From a review of 5870:

"The card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit at minimum if you use it in a high-end system. That power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 40 Amps available on the +12 volts rails."

This is my PSU:

+3.3V : 24 A
+5V : 25 A
+12V(1) : 20 A
+12V(2) : 20 A
+12V(3) : 20 A
+12V(4) : 20 A
-12V : 0.5 A
+5Vsb : 3 A

The 5870 have two 6pin connectors right, does this mean I connect one connector to say the 12v1 and another to 12v2 then? To get 40 amps or

or do I need a new PSU

So far, the info you've provided doesn't tell us anything.

Please tell us what's the make and model of your PSU.

Hmm, that link doesn't provide any more info actually.

Ok, can you provide us a picture of the PSU label? The PSU label tells us who actually made the PSU and what's the total amperage on the +12V rail.

Just a FYI:
You determine the amperage on the +12V rails by first finding out what's the total combined, max load, combined or max wattage set aside for the +12V rails/section alone. Then divide that total by 12 and you get how much amps the PSU has on the +12V rail.

That's the correct way to find out how much amps a power supply has. Don't add up the amps on the +12V rail to figure out the amperage. Doesn't work that way. If the total combined or max wattage can't be found on the power supply, check the manufacturer's site page for that PSU for that info. If the manufacturer doesn't provide that information, it's generally a good sign for you to drop that power supply from consideration.

Thought I'd ask here.

I imagine the Corsair HX520 can handle the Radeon 5850.

Rest of the parts are pretty run of the mill:

2 WD HDDs (1TB WD Caviar Black, and an older 650GB WD), G SKILL Ripjaws 4GB DDR3 1600 (1.5v), Core i7 860 2.8GHz, Auzentech Forte, Gigabyte P55 UD4P, some DVD optical drive, 5 fans.

The Corsair will be enough.

Actually, ther is quite a bit of info on that site.. no hard to decifer for what is important...

I wish the USA online stores would list that much info about power supplies.. It even lists the location of the plugs on each power wire.

It is a 600w power supply with active PFC... It is probably a pretty decent power supply as junky ones usually don't have PFC of any kind.

It should be fine for the 5870. The 6-pin plugs should be on different rails so you should have plenty of amperage for the 5870.

* 1 stk. drevkabel, SATA+SATA+SATA, 0-30-40-50 cm
* 1 stk. drevkabel, SATA+SATA+SATA, 0-45-55-65 cm
* 1 stk. drevkabel, B4pin+B4pin+S4pin, 0-45-55-65 cm
* 1 stk. drevkabel, B4pin+B4pin+B4pin, 0-30-40-50 cm
* 1 stk. drevkabel, B4pin+B4pin+B4pin, 0-45-55-65 cm
* 2 stk. PCI-e kabel, 6/8-pin, 0-45 cm
B4pin = store 4-pins kontakter.
Hardware produsentene introduserer stadig nye flere kontakter.

Correction: More USEFUL info on that site. Specifically, no mention of who actually made the PSU or the total amperage on the +12V rail. Both very important info needed in this case.

While yes having APFC does make it a bit better than PSUs without APFC, having APFC alone does not make it a good PSU as many PSUs with APFC can be crap.

The last three specificaltions list (Lastregulering, Linjeregulering, and the ripple reading) are more than likely fake like every other PSU specs sheet says.

It looks like the people in Norway like the MIST brand:

And if it tests anything like the 1000w version in this review... which supposedly has a newer revision with better caps, it is a pretty good power supply.

And yes, a pic of the PSU sticker would help, but I am fairly certain from what I have been able to find out that it is a pretty good power supply.

To be fair, OCZ PSUs are well liked even though any enthusiast worth his salt would know how truly bad a majority of OCZ PSUs are once properly tested.

Not too shabby. However one problem with that review: no mention of what temperatures they test their PSUs at. There are many PSUs out there that will pass with flying colors at room temperature but fail once put into a real world temperature test (typically 45C to 50C).

However the internal pictures remind of a similar PSU. Just can't put my finger on it. Hmmmm...

Yeah, Mist PSUs got a good rep here in Norway, hopefully not just because it's Norwegian-made. The PSUs are made by a company that also sells parts, www.microplex.no

I think their early PSUs, way back now, were based off Fortron or CWT or something, but now they have their own components manufactured, don't know if they're really based on those anymore at all now really.

They use Japanese capacitors now.

They do good in tests...

I'm still wondering about that ampere thing though, but as I understand there's 20 available on each of the 12v rails so as long as I use two for the 5870 it should be fine.

I haven't been able to locate info on the total ampere for the PSU yet...

These guys do better tests than that linked to earlier in the thread, at very the top, not the post over this, that's the same people

http://www.hardware.no/artikler/mist_650_w/52129

I think this PSU is the closest to my 600w, same number of 12v rails and ampere on them.

Dude, just post a picture of the side of your 600W's PSU label. The number of 12V rails and amperage on them do not make the PSU you linked to close to the 600W you have.

Nice, I appreciate the help, thanks. I'm placing my order then.

How do you get the 44 number though?

I'm expecting the card to be bottlenecked on my q6600@3ghz but still expecting a nice performance jump from the 3870 I'm using now

See the box with the number 530W? See it how the borders begins and ends with the multiple +12V rails boxes above it? That 530W number tells us how much amperage total there is on the +12V rail. So 530W divided by 12 equals 44A.

So the PSU has a total of 44A on the +12V rail.
