6800GS or x800PRO ???

I have recently been looking for a PCI-E video card with 256MB around the $200 price range. I stumbled upon these two video cards. I have read up on the reviews of these two products but cant seem to come to a conclusion of which card to buy.

X800Pro

OR

6800GS

OR

any other suggestions?

thanks, RB

I'd vote for the 6800gs because overclocked it should perform between a 6800gt-ultra...which is significantly faster than the x800 pro.

well, i dont plan on overclocking. just using it stock.
You should overclock it. Nvidia's drivers have a built-in overclocking tab you need to unlock with a little utility called Coolbits. They even have a nice "Detect Optimal Settings" button that automatically overclocks.

You can literally get a 20-30% performance boost out of your card by hitting that one button, and that's not exactly insignificant.

If you care enough to worry about the speed of the x800 vs the 6800GS, you should care enough to install Coolbits and have the 6800GS match a stock 7800GT.

I'd get the GS (I actually am waiting on mine to arrive) because its basically a GT, from what everyone around here says..

Well, it has 4 less pipes but is clocked higher, so it performs ~GT.

rofl match a stock 7800gt? 7800GT's perform close to sli 6800GT's.

holy crap man, i guess my friend was wrong. he said that his stock x800 would smoke the 6800gs (even when overclocked). I guess he is wrong (and loves ATI to much).

I also would like to know what exactly it means when the vidcard says that it has 8 or 12 pipelines.

12 pipes vs 16 pipes, but 425MHz vs 350MHz core clock speed.. so yeah the two perform roughly the same in actual use.

Plus the 6800GS can easily hit 500MHz or more. Mine is running quite comfortably at 530MHz and easily breaks 6000 in 3dMark05, putting at the level of the 7800GT at stock settings.

The x800GTO is a slightly higher clocked version of the x800 Pro, right? If so, 6800GS vs x800GTO is basically a wash, with the 6800GS probably winning by a bit depending on the game.

If the x800 Pro is a slightly slower version of the x800GTO, the choice is obvious, even ignoring the overclocking.

Yeah, he was wrong. The numbers don't lie:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2593&p=3
The 6800GS smokes the x800GTO in every benchmark before a 20% OC.

Pixel pipelines are basically the number of pixels the card can process simultaneously. Imagine you have a million cars (pixels) that have to get from the garage (GPU) to the car show (monitor). A highway with 16 lanes (pipelines) will be able to move twice as many cars at the same time than a highway with 8 lanes. Pipelines are very important and more pipelines = more performance.

lol 6k = 7800gt? and since when is 05 the end all benchmark for video cards?

My 7800GT gets more in the 7k range at stock settings.

At 530/1.3, with my X2 3800+, I get 6530-something. This is roughly on par with a stock 7800GT for a similar processor, which can be expected to be 6700-6900.

kirbyrj, you also have a much faster proc and twice the RAM that I have.

And no, 3dMark is not the anything of benchmarking, but it gives a good idea of where the card fits into the world.

Impressive!

These guys weren't able to hit 6500 at stock speeds, even with an X2 4800+ and 2GB of RAM

http://www.elitebastards.com/page.php?pageid=12819
And these guys weren't able to break 6000 with an A64 3500+ and 1GB of RAM

Both of these were modded.

Same thing here.. at stock speeds not a single x800 card, even the modded x800 GTO2's, broke 6k.

Hell, this X800 GTO2, unlocked OC'd from 400MHz to 520MHz, *just barely* squeaked by 6000.

How are you getting such high scores?

without overclocking the 6800GS is the undisputed champ of the $200 price point...nothing else comes close...

The GTO came close when it was able to be unlocked... it can't be unlocked anymore, and even when it was the best it could do was match the GS in most things at stock speeds, with the GS generally having more OC'ing headroom. When they're both running at stock the GS smokes the X800GTO, period.

The GTO2 does well for itself when unlocked and overclocked, and if it were the same price as the 6800GS I'd say it's a wash. However, they are not the same price and the GTO2 offers no real performance advantage over the 6800GS in all the benchmarks I've seen.

I have a 6800gs runs fine ( really brilliantly)and not even a bit overclocked mainly ofr the fact i don't kno how to you guys have mentioned how easy nvida have made it where about is the tab for overclocking ive seen in it loads of sites can never find it

Cheers
i really take advantage of this card

Google "coolbits" and add the little bit to the registry, then you have the OC tab.

that clock frequencies tab you can't seem to find is unlocked by downloading and adding coolbits to your registry.
just download and double-click the reg file.

edit: damn, kirbyrj beat me to it :D

I'll just say that the GS has SM 3.0 vs. SM 2.0b so I think the GS is more future proof. I have a GTO2 though cuz the price was right. I get 6500 in 3d 05. You can see my specs in my sig.

Oh, and Powercolor is releasing a X800 GTO 16. It has 16 pipes unlocked from the factory and is going to cost $179.

Sorry if im a bit off on the subject but i need some help
i want to medium overclock i was wondering if you guys after giving me that great link could help us out
my current setting

please just tell me straight up the numbers you would hve also about the fans bit

I would really like to know how these two cards (links provided) compare. Because my friend, as i said before thinks that his x800 PRO (stock) can woop the Nvidia 6800GS :) thanks

well lets put it this way:
x800pro is a tad slower than the x800xl.

now go here for some 6800gs benches showing it surpass the x800xl. if you overclock the beast, the delta is going to get even wider.

your friend is.....confused.

My X800 Pro squeeked out a bit over 6600 on 3dmark05 so Im happy with it.

that was using stock 3.6ghz p4 procs and probably older drivers
heck i almost broke 6k with a 6800ultra @ 450/1200 and thats with a barton.. at 2.1ghz at that.

I get 6500 with my GTO2 and my 3000+ winnie is at 2.3Ghz with 1GB of ram. My GTO2 is at 537/610

i don't think so. Two of my buddies last year each had sli 6800GT's and they got ~8800 3d05s with stock 3500+s. I don't get that much with a GTX and a stock 3000+. Granted there are processor limitations, but I don't think a normal GT can get alomst 9k.

I really dont care about 05 to be honest.

A much better comparo is to the X800XL, 16 pipes at 400 MHZ holds up a lil better against the 6800GS. If you were partial to the red for any reason you can pick up a X800XL for under 200 at Newegg right here.
The X800XL likely won't be much of an overclocker but at stock speeds will give the 6800GS an excellent run. Buy the one you want based on the features and performance you need and don't worry if someone has a higher OC or ORB score than you. Merry Christmas!
