Soo.. I was waiting for twin frozr or windforce versions of 680 to come out in my country, but now i'm having a dilema...
While those cost 550~600eur, i can get a 7970 for 390eur...

Is 680 really worth it?

Short answere is no

The 7970 is pretty much on par with the 680 once overclocked overall, unless you really need features like 3D Vision and lower power consumption there is no reason to pay over the odds for the same performance.

The 680 is overpriced atm because of demand, not because its better.

At that price, 7970 all the way. 160-210 euro difference is just too much.

Definitely the 7970 at that price. But I'm surprised the GTX 680 cost so much, how much is a reference 680?

Its the same prices here in the UK.

Theres loads of 680's in stock here, but they cost £440
While you can get 7970's for £350, some even lower with special deals.

Also dont forget you get 3 free games with the 7970's atm, and they are pretty good upcoming games too, its a steal compared to the 680.

The 680 is way overpriced.

And the thing is it actually costs allot less to make and produce than the 7970.... it has less RAM and less components on the PCB and is smaller, Nvidia are making a killing, they got their 670ti put it at a high clock at stock and called it the 680 and think its alright to charge true 680 prices.

I got the 680 for 3D in exchange for my 7970, but atm they are very overpriced compared.

No point at those prices. Hell I don't want to pay 50$ more for a 680 if I can get a 7970 for 450$. 100+ euro and pounds are just way too much for 8-10% performance gain (talking about overclocked 7970 to an overclocked 680).

Get the HD 7970. Even the highest clocked custom designs like MSI Lightning (1070 Mhz) or PowerColor PCS+ HD7970 Vortex II (1100 Mhz) should be cheaper than GTX 680 given the price gouging happening. You should be able to crank the HD 7970 up to 1150 Mhz at stock voltage. And you have better than GTX 680 performance across a wide range of games :D If you want max perf go for voltage OC but perf/watt might be not good (the extra power required to extract more performance might be a lot). Plus the extra heat/noise might not be worth it .

7950 is a fail card. It is too late and completely worthless at its stock settings. It is a card that is trying to compete with a card (GTX 580) that was launched about 16 months or more ago... plus it is priced wrongly even after the price cuts. It should've been launched as a 349$ part to make it worthwhile for anyone imo.

Is this a joke?Of all the high end cards the 7950 is far and away the best gpu price/performance when overclocked.I wont even go into benches with you but lets just say it will overclock as high if not higher then a gtx 680 and only be 5% slower ya thats a fail  ya $349 at launch when the gtx 580 was going for 450-500$ that makes alot of sense.troll elsewhere or atleast own one before spouting your nonsense

Im glad someone else notices the power of the 7950.Im kind of in awe of how much its overlooked here.Think im done pleading the case for the 7950 though its becoming a lost cause lol

Yeah I can agree to some extent. The Sapphire HD 7950 OC or Gigabyte HD 7950 OC Windforce might be good cards. But the stock voltage might not let you get 1150 Mhz because they aren't top bin models like custom HD 7970 OC models. So if you are definitely gonna try voltage OC you can consider the HD 7950 OC editions.

Yes the 7950 clock for clock is the same performance as the 7970/680, so once your overclock it can reach stock 7970/680 performance for a very cheap price.

Kickasscop the 7950 is heavily underclcoked from factory. All will meet 7970 speeds whatever they are and when they do they are only 0-4% slower. See review above. Why would you pay extra $100USD for the same? A GTX 580 will never reach performance like a 7950 can so it's priced accordingly, above it.

well to be fair i did flash mine into a 7970 it didnt really do anything other then let me play with higher voltages. It did get a slight performance increase all by itself tho

From what I've seen in forums they clock same so i dunno about binning. overclocking is never guaranteed but i guarantee 7970 performance (7950@910Mhz) for $100 less.

GTX 580 not reaching highly overclocked speeds is one thing and pricing a new line of cards that came about 14 months later according to existing cards is another. Even at 479 the 7970 is overpriced imo. The perf/$ ratio almost stayed the same with this generation which is just sad.

Let's get real for a second. AMD's current generation of video card's pricing was based on the performance and pricing of the LAST generation. Who the fuck does this? Am I smoking crack here or in the past have new cards offered more performance for the money or offered the same level of perf as last gen for less money? With this current pricing, replacement model, video cards are going to get faster, but continue to get more expensive. That being said, AMD gave me little reason to upgrade my 6950 since it's still a relevant performer even at the price I paid over a year ago. If they wanted my monies they would have offered me a larger perf jump at my price point.

I can guarentee you all 7950's will hit 1000 mhz without messing with voltage.Ill even say most will go 1100 mhz without touching voltage.I got mine to 1125 mhz no voltage but im pretty sure i can get it to 1150 mhz

You what? I thought AMD caught onto that after the 6950/6970 fiasco...

The 680 is better and it is overpriced at the moment due to reseller price gouging.

sorry to say this but your comment stinks of fanboism. Most HD 7950 OC models are able to hit 1 Ghz at stock voltage. Some do better. At that speeds the HD 7950 makes a clean kill of GTX 580 across the board with still enough left in the tank. With extra voltage people like banenwn are getting it to hit 1.25 Ghz speeds and getting GTX 680 OC performance. :D

Look at the GTX 580 pricing . 4 models below USD 400. the rest are between USD 419 and USD 549 not considering water cooled models (according to you thats correct pricing i guess :p)

I can't say that I am surprised, since there are so many like you who are in another reality. In fact I have come to expect more guys like you. :p

The 7970 is now priced the 580 was priced last year..... and its about right for the fastest single GPU (along with the 680) in temrs of what it should cost, it was only at release it was hugely overpriced, but now it is about right.

It NVIDIA and the 680 that is HUGELY overpriced and its them you shouldnow be mad at, not AMD because the price the 7970 is represents the value it should if you compare it to last gens top end GPU (580) as its the same price that was but allot better performing.

And remember, the lower end GPU's are always better value for money, its always been this way, the top end GPU's are less value for money, you have to pay for the best GPU.

Its just that on release they were hugely overpriced and were on the price/performance for last gen, now AMD have dropped the price its about right, its NVIDIA you should be talking about here.

GTX 580 is the most overpriced card out. Even worse than new high end cards performance/$ wise. Unheard of. usually you pay a premium as you go up the ladder, not down. Should be about $300 considering it sucks power like a electric leaf blower and 7950s price. Second most overpriced card is 7870. Only $20 less than faster 7950 and 7950 has 40-50% OC potential.

Only cards worth their money are 7850 and 7950.

well your opinion sucks:) a 7970 oerclocked beats a gtx 580 by 50-70%.Honestly the only card id buy from nvidia right now is the gtx 480.overclocked it will easily surpass a gtx 580 and its only $209 on newegg!

The 680 is not better, once both overclcoked they are on par overall.

I had a 7970 before my 680, trust me they are on par once overclocked, jsut go and loock at comparisons OVERCLOCKED, not at stock because the 680 is clocked high at stock and also turbo boosts further.

The 680 is way overpriced and its Nvidia not just the retailers.
I wont buy one to SLI untill they drop the prices

The AMD HD 6950 was a second gen 40 nm product . The 40nm process was more mature. Plus Nvidia was dominating with the GTX 580 / GTX 570. So AMD's pricing on HD 6970 / 6950 was dictated by Nvidia GTX 570. They had to price HD 6950 lower than GTX 570.
If you want a big leap in performance at USD 299 - 349 wait till 28nm HD 8950 or Nvidia GTX 770 release. The earliest would be late Q4 2012 or early Q1 2013. I guess that would satisfy your expectations.

OK buddy, you done venting now?

+1 for the 680, yeh its priced higher but is the faster card, has more features, can achieve better IQ and imo has better support.

edit: oh I just realised theres a price difference of ~150 euro trashes in your country, thats a lot of coin and I'd have to say the 7970 is a bargain compared to the 680, but make no mistake, the 680 is clearly the superior product imo.

Having owned both with current prices I have no problem recommending either of them. I would say the 7970 since you can actually find it and get some free games now.

I got a GTX 680 coming today but I only chose that because I like NVIDIA's drivers better and I got one for $549 here in the USA.

I am coming from a GTX 580 Lightning so I know it won't be huge gains but I just got a 2560x1440 monitor so hopefully it helps a bit.

Anyone want a MSI GTX 580 Lightning in perfect condition? :)

I own a 7970 since release. What fanboyism are you referring to? I paid a premium for the high end card which always have worse perf/$ since the beginning of time.

For a budget part the 7950 was overpriced since it was priced at 449 (same price as a GTX 580 at that point in time) with almost similar performance (talking stock performance). That is just downright absurd.

Even today, the GTX 580 can be had at $350 whereas, the 7950 is priced at $399. A 7970 OC sells for $459. This is just stupid pricing imo.

For me 7970 should be a ~429 USD part and a 7950 should be a ~349 USD part but that is just me.

50-70%? Where are you getting these numbers from?

Should be even lower than that IMO. We've had pratically the same performance/price ratio for 2 years, and I can't believe people are debating over whether the 7970 or 680 is better value... they're both terrible value. I'd love to see nVidia's profit margin on the 680.

Does anyone remember the HD 4850? It was AMD's second best card at the time, ran pretty much everything except Crysis and I bought one just after release for £120. Now AMD's second best card is £300, 4 months after release.
