Hey guys, can you help me select some parts for my father's office PC.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

Web browsing, invoices, work documents. Strictly for work, might be used as a backup for our CMM machine.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

600, 650 with tax. I would like to be able to print out the online prices and bring em to Frys so I can get the build done ASAP.

3) Where do you live?

San Jose, CA
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word
I'm doing a fresh build, will need everything besides devices and a GPU.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

I'll be reusing a monitor, mouse, and keyboard.


6) Will you be overclocking?

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?

23 inch LG we have as a backup I believe.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

Sometime this weekend.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.

Onboard video, MUST have a PCI slot. Not just PCI-E, must have at least one PCI slot.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

No I don't, I plan on purchasing a 64-bit version of Windows 7 for this build.

RAM: 4GB DDR3, here's some Team Elite (a brand I do like) for $34: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313072 - but Corsair, Mushkin, G Skill, etc., will all be fine as well and can be found for around the same price.

HD: 2x 1TB... Hitachi 7k1000.3 $60x2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145304 - RAID-1 these, Intel Matrix RAID will be fine. I'd recommend Samsung but since their HD division has been bought out, I won't buy them anymore. I HATE Seagate with a passion.

You can pick a case yourself. Also, just because I have specced RAID-1 does NOT mean that you don't need a backup. Even if it's just an external drive, or even a good USB flash drive for your important documents...

Can you get to the Microcenter in Santa Clara? Also, since you're in California, look to purchase items at Amazon since they do not collect sales tax. If you do purchase from Newegg, use combo deals to save money too.
 
Indeed they are. $180 for a Core i5-2500k. $150 for a Core i5-2400. I think they have CPU + motherboard combos for about $300 right now. Check out their ad on their website -- it'll have more specifics. Page 28 is the one you really want.

I've got to get my daughter to bed but I'll try and post some specific parts for you later. Oh, and I forgot you were looking at a Core i3-2100. Those are $100, and they have a combo where you can get a cheap motherboard for another $20 (see page 4.) I'm picking one up for my girlfriend on Monday or Tuesday.
 
Ooo, I looked into it, the $20 motherboard doesn't have a PCI. Just PCIe. It doesn't have RAID either, but I'm not sure why you'd need that for the described system. It also only has VGA out -- no DVI or HDMI. So I think your better bet would be to buy the $100 Core i3-2100 and then get a motherboard separately of your choice (unless Microcenter can give you some sort of deal.)
