6970 Thermal pads/paste

Just got some AS5 in the mail and was wondering if it would be worth putting on my 6970s and if they have thermal pads on them that I would have to replace if I took the cooling solution off the card?
 
Whether AS5 is worth it on a new card is negligible. It may lower the temps a bit but usually not much at first in my opinion. The pads for the memory and VRMs doesn't need to be replaced. They are basically meant to be lifetime. You just reuse them. The only thing that you usually change once in a while is the thermal paste.

Maybe. I think thermal paste on GPU's isn't as crappy as it used to be. I remember my old HD 2900PRO after it got some new thermal paste(It was AS5 I think actually) it lowered the temps by almost 15 degrees Celsius!

If your temps bother you, do it. If your temps are fine then just keep it how it is.

While I don't own a 6970. I did replace the TIM for my 5970. It did lower it's maximum load temperatures by 3-5 degrees. I used Arctic cooling MX-3.

Just alittle warning about arctiv silver 5. Just throwing this disclaimer in just incase :)

While much safer than electrically conductive silver and copper greases, Arctic Silver 5 should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. While it is not electrically conductive, the compound is very slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridges two close-proximity electrical paths
 
hehe, ya, I thoroughly read the instructions for the stuff when I put it on my CPU...still working on curing time but under partial load temps are still in the mid 30s where-as it was hitting low 40s before so I can't complain.
