5K3000, Still Viable?

I'm in desperate need of upgrading my existing storage system. I've got a lead on some 2TB 5K3000s and I know they are incredibly highly regarded around here, but with the WD acquisition, and unkown warranty exchanges, would you still buy them?

I'm looking to either do an ZFS all-in-on solution or an Snapraid/Unraid type setup (still debating). The main usage will be whole house media streaming, likely to only 2 users at a time, but with the possibility of future expasion.

I had been planning on getting some of the WD Reds, but they are still more expensive then I'd like to spend.

Thanks for any opinions.
 
I'd say yes. I've been ordering 7k3000s (~50 drives) lately and had good luck with them. It's a small sample, but it seems like they are still the drive to get for what you're talking about, and I personally have no problem recommending them to you.
 
for me there wouldnt be another option because I've found the other manufacturers cheap 2tb drives to be terrible. which is ironic considering
 
Ive got 8 5K3000's that have been in 24/7 use for over a year in a RaidZ Array, not a single fault or error so far.
 
Thanks for the opinions guys. I went ahead and ordered 5. I'm looking forward to replacing some aging drives. Most of them are several years old and I just have a feeling are ready to decide to stop working very soon!
 
You cannot go wrong with 5K3000's. Probably my favorite spinning disks of all time for many reasons. There's a reason Backblaze (and by extension Netflix) along with many other companies have petabytes upon petabytes of 5K3000's.

And I wouldn't get too hung up on the warranty issue and the fact that WDC is on the hook for servicing them now. The fact that Hitachi's tend to outlive their warranties weighs heavier in importance for me versus the idea of buying some other brand. Worst case you might get a WDC drive back and you can sell it, and FWIW I recently sent a Hitachi 7K2000 in for RMA replacement (had nothing really wrong with it but I was more curious what I'd get back) and I received back a Hitachi 7K3000.

Ultimately, Toshiba is going to be the way forward for people looking to expand their existing pools of hitachi disks, once Toshiba-stickered Deskstars are available en masse.

+1 on the 5k3000's. I have 2 dozen at home and hundreds at work. They are workhorses, get them while you can.
