I was wondering what you guys would buy. I am looking at either a 570 or 580. I'm on the fence because I know the 600 series is dropping soon so I don't know about dropping 500+ on a 580. What you guys think? I need a card right now so my question is would you buy a 580 now or just get a 570?

570 or 580

Buy an EVGA 570 or 580 then use their step-up program. I would bet that Kepler will be out in the three months that you have your new card. It all depends on your resolution. If you're rocking 1920x1080, go with the 570. If money isn't an issue go with the 580 but to be honest, if I was in your situation, I would either wait for kepler or get a 2GB VRAM card. The 570/580 VRAM is the limiting factor if you want to turn up AA and 1.2GB is pretty small (570) and 1.5GB (580) for the up and coming cards. But you can always use EVGA's step-up program so that's not all that bad either.
Personally, I wouldn't bet that much money on Kepler being out in the next 3 months. I'd say pick the card you want to use for the next year, and buy that now. But as Maverick pointed out, it's hard to make recommendations without knowing your resolution and intended usage - and budget. Why not split the difference with a 6970? All the performance of a 570, and more VRAM to boot.

I completely agree with this. I only wound up getting the GTX570 because I bought it while I was balls deep into Just Cause 2 and really got a wild hair up my rear when I noticed that water would look better using GPU compute on an NV card
Don't regret the purchase but, an HD6970 is good eating.cannondale06

OP, you need to list ALL of your other pc specs including resolution when asking for gpu advice.

Get a 570 or a 6970. The minor performance bump for the 580 at that resolution isn't worth the price premium.
This. I'd probably get the 6970. 2gb VRAM is a good thing. I have a 570 that I got for a steal, but if I were paying full price, I'd get a 6970 for sure.

Id go for the GTX580 is money wasnt an issue. It is faster than a GTX570 but not fast enough to justify its $150 price premium. That being said, if you can spare the extra $150, its the faster card at the end of the day. If I had $475-500 to spare, Id buy one in a second. So for value, the GTX570. For sheer horsepower, the GTX580. Depends on how much youre willing to spend.

The price difference between the GTX570 and 580 isn't all that much larger than the price difference between the GTX560ti and 570 and the difference in performance is similar. GTX570 is pretty overpriced too.
A quick check at Newegg shows 570s about $100 more than 560 Tis, but the 580s are $160 more than the 570s. At 1920x1200, I think the difference between the 560 and the 570 is higher than the difference between the 570 and the 580 - based on playable settings. You are already running with very high settings by the time you get to the 570, so there just isn't as much room for improvement by going to the 580 (although it does depend on the game, to some extent). Now, if you don't mind buying used and can find a deal for a 580 around $400, that's a different story.
And that's why I'd look seriously at a 6970.

You can find a GTX580 a good bit cheaper outside of Newegg that isn't really the case with the GTX570 right now. Also the difference is very similar percentage wise. I really just think that the GTX570 is almost as overpriced as a GTX580.
Even that is overpriced compared to a 6950. I would take a GTX570 over a 6970, personally.

A few months ago I would have agreed with you but now with the present games AND the upcoming games, the lack of VRAM on the GTX 570 severely hinders its future-proofing capabilities. With the next generation of cards, it would be ludicrous to get anything under 2GB VRAM if you want to play top-of-the-line games with AA on.

On 1920x1080 or even 1200? I don't agree with you. Which games are limited by the vram on a GTX570? Most people here would have long upgraded before the vram on a GTX570 becomes a real limitation especially with a single card.
I also think that " futureproofing" never works out.

ty. I say go ahead and get the gtx580 if money is not a problem. if money is an issue then nothing wrong with getting the gtx570 either. you can always just upgrade in a few months to a 6 series card if you feel you need more gpu power.

zero point in getting a 3gb gtx580 for a single card. those are really only needed for running in sli at higher resolutions. a single gtx580 will not run games at settings that need more than 1.5 gb of vram.
