6970 Compatibility Question

I have had a EVGA Nforce 750i SLI FTW and a GTX275 for 2-3 years. I am looking to move to a 6970 for Eyefinity here soon. Although I know that CF will not work (and I am not ready for that money wise), would just adding a 6970 to the MB work or do you need a specific MB for an AMD card?
 
single gpu should work.

im not sure about single pcb with two gpu's though.
 
You'll be fine. Just get the card... actually as a matter of fact I have a XFX 6970 w/ Double lifetime warranty left on it for sale :)

Both work. The single PCB/dual GPU cards from AMD have an onboard PLX mux chip that handles the CF data/config, and the drivers take it from there on out, so even on a board that refuses to support CF, it will work.
 
Sweet!! I've been reading up on Eyefinity and look to take the plunged and then thought my mb may stop the whole thing. Thanks for the offer Jim but instead of laying down the cash for a card I am thinking about leasing it this time. They give free upgrades so getting a 6970 now does not mean I cannot upgrade to get the 7000 series when it comes out. As you can see with my GTX275 it ills me to buy other card after paying so much the first time. The 6970 will cost about $36 a month and if I wait long enough maybe the 6990 will come down from $74 if they have a dual GPU version of the 7000. One can hope. Thanks for the info.
 
I'm no fan of running radeons off an nforce chipset, but it does work (that said, I'm not a fan of doing anything with nforce chipsets other than throwing them away :p). You theoretically shouldn't have any issues. Really though if you want to crossfire latterly, ditch the 750i and use the opportunity to get a faster CPU. LGA775 is starting to get a bit long in the tooth now for cutting edge systems.
 
I completely agree. I have had my Q9550 and GTX275 for about three years and have kept them as they still run all the games at 1920x1200. Ya keeping the nforce board is not best case but if it works then cool. Eventually I will upgrade everything and move to an i7.
