I just had a 4850 die, had an aftermarket cooler on it, so no warranty (glued-on heatsinks on RAM, etc).
This after two HIS cards (not modified) died previously. Never have had good luck with video cards.

Anyhow, I am a non-gamer with a 30" HP monitor, and need an appropriate video card.
I will be running everything at the native 2560x1600 this monitor supports.
I am sure that most would work ok, but would I need 1GB of video RAM, or would 512MB
be enough for little to no gaming?

I was considering the 5770, since I would like something cool and fairly quiet,
but feel free to recommend another card, even if it is not ATI GPU.
I brought home a close-out 4850 from Best Buy yesterday, and the fan sounded like a freight train!
(I would like something not very audible).

Out of curiosity, what PSU are you using? The last time I saw a person with that many dead video cards, it was due to a shitty PSU.

Anyway since you're not gaming at all, even the cheap $40 HD 4350 will be enough. There are fanless models of that card too. If doing some minor gaming, pick up the HD 5670.
 
If you want a quieter 5770 get the one with the egg shaped cooler, not the huge shroud.

My power supply, by the way, is a Corsair HX620W, my former power supplies were Corsair HX520W and some Seasonic (something) 12 (I forget) that had a great rating.

I like having a bit more GPU than I need, just in case I decide to play something, or use something 3D in the future.

The Rev 2 cooler seems definitely like the way to go.
That HIS looks like what I want.
I am leery of HIS, although theirs could be a great card, I have had terrible support from them
in the past. I said I would not buy another HIS, but we shall see.
It would be nice to buy a video card knowing that the company is likely to be there, and be
responsive for RMA needs for a few years. These companies want you to treat video cards as
disposable items when they die, which is not surprising.
I have even seen Diamond resurfacing as a video card company, which is scary, since they were
out of business for like 10 years, perhaps they are a different company now?
Visiontek has "lifetime" and XFX "double lifetime" but, as I said, the XFX card I just tried was the
loudest I have ever used.

but perhaps this best illustrates things...so i'd say it's a wash...

Wow that last link comparing Vapor X and Rev2 5770 is mighty interesting especially after seeing ASUS' Formula 5750 being worse than stock cooling as well.
 
Are any of the nVidia cards more quiet and cool than ATI cards,
other than totally passive cooling which I do not want???

I just tried an XFX 5750, and even it has an audible fan, and it is the
supposedly quieter oval-shaped fan. The WEI is 0.1 slower on both
graphics scores than the 4850 I had that just died, so the 5750 would seem to be
just about the equal of the 4850. The dead 4850 was modded it with
Accelero cooling and epoxied-on RAM heatsinks, so no warranty. It lasted
just over a year, and worked perfectly until it kicked.

I would be interested in anything as fast or faster than the 4850, but would like
fans as quiet as the Accelero cooler was, which was almost silent.

I don't care if it is ATI or nVidia, as long as it is not a step down.

Is every darn GPU stock fan audible unless it is modded?

Do you know that it is supposed to be quiet?
It is not the egg-shaped cooler which is "quieter" than the others.
 
Sadly I don't know anything about it. Supposedly the 5770's in general run pretty cool at idle or when just browsing. I figure if you're gaming you have some sound going too so hopefully it shouldn't be too bad. If by some chance i do hear it I'll just throw an aftermarket hsf on it. I seriously doubt it will bother me though.

I read every 5770 review I could find on the net before I bought it. It should be here tomorrow or Friday. If you haven't ordered yet I'll let you know how it sounds.

I got my HIS 5770 today. The fan noise is virtually silent compared to the 3850 it replaced. There is some fan noise when I ran some benchmarks but it wasn't bad IMO. My PC sits right behind my monitor and is pretty close to me so if you have it under a desk or something I bet you wouldn't hear it at all.
 
I'm looking at a 5770 to replace my 4830 but I'm kinda sad that it seems newegg only lists the Powercolor card as coming with Dirt 2. Anyone know if any other cards newegg lists come with it?
 
I got an XFX 5770 from Fry's that has the egg-shaped cooler. It is much quieter than my 8800GT was, and kept quiet when I played Mass Effect 2. The computer sits next to my monitor
 
I got the card today and I can't hear the fan at all over the case fans and psu fan I have running. I even put it to 100% and sitting in my chair I honestly couldn't hear it at all.

Initial observations are that it installed and is running perfectly in win7 64 despite what all of these posts I read have said, and it is fast. Win7 experience is a 7.4/7.4 in graphics now vs a 4.9 for the onboard I had. My only complaint so far is that it doesn't seem to want to run fah on it. I'll keep trying on that though.
