550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for [email protected]

I'm having a problem getting my home exchange server to accept e-mails. i can send internally and externally, i can receive messages from my internal domain, but i can't receive messages from external domains. i've checked my recipient policy, verified that my mx record is pointing to my mail server, and verified that my hostname is resolvable (used nslookup and www.dnsstuff.com). i've been racking my brain for the past couple nights and cant figure it out, so im asking for help. i was hoping to figure it out on my own, but i guess it just wasnt meant to be.

if anyone can provide me with some suggestions id appreciate it.

Have you set up a SMTP connector for the internet?

why would i need to do that. according to microsoft the default install of exchange can handle sending and receiving of e-mails. id need the connector if i had an exchange 5.5 server in the mix something like that.

none of the resources from these 2 sites say i should need one. i'll try to cofigure one according to these steps, but i dont think i should have to.

You should always set up a SMTP connector to connect to the outside world. No, it's not "required", but it is a best practice because it gives you more control of how messages enter and leave your organization.

i figured out the problem. external mtu's were using the smtp service on a iis machine, not the exchange server. i opened the port for the wrong ip address.
