i bought a secondhand xfx 5870.
For some reason the card doesn't display at all. I replaced it with my 8800gts that was there in the meantime but when i turn on the computer the card fan is ramped up 100% and no matter with dvi port or hdmi port it won't boot up. i finally put it in my roomates computer and it still doesn't boot. I put it in conjunction with my 8800gts and saw through windows the GPU isn't being detected at all no matter which slot i put it in. is it a bad bios? I've reinstalled win7 and i can't install the ati drivers since its not being detected.

Verified that you're using the same 6 pin connectors as your 8800 GPU? Sounds like you've been had for a bunk card.

EDIT: What is your PSU? Make/Model.

Doesn't the XFX cards have lifetime warranties?

I guess try calling them and telling them what's up. Hopefully they will send a replacement.

I used both pairs of PCI-E 6 pin connectors on my PSU. Psu is a silverstone op-1000 so it should have enough juice. I will contact xfx once the warranty transfers. Funny thing is i had another 5870 that worked perfectly in there. i guess i just got a bunk card.

original owner said he used the display port to his monitor. is there a switch to put it on DVI? i rememeber my 4870 had dip switches on it, is there anything like that i should be aware of?

I just installed my OEM 5870 that I bought second hand and had some issues that don't quite sound the same but I'll share just in case it helps. I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers for my 8800GT, ran driver sweeper, shut down, removed 8800GT, Installed 5870, boot to windows just fine, installed 10.4 drivers.

This is where my problems started. I rebooted and it would come up as far as the starting windows screen (this is on Windows 7 pro 64bit) and then it would go to a black screen indefinitely. Messed around with all sorts of settings and tried a few other 10.x driver before going to 9.12 which booted up just fine. Ran 3dmark vantage and his the right numbers, plays games fine.

Not sure based on your description if you can get to this point but I would try 9.12 drivers to see if that helps. If you can't get to that point then Bios changes or XFX will have to RMA.

Warranty transfers? You bought this card used? Oh oh. What did the previous owner say?

previous owner said he used the displayport and it worked fine. I plugged in a DP to DVI converter with no luck, DVI to VGA adapter like some google hits said on the AMD forums but no avail. Thought it was win 7 so i reformatted my ssd still not kicking. I went to frys and swapped out the mobo for a ex58 UD3R updated to latest BIOS and still same problem. I am currently typing this with both the 5870 and 8800gts plugged in. the 5870 is screaming at 100% fan and device manager isn't seeing it. Kinda regretting not getting a brand new 480 instead.

Sounds like a dead card to me if it isn't detecting and the fan is staying on 100%. Let us know how RMA goes.

just got back a card from XFX and the fan was FULL of dust. The card stickers were pretty scratched up too so i'm guessing this isn't a new replacement and definitely NOT my old card. I'll plug it in after work in an hour or so.

now that would piss me off. fine you bought it used, but they dont know that. you could have had a brand new shiny card out of the wrapper and you would have gotten the same beatup card as a repalcement. imo that just not acceptable.

My 5870s would run the fan at 100% on boot up a couple times when I forgot to plug the 6 pins back into them...if it happens with the next card maybe try using a different PSU connector?

id be pissed if i got a clearly used card that xfx didnt even bother to clean.

If the card works I wouldn't worry about it too much. I only look at the card when I install it, after that never see it again.

If the damage on it looks pretty bad I would at least let XFX know the condition that the card came in. So if you have to send it back again there would be no questioning about abuse to the card.

good news it works! so glad to having a premium" graphics card again. I was disappointed with all the dust and scratches but it is going to be in the case anyway. I used all 4 of my 6 pin connectors on my PSU with no luck as well as 2 other machines so i was definitely the card.

I usually care about the condition of the card and was pretty upset with the dings and scratches since the card i sent in was immaculate but at this point i was out a computer for a week and wouldn't want to be out another.

i rate xfx rma a 7
