6950 worst card ever?

Okay, I have had this card for a little over a week. Bought it local from Microcenter and it is an XFX brand. I've had nothing but trouble with it from the first day. I get "display adaptor stopped working and has recovered" several times a day. BSOD or restarts also. Before this I had a 6870 and had zero trouble!! My feeling is that this is a driver issue. I am on the 10.12a hotfix driver that is the only one that works with this card...please correct me if I am wrong.

I plan to take the card back and get a 570 or go back to the 6870 unless you guys suggest otherswise...thanks
 
I had some similar issues upgrading from my 5870 to 6950's

Windows would freak out, half the programs still saw the card as a 5800 series


Ended up just reformatting and reinstalling Windows, all's good now.
 
Is the error for the monitor plugged into the display port slot on the card. Are you running eyefinity when this happens? Ocing the card?

I found that when I ran into issues with my 6970 reinstalling CCC works out. Still having random issues though.
 
DriverSweep is all I can recommend. But usually I just reformat everytime I get a major hardware component.
 
any time you swap out a card for a different one you should ALWAYS do a driversweep... doesn't matter if it is still a NV or ATI swap... I did a driversweep when I flashed my BIOS on my cards even.

Starting out clean will never hurt. if nothing else reinstall Windows.
 
I upgraded from an XFX 4850 to an XFX 6950 with one issue, none of the monitoring software I used in the past works.
I uninstalled 10.10 I had used with the XFX 4850s, used DriverCleaner.net to make sure the driver was fully uninstalled then used the CD that came with the 6950.
You (the OP) may want to consider using a driver cleanup utility, or two.

You have to clean out every driver/folder associated with AMD/Nvidia. Make sure you're using the newest version of Driver Sweeper, it finds more files than the earlier versions.
Also uninstall unused audio driver software. The only Nvidia file I kept was the Physx driver.
 
Sounds like you need a clean out your old drivers to me,its pretty much a given with new hardware..

I had that same issue nearly every day a while back. I had upgraded from a X800XL to the 8800GT, and was running Vista x64. It started the day I installed the card. I kept hoping a driver update would come along and fix it, but it didn't go away until I upgraded to Windows 7.
 
this is the worst card I can remember using. Games crash, windows crashes just using regular apps. I did a format and reinstall windows 7 about one month ago. Only card ever on this build was the 6870. I uninstalled and did use driver cleaner. Here is one odd thing...from the ati site, if you choose this card with my os you get the vanillia 10.12 driver which will not recognize my card. I did try to install that one, used driver cleaner and then went to the 10.12a.

Also I have not tried to flash this card to the 6970. Still very unhappy trying to decide what to do...thanks

Clearly you cannot be so daft as to think that all or anywhere near all 69XX users are experiencing this issue...or it would be news on every hardware website.

RMA it or return it.
 
I'm an AMD skeptic and the 6950 has been a joy to use. The 6870 when it was released was a horrible card.
The 10.10 drivers are horrendous, it took them five hotfixes to get it right and then another five with the 10.11 drivers.
Could have been a defective card so I returned it.

I don't torture myself with hardware either. I buy from retailers with good return policies so if something goes wrong and I can't fix it, I return the part. Done.
Really no need to create a thread about it.

Not every gadget that you buy will be perfect or match everyone's experiences out there. There are hundreds of people who never post on a forum or post a problem because from purchase to install it is seamless.

I think that if you are really that displease def RMA it. Though I am having issues with my current eyefinity setup it is not the card itself nor the lineup of cards.

I bought a 570 last month and had a similarly bad experience with it. I guess that makes the 570 the worst card ever!

In all seriousness, it looks like the card is defective. Welcome to my life.
 
Second topic where the OP is obviously having hardware issues but insists it's the drivers because there's no way it could be anything else! AMD sure does make horrible drivers, am I right guys???

I got two 6970s and this is what you gotta do.
First, uninstall your current driver. Second run driver sweeper. Third, use windows explorer and delete every amd & ati directory. Four, reboot. Five, run driver sweeper again. And MOST IMPORTANTLY SIX, go to run program and type in regedit. In regedit you need to find and delete every amd & ati folder, the folders are found under the software file sections..make sure you find all of them and thouroughly search thru all of the folders because if you dont get them all you will have errors with your new driver install. Seven, install hotfix 12a

Why even mess with it. If you have only had it for a week from a B&M, then take it back and exchange it.

+1 Best solution. I did this a week ago with my GTX 480 so I guess that's the reason why my 6950 installation went smoothly.
If you're still having issues then return the card.

lilb3119, regarding those adapters, I purchased the "correct" one when I bought my 5870, I have had just as many, if not more issues than you. And when I switched to a 5850, same thing. I am unsure as to what is the problem, but I am bound to think it is not the adapters. My cards are also XFX. I blame drivers anyway. There is an issue with waking up monitors and it annoys the crap out of me.
 
Didn't mean to be misleading with the title...but my bad. This is the worst card/driver that I've used maybe ever. May do a clean install tonight and try that out. Thanks for the reply's everyone...

If not, exchange the card. I haven't seen any real complaints with the 6900 series cards yet, certainly nothing like the GSOD issue that was present on the 5800 series for a while.

I will say the 6970 is an awesome card. I ran into a few issues but that is because of my eyefinity setup, but other than that amazing card. Thinking of going crossfire to.

Everyone has different setups, programs running, OS stuff...
If someone's board needs a bios update to function with a new card, that's not PEBKAC, but might seem that way.

Also a dead/defective card isn't anyone's fault, either.
 
I just bought a 6950; although I've had issues with ATI's drivers over the years, it's been lessened by the fact I play maybe 1 or 2 new games a year. I'd hate to experience what you've went through OP, it wouldn't take me long to just send it back for a different card.

I had issues with using driversweeper with the 10.12 driver. I had it with my 5770's but I had to reinstall it in order to put the crossfire 6950's in. Driversweeper wasnt catching everything. I used it as well as CCleaner's registry cleaner and manually uninstalling all amd ati stuff. Was alot more work than using driver sweeper to wipe the old driver and installing the new one. Glad to see Im not the only one with issues!

I'd exchange it for another and give that a try. It could be a software issue as well. Like some of the others said, reformatting may help. Drivers aren't perfect from either side. ;)
