5970 discontinued?

They could be sacrificing 5970 chips to get more 5870's in stock, which are clearly the money maker for ATI at the moment.
When demand slows for the 5870, more 5970s should be in stock then.

There was a HIS model in stock yesterday for $700. On Christmas eve there was a shipment of Asus for $650. Last tuesday both Asus and Powercolor models were in stock. All these shipments last less than a half hour at newegg.

i really doubt its being discontinued.. its probably just a screw up on egg's part because they dont have any shipment's coming in for the next couple weeks.. my guess is the egg is trying not to do what amazon did and stack up on orders while there is such a limited supply..

Weird thing is the 5970 isn't even an option at the egg anymore. Even if they were out of stock they'd still be listed.

alot of times they'll get new sku's and scrap the old page. More then likely the new cards that will eventually come in will have different numbers.

No, they have done this before. There are rumors of yield issues on AMD's 5xxx series that have just been cleared up.

There was a time a month ago where the ASUS 5870 card said the same thing on newegg.

This product is behaving exactly as the 5870s did, the cards are such a hot product, the retailers just can't keep them in stock.

Put it on your auto notify list and wait a month.:D

My point is this, a month ago when all the 5870's were out of stock, they were at least still listed. They were all shown as out of stock but they were still there. You can't auto-notify something doesn't even exist on their page anymore...

Nope not all of them. I remember one time all the 5870s were deactivated except for one. I don't know what Newegg's criteria is for deactivating a product but they do it often on popular items when running out of stock.

Yeah, I found that strange as well, if Newegg has 5850 and 5870's in stock, why not the 5970's as well? or maybe AMD/ATI is making a newer revised edition for 5970? (Doubt it)

Pretty sure that's the reason - the original HSF design doesn't allow 5970s to run stably even at stock speeds because it's not cooling VRMs properly, not to mention with an overclock they are aimed at. Besides, there maybe a problem with PCB design - why the hell 5970 falls behind 2x5850 in some tests? Although it might be due to downlocking with overheating VRMs

yeah im still trying to get an answer from them on this one... if i get one ill be sure to post here..

Who told you this.Well no of what you said here applies to my 5970.

That's not how newegg works. When they run out of stock on an item and don't expect it to be available in less than a few days, they deactivate said item temporarily. Probably saves them a mountain of time not having to answer "when is X product gonna be in stock" emails.

Nope, lots of the 5870's were deactivated for days at a time when they didn't expect stock to keep rolling in.

I guess someone from Newegg saw this thread because they show them all except the XFX model when you search for 5970. Granted none of them are instock, but they are listed.

Just because some reviewers got dud samples does not mean this is an issue with the majority of 5970s. Mine can run 5870 speeds fine even under extended sessions of Crysis / Furmark at 50 fan speed. If I cranked up fan speed to 100 I could probably hit 1GHz on core. VRMs get a little hot (85-90 C) but that's well below the safe limit. Ever since the 4xxx series I've noticed all reference ATI cards had high VRM temps when stressed under stock cooling, so it's not like this phenomenon is limited to the 5970 either.
