6970 Screen Tearing

I just upgraded from 2 9600GT's to a 6970 (my first AMD/ATI card).
I can turn all my settings up, but i'm getting pretty bad screen tearing if I don't enable vsync. I've never had to use vsync before is this an AMD issue or a driver issue that will hopefully get fixed down the road?

It kinda sucks to have this awesome card and then have to throttle it back to 60 fps.

Games I've tested so far are:
BFBC2
FONV
Metro 2033

All have tearing. Vsync fixes tearing in BFBC2 & FONV. I'm not able to enable vsync in Metro 2033.

Any help would be much appreciated.

It just means that your new card is much more powerful than your old setup and is therefore pumping out a lot more frames than before.

Turn on vsync. Sorted.

You can enable Triple Buffering as well (probably need to use a 3rd party app such as ATi Tray Tools) which will fix any sudden drops in frame-rate if it drops below 60, some people say it brings input-lag but I've never noticed it personally.

Is this true? What's the point of being able to push 100fps if you get this horrible tearing effect and need to vsync everything?

Is this what everybody does? or do they put up with the screen tearing (mines pretty bad)?
or does this not happen for everybody?

LCD refresh rate are 60hz anyway, unless you buy a real 120hz LCD Monitor. Other than that 40 of those 100 frame are not showing and causing VSYCH issue. This can happen 2 times. When you pass 60hz (60fps) or when you pass below 30 fps (for too long)..

Most monitors refresh at 60 frames per second. If your new video card is pushing 100, its not going to match up. Either adjust your settings so your video card can push around 120fps, turn on vsync, or drop your settings to get your frames around 60.
 
Turn on vsync and triple buffering. Problem solved!

Why have I never seen this before?
In BC2 with my old setup I was at around 50-60 fps, I didn't notice screen tearing. I'm not saying that it didn't happen sometimes just rarely enough that I didn't notice.

With my new 6970 I'm at much higher settings, but still at around 50-60 fps and I get pretty bad screen tearing with every movement(if it was only occasional I could live with it). Why is this.

I just want to make sure it's not the card and I don't need to RMA it or go back to nvidia cards.

Why is this issue not covered in video card or game reviews. Until recently haven't all LCD screens been 60hz?

So if this is normal, which seems to be what you guys are saying, then switching cards nor better drivers are going to help?

Again not trying to dispute what your saying, just trying to make sure that I didn't blow 380 bucks.

I highly doubt your fps is still 50-60 with a 6970 on BC2... it just impossible..
 
I get a permanent single screen tear with dual 6970 in Eyefinity with VSync ON! This stinks.

It does look a little low comparing various reviews. A quick check at my res (1680x1050) shows anywhere from 70 to 116 fps avg.. I think most reviews use single player for benchmarking, I'm talking MP. Also even though they say settings are on High I don't know if they have HBAO on or off, most reviews don't specifically say.
Also I'm using PlayClaw (not FRAPS) and just observing the fps while playing not recording. Don't know if it is as accurate as FRAPS. I use it because of the ability to see whose talking in TS.

The issue is not with the card. As everyone in here is saying it is just beefer. And for you to only be getting 50 to 60 fps in BC2 is impossible.

I have a single 6970 and get anywhere from 80 to 100+.

To summerize there is no issue. Yes you are seeing tearing. Just turn on Vsync. I do not understand why you are doubting everything that is being said. If your card has to much horsepower this will happen. Thus the Vsync option.
 
Put very simply, if your screen is 60hz it refreshes 60 times a second. If your card produces more than 60 frames per second you will see tearing.

Everyone that has enough power to push 60+ fps uses vsync.

Also TV and film are only around 25 fps so your not missing anything not been able to see 60+ fps ;P
 
The tearing is a fault in the monitor, not the video card. Simply put, the video card is pushing too many FPS for your monitor(s) to handle. Turn up the quality as high as it will go, if needed turn on vsync and the problem is solved, unless you want to buy a monitor(s) that can handle 120MHz or faster.
 
It's like that for everyone. Use Vsync + triple buffering, or deal with the tearing. You want vsync off in most fps games anyway. I used to have a 100hertz crt, and went to a 60hz LCD. Big difference.

Get a 120hz monitor.
 
I got a 120Hz monitor to get around these issues. I love the clarity of having VSync on but hate tearing. Now I have the best of both worlds.

Glad it is working for ya now. Maybe a 120Hz monitor would be good to invest in.
 
Just remember anything over 60 fps with all the goodies turned on is just for epeen anyway (not that it makes it any less fun)
