Hey All,

Little confused on the 6850/6870 can someone please clarify/verify for me?

The 6850 has 2 dvi, 1 hdmi, and 1 dp. The 2 dvi and 1 hdmi share one channel so you can only use two of those three ports at once AND the dp port so you can only run 3 monitors simultaneously.

If you do plug in 3 monitors, will Win7 recognize each one as a separate monitor? Does it require any special setup to run the three of them as extended off your primary monitor?

Also, DP to DVI adapters, do I have to buy those expensive ones or can I just use one of those Apple dvi to dp adapters that are like 10 bucks on amazon?

Are there any cards that can run 4 monitors right now?

To use all of them in windows 7 just set them up using CCC as a eyefinity setup. As for a card that can run 4 monitors, IRRC the 3870x2 and 4870x2 supported 4 monitors.

Does it have to be eyefinity? in CCC?

Can I just just use Win7's native display properties?

Any differences between the two?

I'm looking for more recent cards- I saw that the 6870 and 69xx series 2 dvi, 1 hdmi, 2 dp.

If the monitors have DP then you don't need any adapters. If they do not then the adapter that you want is http://www.amazon.com/Accell-B087B-006B-DisplayPort-Single-Link-Certified/dp/B004071ZXA/ for mDP or http://www.amazon.com/Accell-B087B-005B-DisplayPort-Single-Link-Certified/dp/B004071ZX0 for DP. Those will work up to 1920x1200. If you run a 2560 resolution then you have to use the expensive adapters.

The 6900 series cards each have two DP so you could use them for four displays. The 5000 series cards have some Eyefinity5 and Eyefinity6 edition cards but if your monitors do not have DP then you would need a lot of adapters to use them.

Any of the cards can run extended displays. You do not have to span them in Eyefinity.

Passive DP adapters tap in to an existing signal. The card can reroute a signal to that port but there are only two so this isn't going to help what you want to do.

Active DP adapters actively convert the signal so the card sees it as a DP monitor and the adapter converts the signal to DVI, in a nutshell.
