CPU - Phenom II x720 2.8Ghz
Mobo - Gigabyte 890GPA
VGA - XFX HD 5850
Ram - 2GB DDr3 1666Mhz
PSU - 650w corsair tx
HDD - WD black 1TB

This is my brand new system and everything is working well (after some gpu fan adjustments anyway). The one thing that's bothering me is a high pitched squeal coming from (I believe) my PSU.

I've never heard of coil whine before today but I think that's what the noise may be. It only happens in two scenarios, so far. Right at the end of the loading screen in 3d mark vantage, and during the intro movies in crysis. These are times when my fps shoots up to 2500+, any other time the PSU is fairly silent.

It's a very "unhealthy" sound, so I'm wondering if you more experienced guys think it's coil whine or something else, and if it is coil whine, should I return the PSU? Is coil whine dangerous or a precursor to hardware failure? Could something blow up or short circuit? I really don't know.

thank you!

I think some Seasonic made psu's (as the 650TX is) are known for coil whine. It's not normal and I think you should RMA it. I think Corsair would be glad to send you a new unit without coil whine.

Well I hear it's not that uncommon. I just want to know if there are any negative effects from it aside from the occasional noise it makes. The noise doesn't bug me, but a failing or exploding PSU would =p

No ill side effects or negative effects besides annoying noise.

Had a similar problem with my older build. Was a Tagan BZ 700w, E8400 and an EVGA GTX285.

The higher the FPS the higher the noise. Was worst during intro movies where the FPS might go into a couple thousand.

Tried a GTS 250, same whine, also briefly tried a 4860 ? I think it was, the noise was less noticable but still there.

Googled it awhile back and found that the PSU and GPU combo I was running was not uncommon. Never found a solution sadly. Got the HX1000 now from Corsair and running 2 5870's crossfired and the silence is amazing :p
