7.1 vs 5.1

Anyone that has actually USED them:

How does 7.1 compare to 5.1, for games? I have a 7.1 now, but I want to upgrade quality. A 7.1 will cost me $250+ more than 5.1.
 
My receiver can take a 6.1 signal and extrapolate it into 7.1, which is what I was using for awhile... didn't notice any big difference over 5.1. Definitely wouldn't spend $250 for the extra two channels/speakers.
 
Hmm, you get to hear if something is beside of behind you?

All I know is that I played in 2.1 for a week when I was between selling and buying speakers and it sucked because I depended on the surround to key me in to peoples' positions. So as long as you put your speakers in good positions (usually according to a diagram) then more should be better.

Also, it depends on what you're talking about here. Most console games only do 5.1 sound, some PS3 games do 7.1 sound but not many. If we're talking about PC games then most are going to have 7.1 sound provided you've properly configured your OS and have the game set properly (if necessary).

Don't be an ass to people that help you out when YOU'RE the one asking for advice. Oneiros has given you better feedback than anybody else so far and you thank him by insulting him. :rolleyes:

Do you realize that the difference between a 6.1 and 7.1 is just lack of a stereo rear channel? 5.1 doesn't have a rear channel at all, so Oneiros comment is actually quite useful. Not as useful as somebody with a 7.1 setup, but I don't see anybody with a better answer so far.

Heh. I can hear them behind me. With 2 speakers. Really need to do a post on this setup. Pretty different approach. Lazy. Don't want to clean up my room to take pics. Or move the hundred pound amps.

5.1 is fine btw. 7.1 is just a bit more accurate directionally.
 
7.1 is pretty much 5.1 for larger rooms. Youll only see the benifits in a largish room, where the channels have more seperation. So for a large sized roo, go 7.1, otherside stick with 5.1.

Can't wait for 2020 and 22.2 :D
