Ok, well I got my house robbed and computer stolen not too long ago. Now I'm buying a new computer from Dell. Yes shut up I should be building my own blah blah blah. Well after building my last pc only to get it jacked a month afterwards, and the brain damage that ensued with my insurance company, I just want a PC now and don't want any hassle.

With that being said, I'm customizing my dimension 8400 and I'm stuck at my video card selection. They offer:
BASE: 128MB PCI Express™ x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon™ X300 SE
+$180: 256MB PCI Express™ x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) nVidia GeForce 6800
+$540: 256MB PCI Express™ x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon™ X850 XT PE

Now, if I decide to be cheap and get only the geforce 6800, am I going to regret it later?

The other options I chose are:

Sound Blaster Audigy™2 ZS (D) Card w/Dolby 5.1, and IEEE 1394
(my buddy had serious problems with the 8400 mobo onboard sound, so I'm going audigy)

Forgot to say what I use it for: Gaming. Like hl2, doom3, wow, etc. Also do some programming work and a little photoshop but that's not big cause I do most of that at the office and would rather come home to a rad gaming system then a productive work machine
 
Yes I know it's better. But am I going to end up buying one anyways in 2 months when I realize that the 6800 sucks? Or can I use the 6800 for at least a year and not be made fun of at lan parties for running farcry at 640x480? Is the performance drop-off really going to hinder me with any new games coming out in the next year?

Eh, the 6800NU is a decent card and will last you a year or two. I think, though, it depends on the resolution. 1600x1200 wont be good for you in a year or two with eye candy, but 1280x1024 and below will last you two years probably. I think it would be a good idea to get the 6800NU, and use the savings for the next generation. Looks to be a pretty decent leap in performance like this generation was.

Well, it kinda sucks that you can't get an A64, but anyway...

From Dell's options and prices, I would go for the 6800 as it's much cheaper and now THAT much slower than the X850. Then you could upgrade to an R520 later this year :cool:
 
Yea I like the idea of using my saved money towards something better in the future too. Yea and I'm bummed about their lack of non-intel cpus. I would've much rather had a nice 3500+ er something.

I'm was also looking into some of those smaller prebuilt system makers like monarchcomputer.com and ibuypower.com, but I'm concerned about their quality and customer service. I mean, it's not everyday your psu or mobo burns out right out of the box, but if it does happen to me, I don't to be hosed when it comes to replacement and repair.

well i had 2 friend who built amd 64 systems, one went with ibuypower the other with monarch (tried talking the guy who went with ibuypower into going monarch but he wouldnt listen). the ibuypower guy kept having overheating problems with his rig. i took a look inside and almost fainted at the mess. cables EVERYWHERE. i ended up moving the system into a antec super lanboy and heating issues went away. the guy who went monarch didnt have a single problem. (also monarch checks to make sure the motherboard and cpu work perfectly. like when the winchesters first came out almost all the motherboards needed new bios's. monarch flashed a new bios to my friends abit av8 motherboard for free)
 
lol...I can't believe he said he will be made fun off running farcry @ 640x320 :) haha ur funny man.....it's a good card for only 180...the x850xtpe is alot faster....but the 6800 NU will last you for more than another year..you can probably play everything now and then @ 1024x768 with high details....but remmeber...teh x850xtpe is ALOT faster :) probably 100% faster :)

I got mines there.....VERY GOOD computer for a low price....both AMD and INTEL SHIPPED real fast to me in cali...1 week...exactly... very good custom,er service..even though I have never needed to use it...I heard from reselleratings..I gurantee you, this company is badass.... I built my old system...a few months ago....athlon 64 3200+ 9800xt one gig OCZ ram, logitech z-680's etc etc etc...for under 2k and those were top of the line stuff.....except with teh fx-51 being top...but still....I recommend them over Ibuypower...but monarch computers is good..but just not as "organized" as abs...
 
Go with the 6800. The X850XT PE isn't worth it on your setup since the CPU will be holding it back anyway. Plus next-generation GPU's are right around the corner, so it wouldn't be wise (IMHO) to waste it on a high-end GPU now. But it's your call which route you take. :)
 
I did it. Got the 6800. Man my wallet hurts. Won't get here for another week and a half though :(
 
Ya know, I'm a big advocate of don't judge a book by it's cover. And just because a PC makerss website is crappy, doesn't mean they make bad PCs. But michaelscomputers.com looks like the equivalent of a back-alley dealer in Tijuana.
 
Thanks to everyone for their advice too. I guess in time we'll see if I made the right choice. But I definately can't see anything wrong with saving $360! I'm confident that the 6800 will tide me over until my next gpu purchase.

It should. I just upgraded from a 6800 to a 6800GT myself, but only because i realized it would cost me about $24 to do so.

I was in the market for a new computer. I came across Michaels computers and saw the MX8 Viper. First off I was immediately drawn to the design of the Viper. It is like nothing I have ever seen before. I wanted one immediately just by looking at it. Then when I found out what it comes with, I decided this was the computer for me. I was amazed at how fast I received it after ordering it. When I first turned it on, I was blown away by how fast it is. The colors and graphics are so bright and vivid. I had more than one window open and it still performed at the same speed. My MX8 viper is like nothing I have ever seen before. IT BLOWS AWAY ALL OTHER COMPUTERS!! I will never own another computer from anyone but Michael of Michaels computers...

Hmmm, interesting argument...his CPU will hold back his video card on this generation's high end, so you advocate waiting until the next generation is released to buy a card?
 
If he blows it on an X850XT PE now, he'll have to upgrade the CPU sooner or later. With next-generation GPU's coming in fast, it would be wiser to spend a bit more cash on a faster CPU now, and later on buy a newer generation GPU. Because graphics cards go obsolete pretty quickly, they are *usually* upgraded more frequently than CPU's.

But like I said, it's his call, I'm just giving my opinion. :)
