Alright, so I went and bought an Apple passive miniDP->DVI converter, got it all hooked up and now the miniDP monitor will not turn on with the other two monitors on. I can see it in CCC and when I go to extend or duplicate the monitor, it tells me that I have to disable one of the other monitors to enable the DP monitor. If I do that, it turns on and runs fine but CCC will not let me run all 3 monitors at once. Is there something im missing as far as hooking up 3 monitors goes? Does the DP port now share a clock with one of the DVI ports or somethin? I dont think its the adapter itself otherwise, why would it let me turn it on?

That mini-DP may need to be powered?

I'm not certain, but in the 5870s I had, you needed a powered adapter if you were trying to run three monitors from the GPU to DVI inputs.

Passive mini DP to DVI does not work in a tri monitor situation as far as I have heard.
Pretty sure you need an active adapter or a native DP monitor.

what about minidp to DP adapter into a DP to DVI adapter??

Ive got an active DP to DVI adapter that i used on my 5870s as well....just doesnt help with the new cards...

You could try mini DP to DP and then powered DP to DVI, but I bet it won't work.

You need a native DP monitor it sounds like.

I had 5870 E6 models and all the outputs on the card were miniDP to either DP,DVI or HDMI. But I was still bound by the rule that 1 of the 3 had to be going to a native DP monitor.

USMCGrunt as per the official Eyefinity FAQ, http://www.amd.com/US/PRODUCTS/TECHN...ages/faqs.aspx, you threw money away on that passive adapter:

...Why do you need DisplayPort?

AMD Eyefinity technology leverages DisplayPort and its ability to easily scale to drive multiple displays from a single clock source.

What's the difference between active DisplayPort dongles and passive DisplayPort dongles?

Passive dongles use the DisplayPort connection to receive non-DP signaling from the connector and they 'passively' adjust the signals to be compliant with the connected monitor. Passive dongles are considered legacy connections, not DisplayPort connections, therefore they do not fulfill the DisplayPort connection requirement mentioned previously and cannot be used to enable 3 or more displays. They do, however, offer an affordable solution to adapt legacy displays to DisplayPort connections.

Active dongles use true DisplayPort signaling to 'actively' translate and re-transmit the signals as the required outputs. Because they use the true DisplayPort signaling, they are considered a DisplayPort connection and meet the requirements to enable 3 or more displays.

DisplayPort to DL-DVI dongles require an external power supply which is usually through a separate USB connection (the USB connection must meet the USB 'high power' specification).

Where can I purchase the various active and passive DisplayPort dongles and mini to standard DisplayPort adaptors and how much do they cost?

With our AMD Eyefinity validation program, we have been able to validate and list a number of business partners currently shipping adaptors. This list will continue to be updated. Please see www.amd.com/eyefinity for more information.

How many non-DisplayPort monitors can I use with an AMD Eyefinity technology-enabled graphics card?

You can connect up to two non-DisplayPort monitors at one time to an AMD Eyefinity technology-enabled graphics card using non-DisplayPort connections or passive DisplayPort dongles. To enable and drive 3 or more non-DisplayPort monitors at one time, the additional non-DisplayPort monitors must be connected with an active DisplayPort dongle.

You simply MUST have an active DP port for all monitors beyond the first two. There is no getting around this.

However, I do have the answer to your question "what about minidp to DP adapter into a DP to DVI adapter?"

Yang88she confirms that he is using that kind of setup for his system in this thread:

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1569678

Bear in mind though, the DP to DVI adapter he is using is an ACTIVE adapter. As stated above there is no choice in this. You must always have some form of active DP support for all monitors after the 2nd one.

BTW, all your questions in this thread so far have been answered (by me and yang88she) in other threads that were on the first page of this forum at the time you started this thread.

Mini DP to DP is a straight pass through. No different than a mini USB to standard USB adapter. It should work fine with an active DP to DVI adapter.

Thank you everyone, I was just really not wanting to buy another adapter....wish AMD would have stuck with a standard DP instead of mini, makes everyone out that have to go and buy ANOTHER adapter...

Though I am curious, why is it that I can run the monitor using a passive adapter just not all 3 at once?

I think the reason they use mini ports is a space issue.
You simply can't squeeze 6 regular plugs and adapters on the back of the GPU.

My 5870 E6 models had 6 total mini ports for just that issue.

I can't answer that second question, but I think it all has to do with signal transfer.

Just thought I would pop in since I was mentioned in an above post ;)

I assume you bought a xfx 6970 bc that was the only maker that I saw, that didn't include a mini displayport to displayport adapter...that's why I went sapphire this time as I didn't want to purchase an additional active adapter

Best of luck op, the links in the above posts can take u to newegg where u can find a powercolor active display mini to dvi converter

That's another point of confusion, the newegg powercolor adapters don't look like they are active adapters since there is no additional power draw cable aka USB. I've seen many labeled as active adapters that don't have this but assumed it was incorrect. Can active minidp adapters pull the necessary voltage from the minidp port itself unlike standard dp??

Yes it. Is active, the extra usb power source us for powering resolutions up to 2560x1600..and those adapters are close to $75+.

That powercolor will go up to 1920x1200

Is that single monitor resolution or total? If it's total, I don't see it working out very well on eyefinity with resolutions at 5760x1200 and higher.

And yes, the USB powered ones are expensive, I forked over the money last night for the accel one from amazon, minidp to dvi. Appears to be the same as the dp to dvi so it should solve my issues.

Thanks again for the help guys, though I should have known better having done this with the 5xxx series.

The powercolor model is a single link DVI model, and as such, only needs one TDMS driver, and is far more power efficient vs dual link models. DP has a small amount of power feed via it's specifications.

Single link DVI is limited to 1920x1200.

Saw that one but thought it was passive so I went with this one...guess if I ever get bigger monitors I'm covered...http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d.html/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/176-8087729-4088413?a=B0030XMREG

Its worth mentioning that the older dual-link adapters have a history of issues such as intermittent dropping of signal. The newer active single-link adapters have had no issues since being released. So if the one you bought gives you problems, try returning it and getting one of the active single-link adapters.

Ya, I remembering reading about all that, anyway to tell if this is one of the "older" ones?

heres the cheapest active adapter you can find online shipped http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004071ZXA/ref=oss_product i own this as well and it works fine

Does it work fine with the 69xx series or older series? My passive POS DP to VGA adapter worked fine with my 5870 but it does not with the 69xx series. The monitor goes blank as soon as EF is enabled. I would really like the cheaper non-USB powered one to work but I would like confirmation before ordering. Note a friend in the same situation also tried a so-called active Apple miniDP to DVI; and it doesn't work either.

The problem is I have an adapter here that works on my old 5870 in EF, works single screen on the 69xx series but does NOT work with 69xx series and EF... So just trying to make sure. The DP has changed in the latest series in some way

Your 5870 adapter is a DP to VGA though isn't it? From what I can tell 69xx cards and analog connections are a no go.

Yeah I think you are right, pity. Can only get the adapters from the US, not even available here in NZ> Pulled the trigger on that Amazon one, hope like hell it works... with the amount I have spent on bloody EF adapters I reckon I could have got a DP monitor! :p

I feel ya dude....oh and as it turns out the active minidp->DVI that I bought off Amazon works just fine..the first couple hours of usage where it was blinking out must have been some sort of glitch cause its been running strong since with no issues.

do they sell any of these in stores or am i fucked while I wait for shipping till monday?
