sorry about my last post, but i hope it goes here.
i was wondering what the top of the line computer products were. can u guys give me some? thx

Okay- my personal favorite power supply; many will agree- PC Power and Cooling

And I personally like Seagate Harddrives- you can spend a shitload there..

Finally, Mushkin memory is pretty damn good IMHO.

5K? Get a 7800 gtx 512mb, the new FX60(I will worship you), and the best DFI mobo. And Mushkin is good memory, and a 74 gig raptor, and more if you need space. And grab a decent Lian Li.

Don't bother. Wait until April or so when AM2 is released. It should yield tons more performance with dual core processors.

Mushkin:

http://ramtron.com/ - some baad-ass shit.

I say make an initial investment of $2500 and spend the other $2500 on gradual upgrades. Start with an SLi board, X2 4400+, 7800GTX512, 2GB RAM and later up it to the big league (FX60, dual 512 GTX, 32-way SLI).

I'm hoping to be in the same boat here at the end of the month when profit sharing is announced.

One thing I am looking at is SLI or Crossfire. However the only way to really enjoy those the way they should is to use them at crazy resolutions. They perform well even up to 2000x1600+, and at that point your only real options are the 30" LCD's from Apple and Dell. So that would be almost half your budget right there....but think of the gaming and think of the desktop you would have

Where are you guys getting GTX 512's? Everywhere seems to be out.

I could build you the best PC with all the works and still have enough left over to have a party with 2 HOT strippers having a lesbian sex show & more. Want to hire me?

I'll provide a contract with all the details of the computer build, commisioning party and strippers! :)

holy crap chris, u sorta popped out of nowher lol. wait what is the new am2? and i havent heard of the dfi mobo? can u guys sorta explain? like what it can do

Pair of GeForce 7800 GTX's SLI'd together will be about $1200-$1400
Dump another $1400 on one of the high end s939 boards with an FX-57 perhaps.
If it's gaming you're into, the 74GB Raptors would be perfect. Get 4 or so to set up a RAID array for speed and storage security.
Mushkin RAM is definitely the best I've seen, but check your board specifications before buying too much. Some boards won't support certain RAM at full speed. You can get specs for the board you're looking at from the manufacturer before you even order it.
Whatever PSU you get, get 500W or above. You'll need it for the two 7800 GTX's.

OFT. This is a really good piece of advice. Especially considering how often PC's need upgrades compared to other things.

i didnt believe my friend, but he said the intel was coming out with some new processors and he said it will be better the amd. is that true? and also he said that his friend bought a 200$ opteron and overclocked it higher then a fx-55. i thought that was bullshit. can this be true?:

FX 60s dont run as well as FX-57s

They perform comparably, with the FX-60 taking a reasonable lead in SMP-aware apps, which, to the dismay of single-core proponents, are becoming more and more common.

To the OP: Wait for M2. Then go on your spending spree. :)

I'd say wait until next month for video cards. The 7800 GTX 512 is not able to be found right now, X1900XTX may be available but the 7900 definitely won't. The X1900XT might be a good bet if you decide on teh 30" Dell LCD, since I belive the ATi has dual dual link DVI's that monitor needs.

Go for the window see through raptor hard drives...just freakin cool.

X-Fi Elite definitely as well as get a motherboard on the Pro chipset. I would say run 4GB of ECC non-bufferred memory and a dual core cpu, the FX60 is really good since it's unlocked and can prob push 3GHz. The new M2 socket may be good for VMWare but the DDR2 isn't much of a gain. Then again, you could go with a Crossfire chipset if you opt for the X1900XT...

Ah, decisions decisions...

7900 is coming out? shizz i have to get that. yea i gonna get the raptor harddrives that is fast as hell. i dont get the the

i dont really get it can u explain? im a noob sorry :D .
to you guys, will the fx series be better then the m2's that are coming out (anyone kno when?). and

can u guys sorta answer these? sorry for asking!!

The part about Intel coming out with a processor better than AMD is not ture as far as I know. However, Intel is coming out with a new core some time in the futre to utilize the 65nm structure.

It is easily possible to get an Opteron past FX-57 speeds, though it does require soom skill and a good amount of cooling. I believe the 144 retials for under $200 now...

Personally, I don't think waiting for the M2 core would be at all worth it. Considering one of the major differences would be compatiblity with DDR2 RAM, which has hardly any performance gain over normal DDR, the price wouldn't justify the benefits. Now, I say "the price" in the assumption that when M2 does come out it will be expensive. But considering how much S939 was when it came out, and how low the prices are now, it seems reasonable to bet that M2 will be the same way.

As far as GPU's go..personally, it seems silly to try staying on top of the proverbial dog pile. At this point both ATI and nVidia are simply trying to be the must-have brand for a couple months until the competition releases something marginally better. I'm not saying this is a bad thing; it's what pushed the 7800GT from ~$400 to ~$300 in just over a month. Still, getting the previous generation card isn't much of a sacrifice.

Sorry for the rant..

What will you use it for?
"The best" is quite varied depending on the main usage of the PC.

Intel's coming out with a new chip called conroe that has the potential to be better than AMD, no one knows for sure one way or another. We're just going to have to wait.

Don't know why you would spend 5k on a computer. For 2,000-2,500 you could get a very top of the line computer. With the way tech is moving, what you buy now will be old in a few months. I'd say spending wisely on the components and put the rest away somewhere - that way in 3 months you can upgrade again and continue to keep your pc fresh.

Only change I would make there is a 150GB Raptor over the 74Gig.
Though with that kind of money being put into a computer, a dual dual core Opteron system with 4GB+ of ram would be fun imho. Even if the only use you ever put all 4 cores at once to is folding ;)

Agreed.

4 cores of goodness. If you did go that route, be sure to get a mobo where each socket has its own memory banks. Some of the cheaper dual processor motherboards put all the ram attached to one socket.

thx guys i am just gona wait until the parts will get cheape.r im also gonna wait and check out the new intel that is gonna come out so we'll see. but i am having trouble wit what mobo to use. i might get a FX cpu and 4gb of ram. what do u guys think? and for watercooling, i dont kno which is the best one. how do u tell if a watercooling is really good or not?

The X-Fi Elite Pro is the sound card I am referring to. The nVidia Pro chipset is basically the dual PCI Express X16 chipset, or you could go with the Opteron dual CPU with dual SLi on the same Pro chipset pair (has two chipsets, one for each CPU and each one drives it's own PCI-Express buss).

If you truly want top-of-the-line stuff, you'll need a lot more than five grand.

You'll need to make some compromises. What is it that you'll use the system for?

well i was wondering, i might get
2x 7800 gtx 512
(dont kno which mobo)
fx-60
4gb ram
850w psu
maybe 500$watercooling?
2x 74gb raptors
2x dvd drives

WD1500ADFD delivers the best storage performance money can buy, regardless of spindle speed, interface, or price. Proof.

Umm... I'm not convinced $500 watercooling is worth the money. Sure, it might allow for a slightly better overclock and lower noise than air cooling, but $500 is a lot of money, and the gains are partly offset by the greater upkeep and diminished transportability. It just seems like a waste of money.

4gb ram? By hardcore gaming do you mean playing Halflife 2 and WOW simultaniously? Remember, you can always add more ram when you need it, and it will only get cheaper. No point getting now more than you need.

Really, buying absolute top of the line stuff doesn't make sense. You'll get a barely noticable improvement over a normal high-end system, but pay twice the price. It doesn't make sense. Asking for advice on something like this is silly, since it is obvious that you aren't acting logically in the first place.

I doubt you'll find 512MB GTXs. They are now identified by Nvidia as a "limited release," aren't in stock anywhere, and have enormous backorders. Also, they will probably be discontinued in Febuary.

R580 and G71 should hit yet this quarter, it may be worth it to wiat if you want ultra high end stuff.

That's not proof; it's a reference. And I don't see how it substantiates your assertion; the Fujitsu MAU is showing I/O rates two to three times higher than the WD1500ADFD.

In SR's Server DriveMarks, yes.
Which between effectively undocumented and opaque, and may or may not apply to a particular application. Either way, they do nothing to "prove" the unrestricted assertion you made about the performance of the drive.

74Gb or 150Gb.... both Raptors... both rock.... which ever fits your budget

2 x 512Mb 7800GTX's..... good luck finding 1... much less 2!!

by the time you find them available.... there will be a 7900GTX

4Gb is probably overkill, there's only a few games which benefit from over 1Gb.... so 2Gb is plenty for just about any current game or new game on the horizon.

my instinct is to say...spend $2500 on the gaming computer, $500 on 1or2 monitors, and then spend $1000 on another computer to be the server. having the server seperate gives you a lot more options. Now you have two very nice computers, with $1000 left over for upgrades later on. Or if it's a one shot deal, you could spend that money on a laptop or something. Still, $5000 on a single computer is overkill.

The only dual card solution capable of playing FEAR at 1920x1200 is GTX 512 SLI. 30" LCDs arent for gaming, unless you have a pair of those cards that are going into that monster Dell is putting out - Dual GTX 512s, and even that may not be much help on a 30" lcd, seeing as driver support for 4 cards in SLI isnt there. Crazy high resolutions at which you enjoy SLI are 1600x1200 or 1920x1200 with full eye candy + AA/AF.

Wow.. 5K.. what a waste...

Id go for:
FX-60
RD580 based crossfire mobo
X1900XTX (2 of em)
2 gig DDR500 Ram
SilverStone 600 Watt PSU (I have it, very nice, although i havnt used it yet)
SilverStone TJ07 Case(the $350 dollar one)
2 Sata Slot loading DVD burners
2 150 GIG raptors in raid 0, plus 2 500 gig seagates in raid 0
After market cooling
1 or 2 Dell 24" Widescreen LCD's.

yeah...

The X1900XTX's should be avaible by the end of the month, with the RD580 mobos about the same time.

No idea how much that would cost...
