680i temp questions

after gaming i touch my 680i chipset and hs and its pretty damn hot. almost as hot as my 8800GTS. is this normal? can a mobo be oced? is there any tool i can use to check my temps other then ntune? even teh chipset itself is pretty hot. i also have the chipset fan installed but its still hot.
 
You already used the best tool, your finger, if you cant put a finger on it and count to 5 without taking it off, its too hot, get some case airflow going and see about replacing the thermal paste that was applied under the chipset heatsink with Artic sliver

oh and update your sig with your motherboard and combine some stuff on the same lines please it eats up screen space.

without the motherboard manuf and model I cant find a pic so I can make a better recomendation. A forum search of "680i NB cooler" would probally be a good thing.
 
What sort of temp reductions would you be looking at if you were to scrape away the factory stuff and replace it with AS5?

Also - are there any special ways you should wipe away the factory goop so that there aren't residual microscopic bits which have an effect on your AS5?

As my sig says, I'm not using the EVGA board but I'm using the same chipset (Striker). I am just wondering whether taking out the motherboard and servicing it is worth it for me.

Depends...is your NB or SB running real hot?
Unless you're upping your voltages, you most likely won't need to worry about it ;)

I'm running the Striker so yeah - everything is hot. :p

Seriously though, the NB does get fairly hot. I've never really touched the NB in any of my other computers so I don't have anything to compare it to. I haven't hooked up the temp sensor to it just yet as I haven't had time, but it does get very hot to touch. I WAS running 4GB of RAM so I had to up the voltage on my NB for a short time and it felt very hot, especially after playing games etc.. I've been waiting on a BIOS update from Asus to be able to run my 4GB in a stable manner. That BIOS update came out yesterday (...and from all accounts fixes the RAM problem) so I'm going to be working on installing that other 2GB I left out. Also want to start pushing my FSB and overclocking that way soon (instead of upping my multiplier) so I would most likely be pushing more voltage through my NB.

My SB is running two 8800GTXs and seems to have a fair amount of voltage being pumped through it as well.
 
MCP is the south bridge on reference 680i motherboards. There is no way to monitor the north bridge temps, yet.
