Hey guys,

I'm having some problems with my new Sapphire 6870. I just got it today and I removed CCC and all ATI drivers through it's uninstall and reinstalled the 11.11 CCC with the 6800 series drivers included. I was previously running a 4870. As soon as I log into windows a few seconds later it will just bsod when I have any of the CCC packages installed. I tried 11.11, 11.11a, and 11.10 but I get the same result every time. I was wondering if anyone knew what I was doing wrong or perhaps a fix action. I tried searching a bit for a fix action but I haven't found anything that has helped.

I'm able to get back into windows by going through safe mode and uninstalling the display adapter driver through system/device manager then rebooting into windows normal mode. So I'm pretty certain it's the display driver that is causing the problems.

If anyone has any information that would help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

Can you post the error? (turn off auto restart in the control panel/system/advanced system settings/startup options)

Have you un-overclocked everything in your system?

Happens if my processor is overclocked or not.

I'm not sure if this is the error you're looking for, this is what it spits back to me after I reboot.

I think I should run Driver Sweeper but I can't find a download link. It does say the correct driver when I look up the properties on it. I'm really not sure what to do, I never had a problem like this before. Maybe it's time for a fresh format.

Same issue after running Driver Sweeper. I'm at a loss at this point. Short of reformatting, I'm not sure what else could be causing this. I'm pretty sure my PSU can handle it, it's a 620HX corsair. It ran my 4870 perfectly fine and they have just about the same power requirements.

I dunno, if it were me, I would drop Windows 7 on a spare hard disk and just see if your OS install is bad or not.

If it still doesn't work with a fresh install... then perhaps to rule out anything else related to your system, I would try it in another system if you could perhaps talk a friend into helping you out.

Yeah I'm going to put it in my roommate's computer, she has a 6850 now so we'll see what happens when I put this 6870 in there. It just really seems like a driver issue of some sort. Right when windows loads CCC it will bsod. I wonder if perhaps my old settings for my 4870 are being saved somewhere on my computer and it's trying to load those settings with my 6870 installed and that is causing the problems.

I had a video card that I removed the water block from to put the air cooler back on. When I was prying the ramsinks off that I put on it, I broke off a little coil. That card would run windows all day long but as soon as I tried anything 3d it would lock up. So, I personally wouldn't rule out a hardware problem existing that does not manifest itself until the driver is loaded.

I'm back on my 4870 again. I just don't have time to mess with it at the moment, too much studying to do :(. I was hoping to just be able to swap the two cards and put the latest drivers in but unfortunately that will not be the case this time. I'll update this thread as I learn more from what is going on, maybe someone else will still have some suggestions.

Well good news. I reformatted my other hard drive and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 on it. I did end up putting the 6870 in my roommate's computer, swapped her 6850 out and it installed and worked just fine in her computer. So I went ahead with a reformat since I ruled the card out for being bad. I was pretty certain it was some conflict with the driver, but I'm somewhat glad I resolved the problem. I'm not sure exactly what was going on, since I did driver sweeper and uninstalled all the ATI drivers through catalyst uninstaller. I'm going to guess there was some CCC profile that was really messing with the 6870 driver and that's what was happening, but I could not find it anywhere and just went with the format.

I'm putting it through some furmark stress testing and it's holding up just fine so far.

Thanks again for those that tried helping me. Thanks Met-AL.
