Well after tons of tweaking and constantly trying to find the best stable speed my cpu has finally crapped out. Just today when trying to boot into windows my system would just reboot itself over and over. Before that i was listening to music running prime95 then the comp froze. Rebooted into BIOs to set everything to default, saved, then ran into loading screen then the restart crap. In fact i can hear the CPU start up and stop, when i went to shutdown by holding the power button there was no shutdown like sound. There goes a 900$ CPU :( :(

Not sure though..could be my power supply that went or memory. Thats why iam asking here with all the experts :)

Clear CMOS.
Give some time to a CPU to cool down and there You are.

When CPU goes it smokes :)
When CPU goes it just dies it doesn't realy start making problems and go slowly it goes wit ha bang.

Most probobly something fucked up in CMOS of mainboard. OC CPU brought back to stock speeds will not just crap out like that. It will die in OC mode.

Good luck,

MD

Ugh bad news for me. I tried everything as you suggested and i'll still make it to loading windows screen then right before i get into windows it crashes.

I guess i should also meantion that i had it running max at 2.85ghz @ 1.75v. Back and forth figuring out the best speed. Well if this CPU did go i'll just look for those new AMD cpus which are cheaper and can OC better than this crap 4k+

shit man, i feel you ....read my thread - "help! My new Athlon 64 system wont boot!"

maybe u should try it in another motherboard, and c if it works....maybe some dodgy shit happened to the mobo

if u cant find another mobo, then try a different cpu in ur mobo

If it were the cpu, the board wouldnt POST. You'd just get a beep code at power-on, definitely no attempt to boot windows.

You wouldn't get a beep. The CPU is employed to produce the beep. It's part of the standard POST.

Sometimes the motherboard will tell you its the cpu when the cdrom lights start flashing and flickering. I had many cpus die and all of them show that usually.

Your CPU is prob ok. However everything else in your system may have crapped out. Had U burnt the CPU Ud be looking at nothing when powering up. Any more then nothing and your CPU iis ok.

Maybe some data on your hard drive got corrupted, preventing Windows from booting. Try booting from a CD or floppy just to see if the computer operates as expected. For example, boot from a floppy with Memtest86. Your problem sounds like it could be anything but the CPU!

my guess is that the memory is where your problem lies, what voltages/speeds were you running the ram at?

I had that happen where it would just cycle over and over, reinstalling windows straightened the problem out for me.

"Maybe some data on your hard drive got corrupted, preventing Windows from booting."

^^ YES. What is your T-ras setting at?

I had mine to low when tweeking my system. Was doing something in wondows and comp restarted. While loading windows it would auto restart. I went looking around the web and found that if you have this setting too low, and your ram can't handle it, it can corrupt windows.

I reinstalled windows, raised Tras, and 1 year later, im still good to do.

Your CPU is not dead.

do u ahe sata hard drives?

the cpu is ok sfor sure, or u would get nothing, but, your HD is currupted, u need to reformatt, then i bet everything will be ok, keep OC ing :)

send to houston and i'll test it. if you are certain its dead u got a very expensive keychain

No, you can't hear the CPU start and stop. No way can the CPU make noise. Always look for the obvious, format and a new install of windows will probably do wonders.

Wonderboy: ahahahhah

Anyways, I have a true story to share.

This happened during the winter of 2000 / 2001.

And before I get started, I wish I could remember what AMD cpu it was and board. I remember the board was an Abit and highly rated at the time.

Anyways, remember those brass looking 5 1/4 rails you used to get with Maxtor harddrives? Well, I had used one in my tower case to fit a 3 1/2 harddrive.

To cut right to the nasty part of the story, the rails were pushed back over on to the motherboard and I kept smoking cpu's due to the metal rails coming into contact with something metal on the board. I smoked 3 of them before I figured out the problem.

300 dollars a pop or ... nearly a $1,000 with tax..

Now it may seem like I am an idiot and maybe I was, BUT, I am giving you the very short version of the story in addition to, my memory being bad with this happening such a long time ago.

Back when this happened, it really really hurt my pocket book and feelings.

ouchies :(

but, as has been said about 10 times in this thread so far, your cpu is definitly not dead.

first thing i would do is get memtest onto a floppy. if you get errors in some tests and not others, it's probably the ram, but i have a sneaking suspicion that you won't get errors.

also, when you clear the bios, make sure you unplug the power supply and take out the battery, then switch the jumper. i know you shouldn't need do this, but there have been times with my board that doing one of them fixes my problem. so do both when clearing bios.

if memtest is fine, and windows still doesn't load.. you definitly killed something in the operating system, and it'll probably just need a reinstall. no biggie :D
however, just out of personalexperience, if the windows install dies, it's usually the fault of ram being pushed too far, or the memory controller. not the cpu ;)

Have you tried re-installing windows? High overclocks can kill windows installs....

didnt really read all the posts, but this is what i have to say, what cooling method are you using? temperatures? has the ram been thoroughly tested before? is your hdd ok? have you thrown your computer against the wall lately? did you spill soda in there? did an animal get inside and kill itself? and not enough dust has collected to kill it right? hmm psu ok?

As everyone else said your CPU is not dead. If it was the system would not even post. I have had a problem like that with the voltage on the power supply not being sufficient to initalize components when windows starts. Also it might just be that the HD is just corrupt. Have you tried running in safe mode? Someone said that high overclocks kill windows installs. I havent experienced it myself, but it might be true. Other than those few items i dont know what to tell you but i do know that its not your CPU.

Boy glad to know you aren't just guessing at things. Do you by chance do tech support for Dell or something?

There isn't anything else to add until the original poster checks back in after trying some of the suggestions.

Also get a friend to let you barrow their PSU/buy a Quality PSU. Sounds like the PSU maybe doing something flaky on the 12+ rails.

Put the CPU in the freezer. :)

Anyone who has done the freezer trick and recovered a peice of hardware knows what im talking about :)

Im honest to, not to say this as a joke. There is no gaurentee of course, but, the freezer trick has worked for me 2 times :) Lady luck was mostly on my side tho

well those are always the most basic things to check, usually always one of them being the culprit. i started throwing out suggestions because i was in a rush to get to class so...

haha well some of the stuff was just meant as a joke... hope no one took it too seriously :p
sorry to those who did.

I had this problem once with an xp 2500+... I had the stock HSF on backwards and it was getting too hot. :p

Wow thanks for all the help. Iam gonna try a memtest first and see how that goes. If memory runs fine then i'll try a reinstall of windowsxp. Its really odd to get into the windows loading screen and almost finish then get a restart. I'am kinda pointing my finger at the windows side...cause before this after windows loaded i would run into a windows diagnostic screen asking me that it'll do a scan of my drive. Right after the speedy scan my system would restart.

I've also tried safe-mode and i still got a restart after loading.

I got a extra single 512 pc-3200 ram sitting around i'll through in. For cooling iam using koolance exos-al. Good cooling with my fans also which run at 2500 rpms - 4000 rpms.

Heres my computer specs:
a64 4000+
geil pc-4200 512meg
Antec 550w psu
ata133 maxtor hd

ok tried both types of memory and still nothing. Right now iam actually installing windows on my other HD and thats CPU intensive so obviously the CPU is still working.

Right now i do think its a corrupted file in windows. Still not getting my hopes up yet, going to try and finishing this install and see if i make it into windows alive! :)

I think you'll be OK... I've destoryed several XP installs due to OC'ing and have actually killed a partition or two too! (Easy Recovery Pro is your friend!)

So what happened? You get it up and running?

:D :D So it was file corruption. Ive reinstalled windows and everything is running fine. Thanks everyone for all your help.

Now back to overclocking :)

I've killed windows 3 times, but the reason was for a bad SATA lock. I remedied that issue swiftly, haha.

actually, it would appear that HardBBQ gets the honor of being the first to suggest it :D

and baron, just to confirm, you are now running in the sata ports between the video card and processor?

yea, ive had to reinstall windows several times OCing, most everytime from a corruption from the memory.

Yes, between agp and cpu. SATA3 and 4 are located there on the DFI.

yeah, that's what i'm doing too. just double checking to make sure that's not the reason for my weird htt limit.
