well, i just got my 7800 gtx in the mail today, ordered from zipzoomfly for the bf2 edition, and was wondering what are normal temps for this card. i put it in and updated drivers and all and the idle temp is about 65C and was wondering if that is too high. i loaded up world of warcraft, upped the resolution and iq, then quit. loaded up hl2 and upped the resolution and iq and walked around a little enjoying the eye candy. everything seemed to be fine, but all of this happaned in about 30 minutes. when i came back out of the games, i checked the temps again and it was at 73C. i'm sure 20-30 mins of gaming won't put the card into full load, so i was wondering what are safe temps for the card.

oh, and btw, my computer now feels like a portable heater.

You can grab rivatuner from guru3d. It can monitor your temps while in 3d and put them on a nifty graph. Also, there's an option to view the temp as an osd.

As far as temps...crap...I don't remember when stock hsf was on! ...bah...flame away

Idle temps should be in the 40's. I got 2 BFG's, one idles at 42C and the other at 41C when put it sli it's 44C / 42C cause of their proximity.

If you check this thread you will see most people's stock idle is in the 40's as well.

Make sure you have enough airflow in your case.

that's not great temps but neither is it bad. 90+ is bad. mine never went over 55 at load btw.

With my system I get:

Idle temps:
GPU mid 50c
CPU mid 30C
MB low 40c

full load:
GPU high 70c
CPU high 40c
MB high 40c

really not to bad...

i threw it in a dell 9100. =T not the best computer to match the vid card with, but it works decently. i put bf2 on 1600x1200 with everything set to medium and some AA and it runs without a problem. wow at 1920x1200 with everything turned up and 1xmsaa simply because i can't see a single difference between 1x, 2x or 4x. hl2 i put it on 1920x1200 with everything on high, reflect world only and some AA and it runs great, occasionaly hiccup during big encounters.

i just finished the FEAR demo and i played it on 1600x1200 with everything on except soft shadow, maximum everything else and 2xAA and only had one or two hiccups, mainly the first time i did the slo-mo and near the end when things were kind of... creepy. for those who played, it lagged a little when i went down the ladder that freaks you out. you guys should know which one i'm talking about.

after an hour of FEAR, my card's temp was 69C. and i forgot to mention that i don't have air conditioning where i live currently (in the basement) and it's 80 degrees outside. it should be cooler down here, but it's humid, so i have a dehumidifier on and it creates insane amounts of heat. i'm guessing it's about 80 degrees down here too. :( i don't think it's too much of a problem at the temps the card is running. the weather will change and it'll be alot cooler down here. and in a few months, i'll be back home with an available air conditioner, so the ambient temps should be much lower. i can't really help airflow since it's a btx design. i'll take a look at it next week when i have time since i'm going to be out for the weekend.

Don't know about load temps ..but my XFX 7800GTX 450/1250 (Stock) idles at 43c'ish

what a load of crap  the thread you quote is also as worthless as your first statement. id explain why that is but i doubt you would grasp what im saying so im not going to waste my time.

Welcome to the forum sir. I find it amusing that your so intelligent that you can determine another members ability to grasp one of your yet to be seen disertations based on a single post of his.

I will say this, I am able to grasp that you are obviosly....... oh never mind your probably not capable of self realization

the word is dissertation and when i completed mine you were probably still in diapers. but thanks for posting, it made me chuckle.

@#$@#4, flibbin' flabbin' don't kill another thread!

How bout load temps guys? After using rivatuner, I found my load to be quite a bit higher than I thought at around 67. Still better than the 80 I was pushin' on my previous card, the 68GT. Looks like it's time to look into some more exciting cooling!!

Your arrrogance reminds me of the Doctor on MASH that arrives later in the series His name escapes me but he was an ok guy just a pompas ass becuase of his own insecurities. Like him you are probably a capable and intelligent human being that would have alot to offer his fellow man if he could only get over himself

Oh and unless your a 65 year old , your could not be more wrong on the diapers comment.

Kindest Regards,

Mike

My GTX idles ~49c and loads up to a max of 82c in the middle of the day. That is the overclocked temps as well (485/1300 via coolbits). While I am not worried about the temps, I am getting a Zalman 700-CU "just because" having a few degrees cooler temps is an investment in the safety of my 480 dollar video card. It is only 30 bucks online so....

well, now that the tempurature is lower outside and the air is cooler in my room, the card runs at about 55C, much better than the 65C it ran at when it was hot as hell in my room.

Please take the time. I'm more than interested in hearing your first hand experience...

You do also realize the temps in that thread are at the same clock don't you? Or perhaps you didn't know that...

70+ with a load and low 50's idle on an XFX 7800GTX at 500/1300. Should I check into other cooling then the stock fan? Not sure what good temps are really.

Oddly enough my temps jumped 2c with the new driver, anyone else?

My card, on air idled (after a few hours of normal 2D use) at 53 C in a room at 78F. With a waterblock installed, 42C. Then, when room temps drop to around 68F, the card idles at 38C. Water cooling does not necessarily improve idle temps, but it does substantially reduce load temps.

There are a number of variables that affect your idle temp:

First, the ambient temperature of the room. It seems most cards will idle around 25C to 30C over room temp. So, if it is 80 in your room (25C), then expect around a mid 50C idle. If you like AC, and keep the room at 68 F (18C), then you may see sub 40 C idle temps.

Second, the case the card is installed. If you have good circulation in and around your system, you will see idle temps close to the above. If not, you may see a few degree bump.

And third, if you are using SLI. The ASUS motherboards have the best SLI spacing, so those cards tend to return similar temps. Some motherboards are tighter, and restrict top card air flow (like my MSI).

Most people should get a mid 50 idle temp. But,if your case is open, and the system recently booted, your idle temp may be much lower. If your idle temps were in the mid 60's, then I might be concerned.

the room isn't tiny, but it's not large. i'd say the temps i have are 100% due to the btx design of the case. i don't even know how to improve airflow...

look at that poll. its based on what 33 users? thats a very small sample wouldnt you agree? in addition, those temperature results reflect different cards, different clock speeds, different cooling devices, different ambient temps, different cases, different locations of the computers, different times when the temps were taken. there is just too many variables in that poll to say that "idle temps should be in the 40's"
you are misleading people as well as causing people undo worry making such a lame statement like that. do you understand now? if not, read what i wrote again, maybe it will sink in this time.

BFG 7800 GTX SLI ASUS air cooling, really old chieftec case. idle 47-50C. full loads 65-67C.....comp in basement with ambient about 78F

Just as I thought you have no idea what you're talking about. You just decided it was time to troll and post a worthless inaccurate comment that added no value to the thread. Congrats!

All those cards regardless of overclocks run the same 2d speed. I'm sure you knew this  You should know what you're talking about before bashing someone's post...

So we have a sample of roughly 30 cards. 19 of those are stock. This is the biggest sample I could find. Yes they are from different manufacturers, it doesn't take a genius to read the chart. I pointed him to that thread because there are 19 stock cards listed. How is that not helpful? It gives you an idea of what people are getting. I also used the word "should" and even mentioned airflow in his case as a factor. This ain't a scientific survey. And if that's what you're looking for in a forum of people's opinion you're in the wrong place. How about you start listening to your own advice and read what I wrote...

You on the other hand made a useless comment without bringing anything to the thread.

when i hear the engineers from nvidia stating that the 7800 series cards "should" idle in the 40's i will believe it. since you dont work for nvidia, most likely arent an engineer, and seem to possess a rudimentary intellect at best, your opinion means nothing and your prior statement is utter crap.

I expected this response from you. Name calling and childish remarks. The ultimate defeat of a troll...

Since you seem to be an expert please explain to me why my statement is "utter crap"? Your statement certainly was and I proved it. You had no idea there were different 2d and 3d clocks.

I came up with 18 users personal experience and shared them with him. Like I mentioned if you're looking for scientific data you're in the wrong place. This is a FORUM. Where people share their experiences.

who is name calling? it seems you are the one using names, ie the troll comment. i guess anyone that doesnt agree with you or points out such an asinine comment as the one you wrote is a troll  regardless, this is off topic and frankly you bore me so i am done with you.

I gave my opinion which was my personal experience and valid. I pointed him to 17 other users personal experience which was also proven valid.

I'm fine with you not agreeing with my opinion. Calling it crap and worthless was uncalled for and unjustified. I sir am now done with you!

I found it amusing , I mean the paradox of you not giving a shit about what he says and yet giving a shit enough to respond.

Why does everyone have such low temps?? Mine idles at 60c-62c and it loads up to 90c after about 4 hours. Somthing is wrong here isn't it?

i currently idle around the 55C area and hit 75C in full load after like, 8 hours of WoW. but then again, i don't think wow works the gpu that much cuz it hits about 79C after running fear for an hour or two.

Well, 3 times already my card has done stange things. It all usually seems to happen when I take a screenshot. In Counter Strike, I press F5 and the graphics glitch up for a nice little second, then the monitor says no signal. So I turn off the computer, wait a bit, and turn it on and my keyboard doesn't get detected. At that point I turn off the PSU switch and wait about 10 minutes, turn it back on and everything is fine again. This has happened twice with CSS, and once with BF2, and all three times I took a screenshot.

Whats the deal here? Could it be my power supply? I see no reason why my keyboard would give out (its usb) all of a sudden. But I also think it can be overheating, but the BF2 one happened after about 20 minutes of play. The reason I think it overheats is because my case gets really really hot, but when my fan (not ceiling fan) is on, it never gets that hot, nor does it eff up when I take screens. This is weird.

i hate it when review sites conspire against me. however that being the case after having reviewed the links posted, i didnt see listed how those idle temps were taken. were those review cards in closed cases? what was the ambient temp? how long were the cards idling? 2 minutes? 2 hours? 2 days? if i ran a review site and had to review hardware i would be using a motherboard sitting on a work bench. i wouldnt be using a case that i would have to open up everytime i wanted to try something new. so once again i have proven my point.

For the reviews, always assume an open case in a well ventilated area and room temps. You will get a 5 to 9 C bump in most closed cases, especially air flow challenged cases. So, high 40's, mid 50's for idle would be expected in most "normal" air cooled cases.

What PSU? Sounds like as it warms up, it loses enough efficiency and goes below a threshold where it is starving your system for power.
