680 or 7970?

Should be even lower than that IMO. We've had pratically the same performance/price ratio for 2 years, and I can't believe people are debating over whether the 7970 or 680 is better value... they're both terrible value. I'd love to see nVidia's profit margin on the 680.

Initially cards are priced higher to make up for development costs. Over time, the costs should drop.

The 4850 launched at $200, the 5850 launched at $250, the 7950 launched at $450. Seems AMD's shareholders weren't impressed with gaining market share and just wanted to gouge customers instead, and a lot of people seem to treat the 7950/7970 pricing as normal.

LOL I came here out of curiosity, I can't afford a 680 or 7970 but am thinking of building a rig and was planing on getting a used GTX 570 for $200. Now you threw 7950 and 480 GTX into the mix! 7950 used would be almost $150 more expensive than GTX 570 used but if what you guys say about OCing to and past 680 speeds is true it seems like a pretty good price (at least compared to what these cards are priced these days).

480 is trash. Uses 200W more than 7850 and 7850s can make 7000+ 3dmarks when OCed all for $239. 480 will never even get close to that w/o extreme cooling. Whatever savings will be eaten in a few months way 480 sucks power. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18389760

Best values are the "50" cards. 7950, 7850 period.

7850 can me made as fast as stock 7970 for $239.

7950 can be made faster than GTX 680 for $369.

Only card nvidia had that was a good value is when 448s were as cheap as $210. They can OC way better than 480, use less power, and will finish on top on all matrices. Too bad they are $260 now.

I have already posted a warning in this thread, knock it off with the personal attacks or people will start getting infracted if that's whats needed

I own a 7970 since release. What fanboyism are you referring to? I paid a premium for the high end card which always have worse perf/$ since the beginning of time.

For a budget part the 7950 was overpriced since it was priced at 449 (same price as a GTX 580 at that point in time) with almost similar performance (talking stock performance). That is just downright absurd.

Even today, the GTX 580 can be had at $350 whereas, the 7950 is priced at $399. A 7970 OC sells for $459. This is just stupid pricing imo.

For me 7970 should be a ~429 USD part and a 7950 should be a ~349 USD part but that is just me.

7950s are going on sale for $349CAD here. I was convinced I wanted an MSI 680 Twin Frozr II for $540CAD but I'm having a hard time justifying the extra $190 over a 7950 and just OC'ing the crap out of it. I have another 1.5-2 weeks to decide though, and of course actually getting a 680 (especially the Twin Frozr) is not easy right now.

OP: 7970 at those prices, it's a no brainer, the premium is way too high on 680s in your country.

Yup, there is only one way to it, at these prices the 680 is obsolete unless you want 3D or CUDA.

I owned the 7970 and swapped it for a 680 for 3D so this is coming from someone who is actually got a 680 (is waiting for them to price drop to SLI) has actually had experience with both cards, and isn't a pathetic fanboy and trying to make arguments.

I would say the 7950 is the best card atm, as over clocked its as fast as a stock 7970/680.
But if you want one of the the fastest, the 7970 right now at the price its at and with the free games is the only option like I said unless you either need 3D/CUDA or have green glasses.

What's sad that is whenever there is a thread of an Nvidia card vs an AMD card on a forum of some one genuinly wanting some advice on which one to get, you get 'fanboys' trying to make an argument, its pathetic, the guy just wants some advice, and the only advice here is to get the 7970, they are just bits of plastic and metal, it doesnt matter who makes them but which is best for him at the price they are, there is no argument about it.

I don't care what people say about the GTX 480. It's only $209.99 on the egg and it kicks ass seeing as it is just behind the HD7870.

I'll cost you 50 cents a day extra just to run it @ 12.5 cents a kWh @ 4hours a day since it uses 200W more power than 7850. Any 'savings' over $239 7850 is chewed up in no time.

Then it's loud, old tech, and will never reach performance of 7850. 7850 OCs 400-450 Mhz frequently and score 7000+ p marks when there. No 480 does that on air.

Who cares about 7870? It's also a waste of money since 7850 is out there and both can reach stock 7970 performances.

But you can fry your breakfast eggs on that GTX 480, think about how much gas/electricity you're saving there

Id go 680 adaptive v sync and better overall drivers for team green sadly

After going form the 7970 to 680 there is no driver issues with the 7970, I play quite allot of games and both cards are fine.

Adaptive Vsyc isnt a reason to spend 100+ more on either, all it does is turn Vsync on and off, so you still get tearing, its better to just put it on or off, the adaptive thing is just for marketing tbh

Adaptive Vsync is supposed to turn it off only when it helps, otherwise leave it on. So if you are in-between steps (like between 30fps and 60fps it will turn it off to allow you to dip from 60fps to, say, 50fps, rather than from 60fps to 30fps which is more noticeable.

The 7970 does have driver issues if you are running 3 or 4 7970's and trying to play at eyefinity resolutions! But I am still happy with my Trifire 7970's!

keeping a gpu powered barely puts a dent in the electric bill nomatter what gpu you use.the power consumption and prices to power these are so overblown its ridiculous

Also show me a 7850 that reaches stock 7970 performance.I wish people would quit blowing smoke and come with facts..

Well there is only one answere, its the 7970, he doesnt need 3D, or CUDA.

Anybody who tells him or advises him to spend $150 more on the 680 for about the same performance are ridiculous and shouldn't be giving advice and keep their crush to themselves because they obviously fancy Nvidia or something....

Did you even look at my link?guess not

What's your link have to do with anything? You asked me to show you a 7850 matching 7970 stock. I did so. Not only matching a stock 7970 but beating it by 700 pts. There are many more where that came from.

I too could link you quite a few 7850's matching 7970's when overclocked.
I dont know why you find it so hard to believe.

Yes, thank you. Finally someone with some sense of knowledge.

Are you going to pay his power bill? I think not so it's easy to dismiss it. Sorry you don't like the math but 200W extra is a lot power, that's like 4 incandescent lights on in my house or ~50 cents in 4 hours using 15 cent kWh national avg for electricity cost.

Flawed calculation as the 480 will not be running at full power draw 24/7/365. Depending on the user, you could assume anywhere from 5-40 hours of gaming a week, the rest of the time it will be idle.

Personally I would never buy a 480 today though unless I was going to water cool, too loud for the speed.
