5x1 portrait eyefinity options

With the release of the 6990, I'm looking to do 5x1 portrait, but not sure of the best route. I'm only playing MMOs like LOTRO and Rift, but I figure I should utilize a CrossFire setup at least, right?

I have a 5870 1gb card now. After upgrading mobo, cpu, etc., would it make sense to buy a 5870 Eyefinity 6 and CrossFire with my current 5870? (would save ~$450 over the 6990) Will the 1gb of memory on my current card be holding me back alot? Again, I'm only playing MMOs like LOTRO and RIFT.

Now there's the 6990, but not sure I want to spend that much.

As for 6970/6950s, I see the triple slot Asus 6950 or 6970. $325 + another ~$250 to CrossFire 6950 cards for 5x1 could be doable. Or would waiting for the displayport hubs to come out make more sense? There an ETA on availability for those?

Are there other options for 5x1 portrait?
 
5x1 portrait, I assume 1080p monitors? You really need three GPUs for such a setup. 1GB won't even be close to cutting it. A 6990 at the very minimum, three 6970s the best bet if they ever come out with those darn MST hubs.
 
at the resolution a 5x1 setup would be pushing, the 1gb framebuffer is gonna seriously limit you. I don't know as much about those particular games in that respect, but thats some serious resolution if you wanna push high settings. I would get a 2gb card if I was going for those resolutions no matter what games I was planning to play. That could mean going for 2x5870 eyefinity6 w/ 2gb, or a 6990. I also dislike the idea of triple slot cards, but thats just me.
 
Also if a Software 5x1 would be a possible option for you there is SoftTH and that will get you 5x1p on 6970s/50s. without that or a hub there is no current way to do 5x1 on those cards. 6990 is the option i am going to go with because from what i have seen and used out of the E6 cards they are not near enough if you are spoiled like me and like Max settings and 8xAA and all that jaz.

However judging by MMO you will have alot of CPU bound games so a 5870 E6 may do the job for you.
 
Yes, five 1080p monitors. Using 3x1 portrait ATM and would just add two more of the same.

Also, yes, I was hoping by just playing MMOs I could get away with less, especially since I'm ok without maxed settings. I would be upgrading to this MSI board 790fxa-gd65 along with a 6-core AMD chip. However, from what I gather my current 1gb card may be too much of a bottleneck when paired with the 2gb eyefinity6 5870. Decisions, decisions...
 
Hopefully you'll be removing those bezels from the LCD's ;)

I'd recommend Dual 6990 for ultimate performance, Tri 6950; unlocked to 6970s for bang/buck acceptable performance.

Dual 6950s unlocked to 6970s to run minimal with no AA and lower IQ settings as the minimum settings.
 
I am getting great frames in BC2 and everything else I play with two 5760 e6 editions on five 2408wfp 1920x1200 screens.

I am super bummed that the 6990 doesn't have 5 DP.
