I have two e8400's..(dont' ask long story) the one I'm currently running is q745a741 batch # it was packed on 1/11/08. I can't get to 4GHZ with it.. but runs great at 3.8 orthos stable for 25 +hours when I shut it down. I have another processor that is unopened that I'm deciding if I want to sell unopened or if I want to install and see if I get the infamous 4.0ghz it is a q746a503 pack date 1/10/08. Is the price drop of an open processor worth the chance of 4 gig?

First of all, how do you figure out the pack date?

Anyway, I have the same Q745A741 batch code. My chip cannot break 3.96ghz SuperPi 32M stable on WATER. I tried 1.41v and 1.425v and I can't gain a notch. I think the chip hit a wall.

As for your other chip, see how that batch code does before you come to conclusions. Personally, I think it's worth trying another chip as long as you know for sure it will be better (again, look up the batch # to see other ppl's results). You don't really lose much # on used processors... at least if they're still the hot part to get. A used 6 series core2 is a different story, but the cheapest I've seen the wolfdales are $210 ish... and new they are not much more @ all.

So how do you check pack date?

Packing Date is on the box, lower right corner next to the version#.

Lol infamous? Yeah, lotta variation is going on - so I'd give it a shot. I think I had a Q743 before...that was a horrible chip (1.36vcore and still stuck @ 3.96Ghz). It was a 12/20/2007 pack date.

i've tried up to 1.425v on my Q745 and still can't break 3.96ghz on WATER.

Haha aren't you also on XS? I think I saw your post in the e8400 thread.

Yes, sir... ocforums.com, xtremesystems.org, anandtech forums, extremeoverclocking.com forums... those are the main ones I'm on. :)
