So I ran some memtest86 and heard my 5870 heating up. Exhaust temp felt like 70-80 degrees. This card don't run any power saving before windows loads and the driver takes control of it. Anyone else have this? Just let it sit in the bios for a couple minutes and hear the fan speed increase.

That's weird that it would heat up at idle.
What's your ambient temps at?

Maybe it's running a lower fan speed set by the card's BIOS while not in Windows?

proabaly like the CPU where it runs full clock speed since there is no software running to halt it or lower the the clocks

Mine does the same.. my fans slow down when they boot into windows and then they slow down even more when MSI afterburner launches. Perfectly normal.

His post seems to imply his card is spinning up higher the longer he sits in BIOS.
Not the normal high speed at bootup people talk about.

yes. but the fan speeds adjusts itself accordingly. so at worst it may idle in the bios with about 30-40% fan speed and still feel hot. a scenario that is normal when i game with actual load on the gpu

The reason it's doing this is because the card isn't activating the idle temps that make it so cool during well...idle. Instead of 157/300 you're running the full 850/1200 because there's no software telling it to calm down. Since it's running at full tilt it's going to be relatively warm, though it shouldn't be under any load so I doubt it'll actually get too hot (above 75).

I know... that is normal. I was in my bios when I got my cards and I noticed the same thing.
