Well I have to say I am not impressed. I know it's only supposed to be a hair faster but I am getting dips into the 70s with COD Black Ops I never saw before.. but here again I saw peaks of 190's which my 5870 never did. Both cards same settings. 5870 overclocked 950 on core. The 570 I got is the EVGA SC so its at 797 core. Just expected better minimal FPS over the 5870. This is also on the same OS I had my ATI card in. I just uninstalled.. Ccleaned it and installed the Nvidia Drivers. Maybe a fresh OS load will help although this one is only a month old :(

Also I noticed I have no voltage control in MSI afterburner with this card....Even after checking the voltage box and restarting.

Sorry to hear that, I am kind of surprised :/
I just couldn't buy into the new gen of cards, they're impressive, but the increase in performance just isn't big enough for me :(

I am sure your disappointment is genuine, but if you turn off a frame-rate counter do you notice a difference? Is your monitor even >60hz?

Actually yeah.. the Menu for Black Ops seems notchy and I get a notch in the game I never had before. It literally does not feel smoother. Makes me wonder if its because I had a previous ATI driver loaded but yet my Peak FPS are higher but the minimum is crap. I am picking up an Intel G3 or C400 soon as they are released and I will do a reload.

How many games have you tried with the new card? Overall from the reviews i've seen, the 570 has better minimum fps compared to ATI cards, however it really depends on the game. Perhaps the game you are trying simply favors ATI?

So far Black Ops.. still need to load up Battlefield BC2. Really just got rid of my 5870 because I got a good price for it. The Notchy Menu in Blackops has me thinking there is a driver issue or something. Also the card does not clock its self down for 2d? It seems locked at whatever I put it at in Afterburner. My 5870 would still down clock in 2d at desktop.

there is no such thing as "better minimum fps" from one brand to another.

Not quite sure who started these kinds of fud, but it needs to be stop..

It is all about the game that flavor which card, nothing more nothing less...

One thing I noticed and My two buddies running Nvidia just told me the same thing.. the first 10-15 seconds of the game shows kinda low FPS.. then it pulls up. My ATI didnt really do that. I kinda remember my last Nvidia card doing that. Almost like it has to buffer at first.

Ok, so I did some more playing. It is faster. I may have been quick to judge. It's just really odd how my game will start with such a low FPS and within about 10-15 seconds it kinda levels out. The notches had to do with the server I was on. I hadn't had that problem in a long time but on some other servers she was smooth. Running 850/1700/2000 stock volts with custom fan curve I hit 78C peak while gaming. Would love to see it clock down when on desktop to lower the power consumption and temps.

EDIT: I just read when running dual monitors it won't downclock for 2d. That explains that. Guess I am just getting used to the Green Team again :)

Not picking on your choice at all because i'm thinking about either a GTX 570 or HD6950 but why did you pick the card you did? With all the rave over the 6950 and the fact i love my 6970 I was almost convinced.

i dont' get the 190's part.

yeah that is weird i dont get that minimal part. shouldn't it level out even if you start the game, and of course it heats up your starting to play a game load a map get ready for all those renders your card has to do. IMO you should've kept the 5870 and gone CF instead of moving up cause there's not much of a difference

The GTX570 is about 20% faster than the HD5870 if you include games that favour nvidia hardware. If you remove those you're looking at more like 5-10% typically.

At your resolution in Bad Company 2, the GTX570 is 11% faster. I don't really see why you "upgraded" to be quite honest, the GTX570 is a lot less efficient than the HD5870.

Like I mentioned before it was next to nothing to upgrade and Ive been fighting ATI driver issues for a year. Pink screen issues.. big cursor.. GSOD etc.. problems I never had with Nvidia. As far as Crossfire goes I will never run crossfire again. I had Crossfire 5870's and that was an even worse driver nightmare. What it cost me to upgrae is A LOT less then throwing in a 2nd 5870. My system runs cool and silent which is how I like it. I don't get why the card would have to "warm up" before a game? My ATI didnt do this.

After about 15 seconds into the game that minimal part goes away and it stays pretty high. I was just caught off guard by this 15 second time where the card doesn't perform up to its max potential. 2 out of 3 friends I talked to said they noticed the same thing. *shrug*.

I was ready to go back to Nvidia. Everyone can say what they want about how both companies have thier issues etc.. and thats fine. I just know I have had fewer problems with my Nvidia setup's in the past. When I had the chance to jump to a GTX570 for 50$ it was hard to pass up. Also doesn't the GTX570 trade blows more with the 6970 then it does the 6950? I guess it depends on the review site you read.

Sounds like a potential driver issue to me. The big cursor glitch was solved ages ago, pink hue is a rare case that I believe has also been solved, GSOD was primarily a hardware issue, as the driver cause of it was solved shortly after the HD5 series' release. AMD drivers do have plenty of issues, but they aren't quite as bad as a lot of people make out. Nvidia also have their own fair share of driver issues.

Trust me I know all this.. I went through it all and I think my Original GSOD post has grown to 40 pages. It wasn't even hardware related for my case. There were many things that caused the GSOD. Big Cursor Yes fixed and the Pink hue although annoying was fixed also. My 10.10E gave me the pink Hue and when I wetn to I think it was 10.12 I had dual screen problems. It was always something. I am not knocking ATI at all. The card performed great when I finally got it resolved. Only problem with the Nvidia card is the initial slow down which is still plenty fast for gaming for those first 15 seconds or so. Other than that everything is perfect. I imagine a fresh install since I came from ATI may help that issue.

Well this thread is interesting...been contemplating this exact switch. Doesn't sound worth it though and I'll probably wait for the next generation of cards...

If you are going to switch, go big....

then again, there were times where a HD5870 hung with a GTX480 (noticeably not in certain benchmarks, lets say, Heaven 1.1++, which have CUDA calls right in their SDK...).

And considering the GTX570 is at times, slower, and at times, faster, than a GTX480.... it's no utter suprise a HD5870 still managed to power it's way in.
I went HD5870CF-->HD5770-->GTX570, in that order. I guess I am tainted by crossfire issues, and the HD5770 being relatively slow, in comparison. Though I am mITX now... :p

sorry your not happy (really, not being sarcastic) but what did you expect? the H reviews pretty well showed a single 5870 more or less matching a 480GTX performance in the real world. its only in canned benchmarks or in SLI that it outpaced the AMD cards. your simply not going to see much of a difference.

lack of PAP is whats keeping me from upgrading to nvidia right now....maybe in their next gen?

Actually its about 20fps faster just a rough guess watching the FPS counter. What caught me off guard is the initial slowness for the first 15 seconds. Now that I know its only at that point I am happy with the upgrade. I was just pissed at first when I saw FPS in the 60s when the game kicked off.

If I had not gotten a deal I can say the improvement isnt worth it as far as performance goes. If I can upgrade drivers without issues that alone is worth it to me. If you can't get a good amount for your card I would hold off on the upgrade until next gen.

Sorry you weren't impressed, but I can't say I'm surprised. It's easy to get caught up in the hype of all these new cards being released, but they simply aren't that much better than what we've had for the last 18 months. The only single card upgrade that would make a noticeable improvement to a 5870 owner would be the GTX 580, and that's just barely. Despite what everyone wants to believe, and despite how many options we have available, the market is actual very stagnant now from a performance standpoint. Sit on your cash guys until something better comes available.

I didn't buy into this generation either. Just look at it from this point of view assuming you have Nvidia 4 series or AMD 5 series: The jump from 40nm to 28nm is such a big landmark one its going to be hands down the true next generation of video cards.

Look at the games that are currently out. We don't see the big names like Elder Scrolls and BF3 until mid to end of the year.

Ditto. While it's been tempting, I'm holding out for AMD's/Nvidia's next generation of cards. I'm hoping to see gigantic performance gains with the next round of cards. *crosses fingers*

If I was a betting man I would put my entire house that they will deliver. Just look at the jumps from 65nm to 40nm and previous node jumps.

I purchased the Asus gtx570 and also ran it OC'd with a 950 core... I did extensive benchmarks in both empty and full servers for BlackOps and BC2.

The 570 did not perform as well as the 5870 in both BC2 and BlackOps, The 5870 performed 7% faster in BlackOps and 5% faster in BC2.

The CPU makes a big difference, I'm running a Q9650 @ 4.2ghz, possibly a bottleneck.

To be honest, those results surprise me. I wouldn't say the GTX570 is any faster than the HD5870 in the sense you'd feel a frame rate improvement (ignoring the actual numbers), as it's a matter of a few percent. It will however run out of memory later, with 1280M versus 1024M, and it will also take high levels of AA better. It certainly isn't a slower card, and given AMD's issues in bad company 2, I'm very surprised to see a 5870 beat the 570.

Awesome, hehe. :) If you and others had to guess, what performance gains do you think AMD/Nvidia will achieve over the current, single gpu king - gtx 580? Do you think 100% is even possible?

Let's take a look at roughly what we've achieved

AMD:
4870 -> 5870 (55nm->40nm): 75-80% increase in performance, Power increase from 150W to 190W
5870 -> 6970 (40nm->40nm refresh): 10-20% increase in performance. Power increase from 190W to 210W

nvidia
GTX285 -> GTX480 (55nm->40nm): 55% increase in performance, Power increase from 210W to 300W
GTX480 -> GTX580 (40nm->40nm refresh): 20% increase in performance, Power decrease from 300W to 290W.

40nm->28nm is a similar jump to 55nm->40nm. We won't be seeing 100% performance gains over the current top end, but 40% gains are probably pretty reasonable to expect.

Ya I know I was surprised also, the 5870 was the 1st card I purchased out of the (6) different cards that I planed to benchamark.... I was let down by all the other cards I tested out.... gtx460 768mb SLI, gtx470, gtx570, ati5970 and ati6950. 5870 was the best price to performance for my scenario. It even out performed the 6950 when I benched BC2 at 1600x1200 highest settings and only 4xAA, 16xAF with HBAO off.

I also brought both the cards to a local LAN Party so people could see 1st hand the difference between the 570 and 5870 in BC2 and blackops since alot of people just talk BS on forums I wanted real in your face proof for them to see first hand.

You are right about the 570 handling higher levels of AA... I was able to run 32xAA with just a tiny hit in performance, this is where the 570 really shines. When I set my rez to 2,048 x 1,536 with 32xAA I was very surprised how well the 570 performed, no way my 5870 could do that, but it's not like I really would want it to either.

With my scenario of running 1600x1200 with only a need of 4xAA the 5870 ran both BC2 and BO faster at these settings.

Well, there's reasons for almost all of that:

GTX460 768MB SLI - too little memory, and the cards are too lightweight to gain much. The 5870's almost 50% faster, so SLI needs to work well to see any improvement
GTX470 - not designed to head-to-head the 5870, it's a slower card, so no surprises there
GTX570 - That does surprise me, as it should really be slightly faster, if a lot less efficient
HD5970 - Some annoying driver issues held this card back. When it works though (which it should nowadays) it'd blow the 5870 out of the water.
HD6950 - No faster than the 5870 at 1920x1200, well publicised. You don't need the 2GB of memory and the high-load-optimised architecture of the 6900 series at that resolution, it isn't effective.

As an owner of the 5970 for about 8 months now, I just wanted to add my 2 cents here. Initially, the drivers were indeed horrible and the card was definitely held back, like samuelmorris said. Fast forward to present day, and this card performs very well in every single title I own now. As an example, Metro and Starcraft saw gigantic performance gains with updated drivers. My Starcraft fps pretty much doubled once AMD got their act together and Metro, while I don't remember the exact performance gains, it was also very substantial. I'd say close to 100% also.

Precisely. The drivers for the 4870X2 were less than perfect (though better than the initial 5970 drivers) for the first few months, but really, even in QuadCF my experiences in the last year of their life were excellent, and I'd expect the same of the 5970. For every complaint you get about useless performance, crashes and glitches, you get another saying they've had no problems at all. AMD must be doing something right...

Something wrong with your setup... My GTX570 is faster but not a large amount faster in Black Ops and I am only at 850... the 5870 was at 950. I see Peak frames and better minimal Frames (After the wierd 15 second slow start) over my 5870. I can't say its worth it if you don't get much money for your 5870 but to say the GTX570 is slower is just False.
