69XX Series Crossfire + Eyefinity

In an effort not to Highjack Vega's thread i figured i would create a new one.

My question is how are you guys liking your 6950/70 Crossfire + Eyefinity setups. and are you seeing the screen tearing issues that have been discussed in Vega's thread.

I have my 3xHP ZR24w's running off of my 5970 for the moment and was planning on grabbing 2x 3gb 580's but im not sure i can justify the cost especially considering i will most likely upgrade as soon as the next generation comes out. 2x 6970's are slightly more expensive than a single 3gb 580 and i think will provide a good upgrade from my 5970. However i dont want to upgrade from a stable 40fps to a screan tearing stuttering 60fps.

Two 580s are barely 50% faster than your 5970, that's not a great upgrade considering you're going from a 290W card to two 320W cards and paying $1200 for the privilege. If you don't get stuttering with one 5970, you definitely won't get it with two 6970s. The 6900s work much better in crossfire than the 5970 did.

I love my setup. I don't find screen tearing noticable in games (it does happen on my one DP monitor), but if i have a webpage or video on that screen i can see it. I really have to be looking only at that screen though to notice it.

^ Pretty much same for me as well adn my eyefinity setup. Love my setup and I run ZR24W's as well, very noticeable performance gain coming from 5850's crossfired to my 6950's. I do sometimes notice some screen tearing, but for me it does not seem to be very prevalent at all and I notice no stuttering.

Yah thats what got me thinking about the 6970's. After selling my card i can grab two of them for about 400$. Just don't want to run into problems.

The tearing seems to happen only when you drag windows around the windows desktop. This happens on all 3 (2 displayports to dual link dvi and dual link dvi)I don't see any tearing what so ever in games. Well that could be because I have 120hz monitors.

Anyhow, I believe it's a issue with the drivers and only happening on the desktop. I don't blame display port or the adapters because it happens on all 3 screens even the native dual link dvi port.

Thank god I'm not dealing with that then. Tearing in games would be a deal breaker. I'd quickly go back to nvidia if that was happening here.

I was using Eyefinity with 3x Samsung 226BW, no tearing issue both in game and desktop... the clock is lock on 3D, not so sure if that helps...

The game and/or engine that the OP mostly plays is also an important factor. For instance, I just upgraded from a 5970 to two 580's and saw a massive boost in speed, working vsync and overall gameplay experience in BFBC2 and that's the game I play. According to Kyle's review 580SLI is 40% faster than 6970 Crossfire in that game.

The fact that games sit at a nice consistent 60fps with vsync and don't have any tearing at all on the nvidia solution is also worth a lot to me. I was particularly annoyed by my 5970's awful crossfire eyefinity experience. It felt like crap, even when fraps was displaying framerates well above 60.

For instance, I just upgraded from a 5970 to two 580's and saw a massive boost in speed, working vsync and overall gameplay experience in BFBC2 and that's the game I play. I Really play just about anything. I mainly play FPS Games like BC2 or COD, CSS, TF2, L4D... ect. However i also play flight sims i.e Lomac, Blackshark, IL-2 and also COH, Arma 2, just about anything, but mainly FPS games.

But yah i know what your talking about my 5970 plays pretty good, but when i look at my FPS and it says 45 sometimes it feels more like 25 it definitely isn't buttery smooth like 1 24".

So you guys aren't seeing the tearing in games? Is it a clock speed problem? the 2D clocks not able to run 3 screens well?

I haven't experienced much tearing as well...I am much happier w/ CF scaling from the 5970 to the 6xxx series

just wish that the CF bridge limitation issue didn't limit me to just 2x6xxx series gpu's

So you went from a 5970 to 2x6970's?

The bridge limitation does suck, The way AMD prices their cards 3 6970s would compete with 2 580's.. but that's a pointless comparison when the third card completely breaks your setup.

a 3rd or 4th card should be ok w/ 1920x1200 x 3, I believe vega's tests showed that anything above that would be a no go



yea I had a 5970 running a single 30" for a while, but downgraded to a single 5850 due to driver frustration and performance issues that I ran into.

but the scaling for the 6xxx CF has been improved dramatically

Well hurdur, that's TWO 580s, not one. Upgrade from one $500 card to two $500 cards and I wonder what'll happen? Hardly a fair comparison.
