Would a Corsair 650 watt PSU be able to run 5870?

Also, would it be able to handle the next generation GPUs, such as the 6870?
 
I can answer that in a round about way.
My daughter's computer is a Rampage Formula with an OCd 9450 and an ATI 4890.
I have a Corsair 620 HX doing the work.

In H reviews, the 4890 and the 5870 pulled the same watts under load 383 total.

So I think you'd be safe unless you power a bunch of other stuff.

Well the 6870 power figures hasn't been released so I don't think anyone can make a statement about its power usage.

Anyway, what's the specs of the rest of the PC? Are there plans to OC the CPU or GPU?

Depending on your answer, the 650TX would be enough for the HD 5870 or not enough at all.
 
I know most people are against prebuild systems but I'm really set on going prebuilt. Would the above two pcs be able to be overclocked at all?

You just happen to choose two of the worst PC Boutiques in North America. Not even the people here on the forums that do go prebuilt will touch a Cyberpower or iBuypower made PC. They're owned by cousins or brothers or something like that. Hence why their reputation and build quality is roughly the same. If going prebuilt, go for a more reputable company like Velocity Micro, AvaDirect, or Puget Systems.

There's a reason why those Cyberpower and iBuypower PCs are so cheap.

In any case, neither of those PCs state which motherboard they're using. Not to mention that the PSU is not listed at all nor are those Newegg pics clear enough to determine what PSUs are in those two systems. So really can't say at all whether or not those PCs can be OC'd. Then again they only have stock HSF which means somewhat limited overclocking.

corsair 650? Yes and (probably) yes. I'm assuming a 5870 replacement will not draw more than 300 watts.

Get that PSU and you're set unless you want to go dual high-end GPU or something. A quality 650 can power the highest end CPU and GPU at the same time, full load, plus HDDs, etc. and have cushion left over. Note that if you do extreme overclocking this may no longer hold true, but I'm assuming reasonable voltages.
 
You could Crossfire 5870's on a 650W Corsair with plenty of room to spare. And it'll handle any next generation GPU as well (PCIe spec is a 300W limit).
 
Everyone is greatly overestimating power needs.

No problem running 3 monitor eyefinity at 5040x1050.

plenty of room to spare? a 3.33 i7 with stock 5870 crossfire can hit 600 watts in Furmark so I would almost call that pushing it. yes I know that's at the wall but throw in some overclocking on the cpu and both cards and someone would be getting pretty close to borderline for long term usage. just because you push your system within about 10-15% of what your power supply can handle on the 12v doesn't mean its a wise thing to suggest to others.

So even if he were to run his 5870 Crossfire in Furmark all day long, which is ridiculous, he'd be well below his PSU's capacity. Corsair makes a quality unit and can put out it's rated capacity for life, and he isn't even close to that.
 
I believe I am running a Ultra 550 with my 5870 and it does just fine.

and stop acting like your opinion is somehow superior. just because someone questions what you say doesn't mean they are derailing the damn thread either. some games getting pretty close to the load that Furmark can induce so again with overclocked i7 and highly overclocked 5870 cards that psu would be close to the acceptable limit for its 12v rating under full system load. for most gaming sure it would be fine but claiming plenty of room to spare is nonsense.
