 1.5-2 years at a time), or you overclock it like a mad beast, so you need the warranty of specific vendors' cards that don't void the warranty when you OC your card.
d)You want a vendor-OCed card, so you don't have to deal with attempting to overclock your vid-card, and are willing to pay the premium it costs over a stock card.

I had a PNY 6800NU AGP card for a bit. Didn't keep it long, but that's more because I was so disgusted by nVidia's b0rked PureVideo fiasco with the NV40/45-based cards, since I do more than just game. Sold it and went PCIe, but the buyer was very happy with it. It was fine for games, but I wanted hardware HD video decoding, and that card had serious issues with it (nVidia's fault, not PNY's).
 
Just picked one up, might get another before the weekend. Should be done putting the pc together by then, a big diff from my old 4200 im betting lol.
 
I gave in to my addiction and got one. The fan is mostly quiet, until it spools up. But even then it's not too noisy. Overall I'm satisfied with it.

Now if somebody could buy my 6800GS to help ease the pain... :D

It's better. Not day-and-night better, but better.

So instead of 2xAA 4xAF, you might run 4xAA 16xAF and still get better fps.
 
D'oh, I just picked up the eVGA 7900GS KO for $165 at ZZF last week. It finally replaced my aging 6600GT.

Well, with tax and shipping from Best Buy I guess it'd come out about the same anyway.
 
I was hired for a new job today, so I figured what the hell... Got it, it has Hynix memory and I have yet to overclock much. Hit 500MHz easy on core.

Ran 2hrs of 3dmark06 looped also, not a single problem arose.

My main driving force was the fact that I want to get a decent-sized LCD for christmas, and there's no way a 6600GT could drive it even for the games I play.

Got the second to last one out on the shelf.
 
According to GPU review this 7900GS is essentially a 7800GT on a die shrink with higher clock speeds. I was wondering why my friends Dell Inspiron 1705 with 7900GS (1920x1200 World of Warcraft) performed better than my desktop with 7800GT (1600x1200 World of Warcraft). The laptop is a 2 GHz core 2 duo with 2 gigs of memory, and my rig is a 3.4 GHz core 2 duo with 2 gigs of memory.

I want a new video card, and was considering an 8800GTS for $450 that my friend can get me from Comp USA, but for considerably cheaper I may pick up one of these and OC to hold me off a couple months until I start playing something besides WoW.
 
hmmm my best buy has three of them, now I'm tempted to attempt SLI on my Asus P5W DH Deluxe.
What would be the better performer? 7900 GTO overclocked for around $260? or 7900GS overclocked SLI for $40 more.
 
Well it's cheap but dont' expect good overclocking... mem on mine can't even hit 1400 stable and it's advertised as 1320 mhz although the chips are supposed to do 1400 (700x2). Having said that, at stock it is faster than a 7800GT that I tested on the same machine.
