I was thinking how long ago I had to go from 2 cores to 4 cores so GTA4 coming from the 3 core 360 to the pc wouldn't run like a dog.

Think this will ever repeat with a game coming from the 8 core Xbox One/PS4 to the 4-6 core PC?

Not really due to several factors:
1) There may be a lesser amount of cores with the PC but each core is clocked significantly higher at a minimum of a 100% increase.
2) Different CPU architectures. Meaning that Intel's IPC is so much higher than AMD's IPC that comparisons between similar clocked AMD and Intel CPU will generally end up with the Intel being faster overall.
3) Newer GPU APIs like Mantle and DX12 for the PC are now allowing for more efficient handling of video game processing which means lesser demands on CPU performance.

Looks like I'll grab a 5820k.

I'm upgrading, I have what I want picked for the most part, just poking at different variables before I click "secure checkout".

Weighing what I want with combos and discounts.

The H100, hard drives, ssd's, optical drives, fan controller, power supply, etc will be imported from the old system.

What exactly will you be doing with the PC that'll require six-cores?
What PSU?

hmmm...just seems odd to see a X99 setup with only four RAM slots.

It's only four so they can fit it on an matx.

That's why I am getting 32gb all at once.

There are three others, a lesser asrock, evga and gigabyte, the the latter 2 have less power phases.

I wouldn't do the 5820k on x99 mostly due to PCI-E lane reduction. Sure, you are saving some cash, but I wouldn't go up to the x99 platform if you are going to be reducing the amount of lanes you have.

That being said, you are doing an matx build so you must be going for something smaller. If a pure 6-core cpu is mostly what you need then I guess that will work.

I'll be fine, I don't care for SLI anyway. Even if I did 2 way sli, 28 lanes does nothing to performance. The board can't fit 3-4 cards anyway.

It's all installed now. Not overclocked yet, it's 1 ghz slower and still better than my old 2700k.

The framerate in games may not be much better but the feel of the system is miles ahead.

Now for the 980ti/R9 390 to exist...

Might be a bit of a placebo effect going on there if all you did was switch mobo, CPU, and RAM.

That's what I was thinking. Unless he did a fresh install of Windows then I'm sure it will seem faster, but not because of the hardware.
