5870 Price Drops?

I saw on another forum that there may be a 5870 price drop coming in the next couple of months - is this rumor or has it been substantiated?

Figuring whether or not to return my yet-to-be-shipped 5850 in that case...

I've heard a lot of talk since Nvidia dropped its 460 the other day.

personally, I would like to see the 5770 drop to $120, the 5830 drop to $170, the 5850 drop to $215, and the 5870 drop to $300.

i would think so, nvidea has something to compete price wise against ATI now(the 460).....and ATI can definatly survive a price drop, and with SI coming out soon, there is another reason to drop prices on the 5*** series cards

By then the product will have been out almost a year. The new cards are even already expected to be out by that time.

I like your price drop estimates . AMD needs to drop the prices substantially especially since the 6xxx series is also around the corrner.

If ATI put their video cards at around those prices, they would be unstoppable. Then, dropping them even further once the 6xxx series hits, nVidia would be hard pressed to compete.

It will likely drop when Southern Islands launches in the fall. So once it's been made obsolete I'm sure they will drop the price to clear any remaining stock. Although there may be nothing left. Use your 5850 for the time being and sell it right be SI hits.

Yea, and if they could just give them away for free, Nvidia would die. You guys want everything for nothing though. ATI's high end single card is still almost $100 less than Nvidia. They need to turn a profit to invest in new technologies. A top o the line GPU at $250 would be great every 6 months... but it ain't happening folks.

The 4870 could be had for around $300 when it was new. The 5770, with slightly better performance than a 4870 and much less heat, goes for around $150-$170. Just sayin'.

The GTX460 was a breath of fresh air for a thread locked market. ATi should respond by nixing the prices of the 5770/5830 and I'd hope price drops on the 5850/5870 would follow. This would put us in line with HD4850/4870 pricing. If I could pick-up a second 5870 for $300 I most certainly would and honestly I've been waiting for it. That should provide me with enough horsepower to kick it through until Northern Islands or Souther Islands if it's a worthy move.

I'm a big fan of the GTX460 and I may pick one up for my ITX build. Kudo's to nVidia for giving the market a kick in the ass. Hopefully prices fall for all of us.

I've been waiting patiently for the 5850 to come back down to MSRP or below. I need a replacement for my 4850, and the 5830 was too disappointing for me to bite (should have been a bit faster).

So, now I'm in a tough position: the GTX 460 1GB firmly beats the 5830, and comes within 15% of the 5850, all at an attractive price. I'm thinking about biting on the 1GB card, if ATI doesn't drop prices on the 5850 in the next week or so.

I can't be the only 4850 owner who's been waiting for a ~$200 upgrade.

I've had my share of reference 5870s and 5850s. I'm currently running a 5850, but have been itching to try a pair of 5770s.

My main concern is resale value. I've been through six different 58x0's in the last 4 months playing the trading game, and the recent release of the GTX 460 has got me worried that I'm going to lose out on some 5850 value. Is anybody else thinking of grabbing a GTX 460 to replace their 58x0 for the sake of resale value?

Why should the 5770 drop in price? They can be had for as low as $145.00, $55.00 less than the cheapest GTX 460. The 5770 owns it's current price segment until Nvidia comes out with a $150.00 card.

The 5830/5850/5870 should all come down in price though given their relative performance to the 460/470 cards.

I have pretty deep pockets so, I'm sure this is very subject issue, but why wait several months to save $20 or $30? Just buy the damn card you want and skip going out to eat one night or making that third beer run for the week or whatever your evils are.

But seriously, I have a set of 4870x2's that I happened across since I ordered my 5850s, so I have something to use in my primary rig. My secondary is what I wanted the new card for, so if it means waiting for a few months for that I'd gladly do that. I just wanted to know if anyone had heard anything more substantial than rumors.

5870:$370 (With the 460 creeping up to almost 5850 numbers with a good OC it makes sense to bring this down a tad.)

That's my guess, I usually deal in CDN $$ so I might be off a bit which is why I put in my reasoning.

5830 won't hit $170, it doesn't need to $199 is where it will settle for now, and the 5770 is still without competition.
5850 wont drop to $240 either, cuz it doesn't need to $279 will probably be the lowest it will go without something to replace it
and 5870, even if the 460 can creep up to 5850 numbers with a good oc, the 5850 also overclocks(very well too) and then it's the same gap.

Currently, the 5850 is cheaper then the GTX470 and performs on par, 5870 is $100 cheaper then the GTX480 and performs better in some games, worse in others.

Why does ATI need to do anything? the GTX480 should be $450, the GTX470 should be $300 and the GTX460 should be $199 (where it is at now) and a dual Fermi card needs to be $599

Looking at it as a move to simply increase their market share a price drop would be the best thing for them. NV can't drop their prices without losing money so they could not respond directly this generation. Howeverm ATi may not be in a corporate position to drop prices since they are also tied to the AMD CPU.

Because there is a lot of money to be saved in the used market. It's more like saving $50 and for a college student, that's like half a week of food.

I don't see 5870 prices coming down. At least not because of the 460. It is not in the same price/performance segment. Price wise, it is faster than everything less expensive and less expensive than anything faster. So it is correctly priced. The whole market needs to shift b4 it will drop significantly, (over $30), in price imho.

One caveat to this, 460 SLI which is very similar in price and a pretty healthy jump in performance. But multi-GPU is kind of rare still so I would agree.

At least HD5830 has a price drop so I think the 5850 and 5870 will follow soon, which a lot of people prefer over the 5830 anyway.
